I see a bunch of folks using personal tab option on paypal. IS it ok? cause FYI

Well that makes sense... it's a gift after all, what would you need protection against? :D

.

see the fee is for disputes and whatnot, to cover themself also. And if using the personal tab, no you don't get any protection. I will only use the peronal tab for transactions I am secure with, otherwise, I will ask for more information. Paypal sucks so bad that they always screw me if a transaction goes bad that I have to use only the credit card when using normal buying, so if the sellers screws me and then paypal screws me, I can file a claim with my creidit card and make paypal take the loss. Paypal even told me to do it that way...

Corporate America isn't consumer friendly anymore because there isn't much competition. We're dependent on their services (as they see it) and they behave accordingly. I've really weaned off of credit over the last few years and don't use it at all anymore. Money orders are a more cumbersome operation, but if everyone started going that way (or using an alternate service), you would see Paypal open up for some discussion and innovation. Business competition is the driving force behind a thriving economy. We are missing that these days. Then again, perhaps I took too much Dayquil and need a nap.

I really hate Paypal.......much like WalMart, but I still go there.

Used to be able to issue a full refund and not get hit with fees, now you do......come on!!

use GunPal instead... https://www.gunpal.net/

(I have no affiliation, btw, but anything beats PayPal's politics and bulls**t.)

I need to get set up with that. I don't mind fees but giving money to a coporation that is against my Second Amendment rights, well, frankly it disgusts me.

Thing I don't get is how some people are saying how a money order is a hassle. Go to bank or PO and lick a stamp and drop it in a box. I live in the fifth highest population city in the country and its not a big deal.

It is not PayPal but Visa and Master Card rules and I believe it is also a law that you cannot raise the price if the payment is via credit card, however you can offer a lower price for cash or money order payment and it is perfectly fine. Overall it sucks because you can pay your property tax or income tax with credit card and they charge a "conviniance fee %" for the service which does not make sense.

I think if you don't pay for an Ebay auction item that way, you can get around it. I don't think it will last for long with them letting you send a gift free of charge...Ebay sure as hell won't let you get away with anything. If they can charge you a DIME for a delayed start auction, then they are tough!

I had no idea that they had restrictions on the "Personal" payment, but I do now and won't risk someone else's account by doing it.

I agree that they should get paid for service, but I don't think what I am paying for/sending money for is any of their business. Period.

And a big +1 for using USPS online directly for shipping. I've even been able to complete customs forms online, and that is one big time saver! :)

I just had a buyer do this to me (pay via gift), I wasn't sure why the email from paypal didn't have a shipping address till the buyer emailed me to tell me he paid via gift, and the knife was already shipped so nothing I could really do about it. I'll be keeping an eye out for this in the future and refusing gift payments for goods, the transaction fee is the price paid for the convenience of paypal. Certainly not worth having my account shut down just because someone thought they were saving me a few bucks.

edit: Just looked through all the options at paypal's account settings. Is there anyway to disable gifting? I don't need that part of paypal and it'll save me the hassle if anyone tries it again.

I used this recently and they charged me the fee :D If I were you I wouldn't go there ;)

You don't want to get busted by Paypal, they will freeze your account and keep your money locked up for months. That's assuming you ever get it back. Furthermore, the are owned by eBay, one of the worse "let's scam our customers as much as possible" companies. Finally, Paypal is not that knife friendly either.

I suggest all of you do the best thing with regard to Paypal's stupid user policies: take your business elsewhere. Google Checkout is a great credit card processing service, it's cheaper than Paypal, and its knife friendly.

Paypal policy officially states that the "gift" option is NOT to be used for any kinds of sales. Furthermore, you are technically NOT allowed to charge an extra fee to cover your expenses with Paypal. If your paypal and money order prices are different, and paypal finds out about it, they might lock your account.

I was recently reminded of this, and changed one of my sales threads accordingly. If you look in the feedback section of BF, you will see that there ARE people who will go out of their way to report you to paypal if you're charging an extra paypal fee, just because they are ticked off at you for doing so.

Paypal is a giant ripoff, but many folks won't go through the hassle of mailing a money order, so we're pretty much stuck with it. I still hate paypal with a passion, though.

To Be honest, I find the ease and convenience of the Paypal system to be worth the 3% most of the time.. I really dont get it..

if you want $300US for your knife when you list.. Just Ask for $310 for the knife.. if someone sends you $310 money order then consider the $10 the hassle of having to collect the money order instead of clicking a button and getting cash..

As a non-us person.. I find Paypal a convenient Asset.. it costs no more than if I let someone pay direct with VISA???

just my 2cents.

What I hate is people that refuse to sell outside USA because they cant be bothered writing a customs declaration to send it :D when I send to USA it takes me no more effort than posting round the corner.

I will have to check that out.. I've sold over 140 knives round the world using paypal..

but then my description for the sales item is always a code.. doesn't say KNIFE :D

I don't refuse to sell outside the USA because of a customs form - I refuse to do so because I don't want the buyer complaining to me when customs won't release his knife, or something goes wrong in transit. The only way I'm shipping international is if you pay me LOTS more money than I'm asking for the knife, AND you agree to take all responsibility and risk due to the international shipping. It's just not worth the potential hassle to me.

I can understand your point there.. But apart from Charging for Insured Post with Tracking.. normally about $40USD Max.. what further money should you be charging? Why LOTS more money? especially if you are agreeing to no obligation or risk? Are you saying that if you post it in America to someone, and it gets lost in the mail that you will take responsibility and give them their money back? thats very decent of you :D

To me.. and most shippers.. the responsibility ends the moment it goes with the postal service.. (as long as you can proove you actually sent it.. ) Scamming is a whole different issue.

Perhaps my perspective is different.. I've sent over 150 packages from New Zealand all over the world.. last year.. Ironically the only one that went missing was the Bermuda Triangle (yep.. had to be there )

I've also ordered about 50 packages from USA.. none have ever got lost.. and no shipper Personal or Retail ever takes any responsibility.. thats what the insurance is for.

regards.
