I may have a problem. :(

And I thought I carried heavy... (Significant other is on probation so I carry an extra locking folder for her)

Don't worry Ted; modern pants technology has many more pockets than older pants. Some now even come with specific knife pockets included!

Yes I do. No joke.

Agreed. If you're actually serious that you carry that many... i mean.... look, it's your right and your prerogative and I'd not chime in or judge except that you specifically asked us to do so. So since you asked us to weigh in, here's my contribution.

I feel naked if i don't have a knife on me, and it's not uncommon (though definitely not overly common. Maybe 3-4 times per month) for me to have a folder and a fixed blade.

But we go on and on about how knives are tools. Tools to be respected, used, etc... it's a utility item, so the question becomes, where is the utility in carrying that many?

More to the point, have you EVER been in, or even conceived of a (not totally far fetched) situation where you could need that many knives on a daily basis?

...Seems a bit much, but I know the more
knives we own, the more we want to
carry and use almost all of them.
I like carrying a straight edge folder, along
w/ a serrated one. I also like to have a multi-
tool, and have been adding a smaller fixed
blade, as well.
It's also nice to have a smaller, perhaps a traditional folder on you when you want to be discreet, and its also nice to have a lower
end user, in the event of a 'non-knife' person
wants to borrow / use your knife or if you need a blade for a certain task, but don't want to risk damage to your better pieces.
B.T.B.

That much in my pockets, plus all the other stuff you need, would bother the crap out of me!! At most, I will have one folder in my pant pocket, one clipped to my sweatshirt or jacket pocket, then fixed blade(s) if I am on the farm or going out into the woods. Oh, and a neck knife on occasion. I just like to carry light I guess, everyone is different. If you are worried about not having a sharp knife to cut something with, carry a pocket stone for touch up's. If you are carrying them to take out and mess around with at work or wherever, I don't have an answer.
Just curious, if you know why, why do you carry so many? Nothing wrong with it at all, just curious.

dont think ive had more than 3 knafs at one time in my pockets. mostly just carry one and sometimes two.

Rather, I would have only carried the micarta inlay Sebbie and the fixed blade.

I tried just the 2, a fb and a lock blade, I found myself still short, I'd stick a hand in a pocket and come up empty so I put a b;ade in each pocket. That works till I'm lookin' for a specific style blade and it's in another pocket I have to go searchin' so the solution is 1 lock blade and one traditional folder per pocket. :)

Lol!, i gotta say i do think carrying that many is a bit odd or ocd perhaps. I can totally c 2 folders or one fixed one folder, but what could u possibly need that many for? Lol

I don't disagree with you and I am genuinely OCD about knives, it has fulfilled many needs in my 50 some years on this planet. First and for most it's a tool and by it's very nature requires more than 1. We all know that there's no such thing as 1 tool for every job so by that description different jobs require different blades. I could easily justify the cuttin' edge differences for my reason for so many blades, (Well, maybe not ;) )

The problem is you need to carry more knives. What if they all break? Also, better bring along a sharpener just in case.

I do, I carry a small foldin' diamond hone and when ever I run into a friend I get, "Ted, could you take some of my knives home and sharpen it?" or the other favorite,

There's a knock on the door or I'm in the garage and someone stops in, "Ted I was in the neighborhood and just stopped into say hello. Got any new knives lately?"

I'll pull out what ever is in my nearest pocket ;) and after they play with it a bit they'll hand it back and say, "I wish my knife was that sharp." I'm a sucker and always offer to put an edge on it for them if they have it with them. This is where I know if I'll be in trouble. They'll usually say, "Yea, I got 'em in the truck, I'll go get 'em."

Did you catch that? Just a little word, barely 2 letters and an apostrophe, 'em. Plural, contraction of them, meaninin' more than one. They ultimately come back to the garage with a box of things that have handles an a single edge that may have tapered down to a sharpened edge at some point in time. Most times they're chipped, dinged, scalloped and bent but I still do my best to return a serviceable blade/tool to them.

