I must not be a true Knife Knut because I am a bit confused...

Why, In a place so completely filled with pictures of unused pocket jewelry that the servers are full, are so many people concerned about factory edges being razor sharp or whats the best way to get a knife " screaming hair popping" sharp. I mean seriously, most of you are only going to use the knife to post pics and cut yourself with.

What gives? Whats the fascination? Why do people that have never used a knife, buy the latest wizbang sharpening equip? Is it just for the gram! I mean these people will spend a K on a sharpener then complain about the price of the knives they will never use anyway.

Someone explain this to me.

Yes I am being a bit tongue in cheek ;)....
( for you yutes that means im kidding)

A good factory edge means you get to use the knife right away. Reprofiling takes away material that I'd rather avoid taking away. And if I bought a knife with a baller high wear resistance steel and the edge is garbage I'd be annoyed. This is my opinion as someone who buys knives to use. Sure some of them are fancy, but if there's stuff to cut I will absolutely use them. Last summer I had to cut bike shifter cable with my Inkosi on one occasion and Hinderer on another, in retrospect I should add cable cutters and spare derailleur hangers to my kit. Anyway the situation still stings, thankfully I carry a Falkniven DC4 on me so the edges were an easy fix.

Some seemed to have missed the humor and the actual question.

Why worry about the edge on a knife that will never be used?

Nothing was said about quality or quantity. Nothing was said about not using your knives. No-one .said that you have to use them. No one actually cares if you do or not.

Well, you did say “I mean seriously, most of you are only going to use the knife to post pics and cut yourself with.”.

Regarding the hair popping edge, check this out:

“Fantasies act as a means of escape for people that help in enabling them to mentally disengage with reality or from their surroundings. Individuals also rely on fantasies to escape into a more exciting or desirable mental world so that they can deal with stress, boredom, or dissatisfaction….”

… or lack of picture posting ability.

It’s all good :)

Didn't take me too long to realise the signal to noise ratio here is wacked... None the less I joined and will participate in the treads that interest me. If you catch me posting a picture of a knife with a cat, a coffee, a beer, some bourbon, a tree, a flower, a car, a watch, some food, a dog, another knife, some rocks, a trail, ect... I will have truely become a knife knut.

Hold my Glencairn ;) ...

I think that about covers them all, except I don't have any with the pups, and the only one I can get with my daughter's cat is one showing why I haven't been able to get any of those cool hummingbird shots like Retired UPS Driver Retired UPS Driver 🤣

Sure a little sharpening and touch ups can be fun until you get a knife with an edge that seems to be deliberately made to be difficult to sharpen even on a Ken Onion Work Sharp with a blade grinder attachment. The fun goes away as it turns into pure work and then you realize this could have and should have been done before it left the factory which is loaded with equipment that would have done it in a fraction of the time. That is with cheap steel too. Imagine the fun it would be with hardened CPM steels. You then wake up and learn all knives should come sharp from the factory to begin with because if it does not cut it is not a knife but a knife like object and nothing beats a thin ice pick for poking holes in things.
