I Say Goodbye...

Choosing a drink. The struggle is real...

What's a good Scotch to try for someone that is a bourbon fan?

So far, I have tried, and liked, the following:
Glendiddich 15 Solera Cask
Glenlivet 12 & 15
Balvenie 12 Double Wood
Cragganmore 12
Macallan
GlenDronach Allardice 18

I've tried some that tasted like licking a bandaid, and didn't care much for that.

Unless you're referring to heavily phenolic/smokey peat flavor with the bandaid comment, I'd steer you towards a milder Islay like Ardbeg 10 (tastes like Lagavulin 16 at about 2/3 the price).

Lagavulin has an 8 yr old now. Little easier on the wallet then the 16

I'll have to check it out, though I feel like even the 16 may be coming back down from its frothy highs of a few years ago. Lately it has been on sale in the $65 range here in Hawaii.

The one I tried, I think it was a Talisker, was very peaty/smokey. I have to ease my way in to those, so looking for something lightly peated/smoked, so I can become accustomed to it.

Talisker is not near as peaty as Lagavulin. Laphroig is the peatiest of them all. Especially the 10 year cask strength

I would load up on the 16 at that price. Wow! It's been solid at $90 here for the past couple years.

I think that a good choice to try might be Benromach 10 (has a maroon label). It adds a little bit of smoke and gets rid of some of the highland taste (that's the best I can describe it, honestly) that many of the scotches you list have. This should be a decent transition scotch. When I started branching out, I went between this scotch and Balblair 03 and then ultimately tried the Lagavulin 16.

Generally speaking, this Benromach is just a rock steady scotch without any prominent, distracting tastes. I describe the Balblair to people as the white wine of scotches, modestly sweet but has some spice. When you are ready to try the Islay scotches, I think the best one would be Lagavulin 16. This one is peaty, yes, but so well rounded and developed. It has layer, upon layer, upon layer...I couldn't help but smile when I had my first sip - Literally, my mouth curled up at the edges without a willful intent to do so by me. It was unreal.

Talisker to me has very much the same taste profile as the Lagavulin 16, except that I felt something was missing. Like one flavor that would've smoothed it all out wasn't there. A phenomenal scotch, but not quite as rounded as the Lagavulin. I don't know, like the Lagavulin is satin finish and the Talisker is doublecut or BIG. LOL.

Good luck!

Added: Another thing that really helped me out and really improved my enjoyment of scotch was learning to breathe through my nose and mouth together. The nose is much more sensitive than the tongue and adds greatly to the experience.

Speaking of the Balblair, I just picked this up yesterday on my way home.

Thanks, I'll be on the lookout for those.

Not sure if it was the Talisker that I didn't care for, or not. It was a sampler pack of sorts, with 3 different 200ml bottles, but I can't recall what they were.

Hey, Cobalt, are you still looking for Nadurra? There's a liquor store near me that has 3 bottles of it on the shelf.
