I see a bunch of folks using personal tab option on paypal. IS it ok? cause FYI

And just to clarify my sorry and lazy comment on going to PO....

I like paypal. It is easier and sometimes cheaper than the cost of sending MO's cause i only send em priority with tracking and it all cost. I try and use my bank MO's when seller allows cause I get em free and dont have to pay for em, but depending on the cost of the item it can be cheaper to use paypal. On a $1000 knife though I like MO's when I am dealing with someone I trust:)

The point of my post is not that I hate paypal etc. Its just that I too let a couple use the personal tab without fully understanding that there could be repercussions and thought it should be discussed.

It's a good service, instant money transfer. A big reason they are hated so much, is they are anti-gun. Paypal will lock your account, if they find you are selling Guns or Gun parts.

Well that's something I forgot about. Thanks for reminding me. I am not a fan of gun ban advocates.

Thanks for the clarification and heads up. I agree though. We need to get each others backs and that was news to me.

I just wanted to add that shipping through Paypal is cheaper than going to the P.O. too.

I'm still a virgin when it comes to this. Can you clarify how it is cheaper. I like the convenience of PayPal and would love to save a little money through them.

I generally use USPS Priority Flate Rate and for whatever reason it is cheaper to pay postage online through Paypal than it is to walk up to a P.O. counter and pay. I think the difference has been as much as around $1.00 a package, but it has been awhile since I compared so don't rely on my memory for accuracy.:(

When using the "Personal" tab for payment I'm pretty sure that you opt-out of the PayPal Protection, i.e. if the seller doesn't send you the knife you have no PayPal recourse.

Very cool, Thanks!

I will have to try that next time. I love to save money.

That was my understanding as well which is why I am surprised that PayPal is putting the smack down so hard on T.

I suspect he means that paying for a priority Shipping label on-line through PP is a little cheaper than buying that same label at the the PO.

We use the USPS Click-n-Ship on-line service and pay for and print shipping labels at home. Then I just take the package to work and toss it in the "Out" box. You can also hand the package to the carrier, or just drop it off at the PO without waiting in line. The price is slightly cheaper than counter service and you get the Delivery Confirmation for free. USPS will even send you Priority or Flat-Rate boxes for free.

The only downside to the on-line service is that insurance is now limited to $700.

Well that makes sense... it's a gift after all, what would you need protection against? :D

I appreciate the heads-up on this, and now know not to accept personal payments. I would think this would have to catch up to any high volume seller.

The USPS has really been promoting the Flat Rate boxes, but I find that for a single knife, even two, you still save money with Priority Shipping, paying for the actual weight.

I actually do hate paypal, but not for charging a fee for credit card transactions. Rather, i hate them for charging fees for other transactions, for their antitrust lock-in with ebay, for their terrible customer service, for their willingness to hand over your personal information without a warrant, for their willingness to lock your account without any evidence that you've done anything wrong....

Paypal sucks. But it's what we've got, so we use it anyway.

You can open an account directly with USPS and print labels just as easy as with PP. I save all my ship to addresses on their servers and if someone buys another box of G-11, I simply click use address book, click on letter of last name and they are there. Click again, form is filled in. Proceed to paying and printing.
And it is cheaper than going to PO counter.

Back on Topic, I often use the personal tab, then payment owed when sending money for knives purchased on this forum from friends I know and trust. When you send money through personal, you have ZERO buyer protection and can not reverse transaction. Seems like great protection to the seller. And NO fees. I would suspect that a large volume of transactions would cause them to look at your account. But, buying from friends I do not mind the lack of protection and like them getting the money with no fees attached.

Just my .02.

Seeing that it was only a few transactions I dont think that vloume had anything to do with it. Less than 5 over two months.

More likely becasue it had never been used:confused:

Wow, some great info in this thread. Thanks Guy. I usually use a flat rate box as well but will have to look into regular priority when shipping only one knife.

I bet they really hate it when people gift money to their friends in return for a gun.

Not that that ever happens ;)

Yeah, regular priority can definitely be cheaper - I just shipped a smooth bolt FSH, and it was less than 8 bucks for the shipping, in a medium size box. For flat rate, I think that would be what, 11 bucks or so? Not a lot, but enough.
