I regret allowing someone to hold my knife when...........

When they do something stupid with it... Non-knife people seem to have deeply embedded the idea that a knife is a cheap disposable item that you can do stupid stuff with without noteworthy consequences. So, here we go with some examples, all experienced in real life : slamming shut a slipjoint !!! Makes me mad. Stabbing a tree (with any knife), even worse !!! Keep on cutting into the plate like a dummy while the steak is already cut. Sigh... Taking a kitchen steel to the knife (MY KNIFE !) because "it's not that sharp..." (WHAT !) Cutting stubborn stuff (squash, hard bread, wood...) with my thinnest blade (possibly on stone, glass or ceramic...). Trying to cut with pushing down the blade like an ox instead of pulling it. Come on ! That's just a few from the top of my head. OK, I know I'm a knife nut but please can't people get a grip on how things work ? Makes me want to punch them in the face but I only object politely and take the knife back. Comment is usually along the line "Wow ! What a fuss you're making about knives". Now, you deserve another punch for being not only ignorant but eager to stay so.

The one time I loaned a co worker a good knife, she sliced her thumb open before i could say "don't run your thumb over the blade".

Good grief, what is it about non-knife people that makes them want to do this? I have a friend who is afraid of knives almost to the point of paranoia, and yet every time he asks to see whatever I'm carrying and I hand it to him, this is the first thing he does and I have to grab his hand and stop hiim to keep him from cutting himself. I don't see how he can be so afraid of getting cut by a knife and so careless with the edge all at the same time. I think most people just aren't used to properly sharp knives, which makes me want to keep a dull one on hand for regular folks to use.

If someone asks to use my knife, I ask why and if it's to cut something, I might even err on the side of caution and do it myself. It depends on the person. I'm usually conflicted because I like exposing people to good quality knives, but at the same time, there are some really clueless and careless people out there.

I wonder if nowadays considering the use of tools with disdain is somehow "hip" or gives you a sort of highground from where you can look down on the plebeians working with their hands. To be honest, I got that very same vibe from coworkers who thought totally smart to use a screwdriver as a chisel or a punch (just an example, there was way more definite stupidity like, for example, attempting to blow out a greasy bearing with oxygen !).

Please help me get this right (I've thought about asking many times). I tend to check sharpness (without cutting anything) by running my thumb ACROSS the edge (it should be "gripped" by the blade); I have never cut myself doing this. I frequently see, on this type of thread, that people cut themselves by running their thumb on/along the blade. Are they actually running their thumb down the length of the blade? I've never seen this and would be shocked to do so. Please clarify, thank you.

I can't believe you're serious here. I suggest to try both methods. Both are stupid but one gives no accurate clue about sharpness (accross is safe but not very conclusive) and the other will get you cut for good... Just try them out side by side ! Sorry, I got lost in the joking department here...

Actually, across is one of the oldest tests I am aware of. It has been a standard, when paper or such is unavailable such as rock sharpening while skinning, as long as, well, knives (I've used it for over 60 years-no wisecracks). ;) At least from everything I have read. :) PS, I hope you find your way back. :D

Yes, I do the cross-drawing of the thumb, randomly, during the sharpening process. It's just that, a random evaluation. But I do it ! So there you got a point. I worked hard to type some sense but now I'm going away within seconds into nonsense territory...

I'm too cooked for that game, and I'm such a polite guy... Always nice until I get angry, but that happens only very late at night, if ever... Have a nice evening !

And that's how I roll ! I even harass the people currently in the kitchen (sister, cousin, friends,...) about having touched or used my holy knives. You can use it... but do no silly stuff with it or I'll skin you ! Result : everybody uses the crappy stainless paring knives lying around. As far as I'm concerned, this is a win/win situation ! Handing out my EDC ? Only under (very, very) close control. I'm a nutter ? YES. Deal with it.

I swear to y’all, no lie, I now buy mora companions and give them to my tank crew. Every time I switch a crew member or get moved to a new tank, bam they all get moras lol. I got so tired to people asking to use my knife and then prying stuff, stabbing into hard damaging objects, cutting themselves (happened 2x), and other stupid crap that I just get them ones so they don’t ask me. Plus, it is a nice gift to my crew mates.

herisson: Mille grazie. Buona notte, dormi bene. :)

Buona notte ! Geez, once I was young and I could sleep anywhere. Now, I'm happy to sleep through a quiet night on my luxury mattress... I say it's funny, in some way... Whatever, I can still goof off on the innernet...

.....they snap it open. My inspiration to start this thread came yesterday. I was showing someone my Griptilian when another gentleman walked up. Well I allowed him to hold it as well then THWACK!!!!! He snapped it open and I mean hard. Then asked me did you know it could do that???? I gave him a low level MHMMM!!! Then another THWACK!!!!! By this time my stop pin was screaming for mercy. I don’t want to tell some to stop doing that, but I think it is common courtesy to ask permission before rough housing someone’s personal belongings.
Feel free to share your experiences in similar situations.

Can you really break a knife this way. I fidget alot on long car commutes and i slam it hard occasionally. Or in a situation i want a 100% sure full opening i slam it open too.

Don't get me wrong. If i break my own knife i'm only pissed at myself. They should treat the knife delicately out of respect even if they know the knife won't break.

Respect is the word (or understanding) and that's where it lacks, so it seems.

According to the responses I’ve read, the Griptilian is tough enough to take hard flicking. Apparently it doesn’t hurt the knife but I don’t open my knives this way so it bugs me when someone else does.

when they start asking:

how much did this cost?
why would you spend that much on a knife?
how many knives do you have?
how is this knife different from the one I bought at the gas station or on ebay for $8

LMAO!!! We have all had this line of questioning. For me just today! The only question she didn’t ask on that post was “ Well how big is it!??”

 I've been opening my knives incorrectly time and time again.

The motto I've seen around BF when threads like these arise goes along these lines:

Non-knife Guy: Can I hold your knife?

Us Knife Knuts: Can I hold your wife?

Just lay that one on the jagoff next time.:D;)

That’s is poetry sir! Haha man I will absolutely be using that one.

Yes, she ran her thumb along the edge, from front to back ( gives me a shiver like nails on a chalk board)
