I'm just curious cause I got a warning from paypal threatening to shut down my account for non-compliance because I let a couple folks use the gift and payment owed option from personal tab.

Here's what paypal said

Dear ........,

Please do not reply to this email. This mailbox is not monitored and we
are not able to respond to inquiries sent to this e-mail address. If
you still need assistance please log in to your PayPal account.

We recently changed our pricing so that all PayPal customers can receive
money from friends and family within the US for free. PayPal merchants
receiving money as payment for a purchase continue to incur fees.

We're not sure if you are aware of this, but we noticed that some of
your customers are sending you personal payments for purchases.
Unfortunately, this violates our rules and we need your help correcting
this. Please don't ask or allow your customers to use personal payments
for their purchases.

If we continue to see such activity after 10 days from the date of this
email, we may have to disable your ability to receive personal payments
and then you will pay fees for all money received through PayPal.

You can find more information about payment types and fees in sections
4.2 and 8 of our User Agreement - just click "Legal Agreements" at the
bottom of any PayPal page.

If you have any questions, concerns, or think we may have made a
mistake, please contact us at www.paypal.com/contactus. Thank you for
helping us resolve this matter.

We know situations like this can be difficult, so thanks for working
with us. If you have more questions, visit our Help Center by clicking
"Help" in the top right corner of any PayPal page.

Sincerely,
........

I even saw a listing on there auction site last night that mentioned seller would give a free gift if you sent payment for the listing as a gift?????????????

I wasn't aware of that, thank for posting it!

Seems a little cheesy that they don't like it though.

My question is how do they know you don't have a whole lot of friends sending you money?

Do you think they would really be able to tell and shut you down?

I have a personal account, and I send and receive payment with no charges with no problems but if you have an account with a high volume of transactions, they want their percentage, so they are trying to take out. Paypal sucks!!!

The folks over there are fairly savy when it comes to who's doing what on their site.

Paypal policy officially states that the "gift" option is NOT to be used for any kinds of sales. Furthermore, you are technically NOT allowed to charge an extra fee to cover your expenses with Paypal. If your paypal and money order prices are different, and paypal finds out about it, they might lock your account.

I was recently reminded of this, and changed one of my sales threads accordingly. If you look in the feedback section of BF, you will see that there ARE people who will go out of their way to report you to paypal if you're charging an extra paypal fee, just because they are ticked off at you for doing so.

Paypal is a giant ripoff, but many folks won't go through the hassle of mailing a money order, so we're pretty much stuck with it. I still hate paypal with a passion, though.

just open a separate personal accounts for the personal tabs and I think you'll be ok.

They're a business like anyone else. Of course they want their cut.
I don't use that option often, but I have been loaned some INFI that I loan money back for.;)

I know this was true on their auction site and thats why the only form of payment acceptable for an auction is paypal, but didnt think they had any control outside of their site.

As far as I am concerned if someone needs to use paypal the service is on them...not me. WHy should I pay for someone thats to sorry or lazy to go to PO?

I agree, but the user policy of paypal says it's against their rules, so if they catch you they are probably gonna nail you.

Another reason paypal sucks.

Yeah, it's not like getting a MO is hard. I guess we are a generation of instant gratification.

I am getting pretty sick of PayPal.

M.O.s are a pain in the a$$. It is difficult to get to the P.O. in many areas and beyond insane during this season. I won't add 3% to my asking price for Paypal, but I'll price according to what I want in my account at the end of the purchase. I prefer Paypal and will do all I can to avoid M.O.s.

I guess different strokes for different folks.

Probably depends on the area you live in. I also adjust my price to include the fees it's just too bad because it drives up the price of already pricey knives.

After one trades hands a few times you could have $50+ of fees into it.

I just wanted to add that shipping through Paypal is cheaper than going to the P.O. too. I'm not sure why everybody seems to hate them. They are providing a service. Why should it be free? I mean does everybody b!tch about prices of M.O.s when they get them or the price of gas when you have to drive to the P.O. too? I like to save $ as much as the next guy, but what is Paypal actually doing that is so bad? Just askin'.

I just recently listed a few blades for sale, and several of the buyers requested to pay by the "personal / gift" tab to avoid the fees. Now I haven't sold anything for a while, so this was a new one on me. I let it happen, but will probably decline that offer an any remaimaining sales. I would hate for PP to come back at me for the fees.

PP is just like any other credit card company... they want their transaction fee. Visa and MasterCard charge the merchant 2.5% and AMEX charges 3.5%. As far as PP not allowing the seller/merchant to charge for the fees... I guess that makes sense. We don't see any other merchants charging us a fee for credit card use. But I guess that wouldn't stop any merchant from offering a discount to cash customers. ;) And a MO is as good as cash. :D

Thanks for the thread and heads up T...

It's a good service, instant money transfer. A big reason they are hated so much, is they are anti-gun. Paypal will lock your account, if they find you are selling Guns or Gun parts.
