I see a bunch of folks using personal tab option on paypal. IS it ok? cause FYI

a couple of weeks ago money got withdrawn from my paypal account, causing a negative balance. What happened: a guy who bought a knife from me payed for it using the gift option. I didn´t ask for it, but he was just being nice, saving me my fees..
He got into financial troubles a couple of weeks later and his bank took the money back from my account. He didn't authorize it, didn't even know about it, and the bank gets away with it!

The guy got me my money back, but no more gifts for me.

my 2 cts.

i would only use that option if i really knew and trusted the person paying me. If you accept payment that way, i believe you don't have any seller/buyer coverage under the ppal protection plan. This option won't last long, anyway. Do you think paypal is going to lose all that money?

How does paypal know your not using it as a gift?

I can see if you sell many knives on here, like 4 or more every month, but if you sell a knive every once in a while, how does paypal know your not really sending it as a gift?

I just wanted to add that shipping through Paypal is cheaper than going to the P.O. too. I'm not sure why everybody seems to hate them. They are providing a service. Why should it be free? I mean does everybody b!tch about prices of M.O.s when they get them or the price of gas when you have to drive to the P.O. too? I like to save $ as much as the next guy, but what is Paypal actually doing that is so bad? Just askin'.

Yeah. I don't understand why paypal sucks because of this. They are a business that charges for providing a service and everyone knew it when they signed up for it. Would you be angry at your cable company for asking you to pay them to get cable? Or your landlord for asking you to pay rent?

For those concerned about getting nailed by paypal for charging an additional 3-4% for accepting payments from them, I am reminded of my time working at a gun shop. Every new firearm had a price in front of it in the display case. Every price tag included the disclaimer "cash discount price." Those paying by credit card were dinged an extra 3.5%. There is nothing illegal about this, nor does it violate any electronic payment merchants' agreements.**

Include with your for sale listing "cash discount price" and I believe you are protected.**

**I am not an attorney, and I only play a gunsmith on TV. This statement is simply my opinion.

I have no problems with PayPal. It's just a business that provides a service I am willing to pay for. A few keystrokes at your computer is a lot easier than going to your bank for cash and then to the post office to purchase a money order.

I ran an eBay store for three years. The experience taught me that anything you can do to make it easier, safer and more pleasant to do business with you will improve your bottom line. So I always provide PayPal without an additional fee, accurate information and good photos of all products sold, and I leave the final sales price in place on all for sale posts. All of these actions show respect for your customers by making it easier for them to evaluate your products and the prices you charge. When you make a concerted effort to earn folks trust they are much more likely to reward you with return business.

Incidentally, I suspected the "personal transaction" route was too good to be true, but still used it once at the suggestion of a seller. Thanks for this thread to clear up the issue.
