I must not be a true Knife Knut because I am a bit confused...

Why, In a place so completely filled with pictures of unused pocket jewelry that the servers are full, are so many people concerned about factory edges being razor sharp or whats the best way to get a knife " screaming hair popping" sharp. I mean seriously, most of you are only going to use the knife to post pics and cut yourself with.

What gives? Whats the fascination? Why do people that have never used a knife, buy the latest wizbang sharpening equip? Is it just for the gram! I mean these people will spend a K on a sharpener then complain about the price of the knives they will never use anyway.

Someone explain this to me.

Yes I am being a bit tongue in cheek ;)....
( for you yutes that means im kidding)
👏👏👏

The sad thing about people's obsession with posting their mirrored edges on Instagram is that many of them don't even do the sharpening. They can't. They have to outsource it just like their grocery purchasing, car driving, and dog walking these days. And of course they conveniently leave out the mention that it is someone else's work. They just desperately need the likes on their pics. So much of it is phony, the knife realm is just one example of a thousand.

Didn't take me too long to realise the signal to noise ratio here is wacked... None the less I joined and will participate in the treads that interest me. If you catch me posting a picture of a knife with a cat, a coffee, a beer, some bourbon, a tree, a flower, a car, a watch, some food, a dog, another knife, some rocks, a trail, ect... I will have truely become a knife knut.
But if we removed the blades from those threads, we'd have to change the name of the site to... Forums, and that wouldn't be as interesting.

I buy every knife with the intention of using it…and eventually sharpening it.

However….

I have too many knives, and when push comes to shove, and I’m in a hurry out the door, the tried and true knives are the ones I grab.

My safe is full of good intentions. 😂🤣
This is the crux of my situation as well. I have a handful (actually more like 4) knives that see a significant amount of carry and use. I worry that if I'm carrying something different, I'll miss doing feats of daring do with my regulars and they'll be upset...

There is no brick and mortar knife store around me. If I see something interesting I have to buy it to even hold it.
Some knives remain in inventory others get used. Usually the good users, will get me to order spares.

One result of this is a lot of knives that remain as new. But I don’t consider them safe queens.

Another result is I can go shopping in my own brick and mortar collection and pick from the very best. Usually I end up carrying the same old same old, but the others serve a purpose and keep me entertained.

I also on occasion will let a young person go shopping at my “store” which has been a fun way to mark milestones.

Then there is the museum portion of my collection. Also there to keep me entertained and to share with others.

I have a fascination with stand out craftsman, designs and materials. Whatever my obsession is at any given time, it ends up there.

Also, I want to leave my kids the coolest stuff possible, and really hope they leave it to their spawn. Immortality requires longevity. lol

No social media accounts for this old man. Never will be. So, you guys are my only grambookXtok. 🤣

I don't use any of the knives in my "collection," so it doesn't matter how "sharp" they are. 🤷‍♂️

As for the knives that I do use, I just sharpen them when they get dull or replace the safety razor/utility blade to make them better. LOL! ;)

What anyone else does with their knives is of no concern of mine.

I say to each their own. Why should I care what someone else does or doesn’t do with their knives. We all have the affliction in different variations. 😉
I agree. I don't care, and it's none of my business what other people do with their own knives.

Also, I have no room to judge, because I have knives that I don't use. However, even the ones that I carry and use at work don't look worn and beat up, because I don't abuse them, and I clean and maintain them daily.

ebidis ebidis I’m not a snob. Quality just meant something less destructive than a belt grinder.

Sounds like you have it figured out.

I like an old knife with some wear, as long as it still has some good snap and an edge I can sharpen, or try to, but still has a few years left of life to enjoy. I get an enjoyment thinking about how it could have served its owner well….and properly taken care of too.

It's just part of my daily routine. After dinner, I clean and (if needed) strop whichever knife I carried that day. Of course my child is grown and moved out, and I am no longer married, so I have time for that kind of stuff. 😁

Who said any of this needs to make sense 😁.

Everyone appreciates knives in their own way, and although I don't share everyone's form of appreciation, I don't judge them or think less of them if their methods are different than mine. After all, it's just knives we're talking about.

I agree with the sentiment "to each their own", but at the same time there's no reason we can't poke a little fun (including at ourselves). Like I said, it's just knives we're talking about. I'm sure that not everyone shares all of my forms of knife appreciation.

I think if you take a hard look at just about any "hobby" you'll find reasons to think that it doesn't make any sense. Or that some of the people involved in that hobby are downright crazy. What is a hobby after all, just something we do to amuse ourselves and pass the time when we don't have to be working for a living.

As far as people posting knife pics on social media, I think anything that keeps the interest in knives going among younger generations and helps to make knives more "normal" and socially acceptable is a good thing. I don't do social media, but I don't think less of those who use it to show off their pretty knives. More power to them I say. Keep spreading the word that knives are good.

I have hardly any need for knives these days, but I still like to post pictures of my knives on various knife forums, including knives I have never used, and will never use. Does that make me deserving of derision and ridicule?

My general advice to people in the knife community is- don't take it all so seriously. It's just knives. If the things other people do with THEIR knives actually upsets you or causes you to look down on them, then I'd say YOUR the one with the problem, not them. (this was not directed at you Kettleman, I understand "tongue in cheek" 😁)

And by the way Kettleman, you paid to be a member of a knife forum, and you have over 4600 posts in just 14 months. I hate to break it to you, but you're already infected. One of us. One of us. One of us. 😁