Believe me you're not the only one. It's better than bein addicted to alcohol or drugs and if I'm gonna be obsessed about something, knives fulfill that obsession on many levels. What would be even better is if I could make money, make a livin' with knives, than I might get bored or burnt out on knives..... nah, never happen.

Haha. I didn't realize there were pants with 10 pockets

See that would be an even greater problem, more knives would be needed. :)

Why carry one wristwatch, when you can carry four + couple pocket watches

See I have a watch with multiple time zones so that takes care of that, I have been known to carry a stopwatch and a wristwatch when I was workin' and had the need to time certain things but I wouldn't think it was odd. Consider this, if all you had were broken watches and we know even a broken analog watch is right twice a day so how many watches would you need to carry to be accurate within 15 minutes a day? ;) :) :D Would that be odd? :)

I appreciate an honest answer, thanks and thanks for all the replies from everyone, I asked. :) but back on track and to answer the last quote above this reply...

No, I've never found myself in a situation where I've felt I could use/need that many in a day but I have worked in a crew where I've lent most of my knives out, this actually precipitated the need to carry cheaper folders for people to borrow as I wouldn't lend a Sebenza to too many people but the ZT 0808 I'd be a little more likely to let someone use it for a supervised minute or two. I've found myself where I've been down to just 3 outta the 8 or more knives I started out with. Also keep in mind I'm more likely to carry more smaller folders.... Who am I kiddin? I'm carryin' 3-4 medium to large sized lock blades 3-5 medium to small lock back spring and slip joints on average most days anyway.

I can coon finger and oogle most well made knives all day, I can talk about knives, the differences in steels and functionality of patterns all day long. Don't even get me started on cutlery history, bottom line is I do love knives and everything about them, even more so than a lot of the enthusiasts in our community here. I figure as long as I'm not hurtin' anyone and as long as I'm an asset to the knife community in some way There's nothin' wrong with the amount of blades I carry. Hell I even used to be the topic of water cooler conversations, coffee break discussions and even once was used as an example of a harmless knife knut and helped to change the office policy of a non knife friendly workplace.

I do feel it's a little obsessive and my only 2 concerns are falling through the ice with pockets full of knives and forgettin' to flush out the salt water or sand then havin' by blades rust or even bein' weighed down and plummeting to the bottom of a lake with 20 knives in my pockets and drowning because I couldn't get them all out in time or one last bizarre one, gettin' into an accident and havin' all my knives stolen. My wife has strict orders to ask to see all the knives they got off me and if they hand her less than a half a dozen knives ask to see their supervisors, someone's got my Sebenzas ot ZTs . :D

Just an update, when I went to PT today this is what I took,

LFP, ZT0770CF, a small double lugged plain Jane Sebenza 21(in a leather slip sheath in the bottom of my pocket)

RFP ZT 0808 Rexford, 2015 Canal Street Cutlery BFC Serpentine Jack and a Lone Wolf/Loveless City knife (in a leather slip sheath in the bottom of my pocket)

RRP a recent gift from a member and friend here, JK Knives E01 Semi Wharncliffe Fixed Blade,

LFP (in my wallet) small stainless handled Case Penknife.

On my neck chain a Victorinox Money clip knife and a SAK Minichamp on my keyring.

Knives relieve stress, are tools, teaching aids and many other things and also have the ability to make other objects into tools, I personally don't mind carryin' more than 1 blade and have no problem with anyone else who carry's more than a few knives, I even admire people who can get away with carryin' only 1 knife. Hell 40 years ago I carried a Schrade 51OT, a Schrade Trapper and a Leatherman 200 Supertool and that was it. Sometimes I miss those days. ;)

Good for you on the pistol carry, I've been trying to get mine and it's not so easy in some counties of New York. The more good citizens who own legal pistols the better. Also if carrying that many knives brings you joy, then do so!

To be stone cold honest, yes, carrying that many blades on you for everyday errands/work is excessive. Though there is nothing wrong with it, unless the police get involved, then they might handle it differently. It would be like that scene from Dark Knight when the Joker gets arrested and they empty his pocket of a bunch of random knives.

