I think the ZT 0888 Max is about to ship - the 0454 is also about to ship

The original plan was for 250 of each model so you gotta figure they order enough material to make 500 handles. It seems that they encountered problems with the Max model before the handles were color treated because the M390's are different than the Max's.

There must have been a few of the Max's that didn't pass QC so rather than discard a perfectly good Max handle they put a M390 blade on it. With such a low production knife wasting a handle would have been sinful.

The M390 with the Max handle would be the rarest of the run as well as the ugly duckling of the hatch. I would be a happy and proud owner of such a step child.

$500 is MSRP on the run.

Some folks felt that the price should have been lower for the M390's because of the steel change. I guess the thinking is cheaper steel cheaper cost to the customer. I don't see how ZT could possibly sell them for any less with what the cost over run likely was with the Max problems. Problems cost money, M390 is not as exotic as Max but it is up there with the top tier "super steels". I for one didn't expect a price reduction.

All my M390s are the same color and all are slightly glossy/shiny. The Max is clearly a flat dark charcoal color. The machined thin grooves in the handles are much more visible and to the touch on the M390s than the Max.

My favorite is still the original, although I gotta love the three sequential serial numbers on my M390s.
 
I've noticed color changes in pictures I've seen. Figured I'd just keep my yap shut about it. I wonder what my m390 will look like. My max is scheduled for Friday and 390 sat. I'll throw up a comparison shot. :D
 
Very nice. I should be receiving mine sometime next week. Looks like my knife budget for the rest of the year is tapped out. I just wonder how cautious I will have to be with it since it is not stainless.

Yea pretty crazy. Hopefully it won't be prone to chipping for an alloy with that high a hardness. Guess I will find out soon enough; that and how difficult it will be to resharpen as well.