Where exactly do you put all of those babies?

Are you asking for help with your problem or just wondering how many people think it's a problem?

It's not a problem for ME, I don't care how many knives anyone owns or does or doesn't carry. But yes, I think you do have some sort of problem.

I used to have a problem but I seem to be over it now. I had a period of time when there were circumstances in my life that combined to make me susceptible to getting into knife collecting, and I ended up buying a lot more pocket knives than I have any need for. Those circumstances have changed and the obsession / compulsion is gone.

If it is causing you a problem in your life, you should seek out competent psychological or medical help. There are medications and therapies that can help.

If it NOT causing you a problem in your life, then you are just adorably eccentric.

You do realize that asking this question on this forum is like going into a bar on a weeknight getting near closing time and asking all of the other drunks if they think you might be an alcoholic, right?

I see what you mean. The gray in the sheath lanyard does not even come close to matching or otherwise complimenting the gray in the bandana. I would consider switching to a blue bandana, depending on the rest of my ensemble.

Yes. You are just as crazy as most of the rest of us.

Nice load-out.

I was stopped goin' into the statue of liberty pre 9/11 with my wife and our 5 year old daughter, they go through the metal detector no problem, I look over at the sighn, no switchblades, do dirks or daggers or gravity knives, no mention of how many, only what was illegal . I step through and the thing goes off. Off to the side, empty my pockets and get wanded. My wife shoots me a dirty look and grabs my daughter tellin ' her, "...might as well get a seat, looks like we'll be here for a while if they let us in at all." She was mad.

Meanwhile the Park Police were mad they couldn't confiscate any of the knice knives I had, after spending a half an hour measurin', flippin', flickin' and every other kinda thing short of takin' them apart, they finally gave in but they were mad. After havin' every cop on Liberty Island try to prove it was somehow illegal and not, they let me pass. . The only comment the guy at the security check point could say was towards my daughter "the next time your daddy brings you to visit maybe he'll leave the arsenal at home or in the car and you'll get in much quicker." My wife was so PO'd that if I even said something to the Park Police and prolonged our family day from progressin' any further I woulda been walkin' home or at least to the closest bar to wait for a ride. ;)

Now when we go out together I'll pare it down to 3 knives, Locker, Fixed Blade and SlipJoint/Traditional or 2 if it's formal like a wedding or funeral, then it'll be a nice lock blade like a William Henry B10 Lancet or a custom Ray Cover slip joint and a Pearl Pen or Peanut.

As for where the knives fit?, I typically wear jeans so I have a few in the bottom of my pockets with keys and change, left and right pockets clipped, fixed blade back pocket or on belt one on the keys and one on a neck chain. About 2 weeks ago I went to take a shower and hack come down for a cup of coffee before takin' a shower. The Mrs asked me to open a safety film on a pill bottle and I didn't have a knife on me, other than surgery or an MRI, I can't remember the last time in 30 years I didn't have a knife on me.

I even did my tour of jury duty and I was the only person on the jury who had a bunch of knives on him. (I worked as a mechanic for the county so I had all the keys and clearance to get into the courthouse without goin' through the metal detectors or gettin' wanded by the sheriffs. :) I sat in the jury box smilin', hand in my jacket pocket fingerin' my blade. Never did ask the DA if what I did was ok. After all I did work in the courthouse and carried a knife as part of my daily edc anyway and on any given day in and about the courtrooms and holding cells, in fact I routinely carried several knives.

One of the other reason for my excessive carry is pure laziness, I wanna be able to put my hand in any pocket and pull out the knife I want. :)

Just sparkin' conversation, I'm not lookin' for help, if that was the case, I'd just unload all my knives here and make lots of people happy or seek professional help, also I'll take any opportunity to gratuitously show pics of my longest obsession.

Adorably eccentric, I like that, I'll have to tell that to my wife. :) You're right, may have been more of a rhetorical question with me lookin' for some validation for my obsessive behavior. Could be worse though, I could be obsessed with many other things much unhealthier than pocket knives. ;)
