If it wasn't for Blade Forums, how many knives would you own?

If it wasn't for bladeforums I would have stopped buying some time around 2009 or 2010 at around 10 knives. Of those 10 or so knives only 3 were real users. So I would be using the same knives I already had.
The old brand names I was used to were gone or in Bucks case a change in blade grind eliminated them for me. I never heard of GEC and I didn't like Case. I didn't know of a stainless that was as good as 1095.
Nothing to buy.

Or so I thought :D

I think BF kept my interest in check. I came here because I caught the knife bug again and I might have just amassed a bunch of $20 knives instead of quality. A Kershaw Volt 2 might have been my best knife!

I blame EBay I got started buying USA Made Old Timers then I found this sight! Now I got Case, Kutmaster , Callimus , Imperial, Colonial, and Remington!

I've bought seven knives from the knife exchange area in the four months I've been active here. So, whatever a MST-7 equals...

Because of Blade Forums, I am more critical when I purchase. Sure, I have a few more knives but, they are better quality and are better for my applications.
Who knows how much money I've saved.

I'd end up owning the same amount. But it wasn't until I started making more money that I considered getting into the next tier of knifes with my Piranha P1, Para2 and 940. Before I got those my most expensive knife was my Wave. Other than that I always had $20 knives falling out of Drawers and crammed on shelf's some with newer some with beaters. But after getting into better knives and finding this forum I think I've actually bought less knives. Maybe because I have found the knives I'm happiest with and I'm done looking and upgrading for the time... or maybe my Buyers remorse is keeping me on the straight and narrow I couldn't say.

Hard to say. Before I found this forum, I only had a couple Buck, Victorinox, Old Timer, and Western. Maybe 15 total?
About the only knives I've bought since joining the forum are Rough Rider and Colt.

How many? Probably far fewer than had no forum existed. Would otherwise have bought them to see what was up with them.

With forums, I can read all the, "I really don't have a clue what I am talking about" authoritative comments and say, "now, that is not a knife for me, they are simply foofoo hype for this type folk, and their glorious close-ups of glowing praise over mudane quality machined lumps only confirms the instinct."

My buying slowed waaaay down after forums started ruling marketing, and markets started reacting to illiterate input, and being far more show than go.

I'd probably have about the same number, but I would be satisfied with the cheap stuff. BFC hasn't caused me to buy more knives, but it has caused me to spend more on the knives I buy.:D

Good discussion - thanks for starting it.

I would own the same amount of knives but not nearly as many great knives.

The forum has introduced me to many high-end brands and models that I would never have found on my own.

However, without the forum I may have ended up spending (wasting) the same money on less expensive knives and I’d have 5x as many. I’m just not sure SOG, Kershaw, Gerber, and CRKT make that many models. (-:

What landed me here is what also learned me about the difference in the quality or the product and service for knives beyond your basic Gerber, CRKT, and low end Kershaw. I already had some appreciation for quality but didn't yet know the difference in knives so I suspect my collection be of similar size but filled with more mediocre products.

It doesn't make a difference. I was into knives long before the forums, the internet, or even most knife publications. Without the technology we would all still be out there, we would just be meeting in person at the local lodge, and buying from physical stores and catalogs.

I was also "into" knives long before the convenience of the internet became a reality. I firmly believe that the quality of knives I own increased significantly as a result of the chatter here. But being "into" knives is entirely different from actually spending the money for nicer stuff. There are enough enablers here that eventually the price goes up and in my case most of the old stuff just spends it days in a big plastic tub. That tub has gotten pretty heavy.

I know that being a member here keeps my interest up with knives. The same thing happened with Colt firearms and guns in general. I do like to share information, but at some point you say enough is enough and I have pretty much done that with guns. Selling now mostly....

So, how many knives do you think you'd own if it wasn't for Blade Forums? I suspect I would own about a dozen knives that I mostly use and a few that just lie around.

Would you even know about all these steels used in knives? The 440A thread made me consider my hobby.

I’d still own as many (now approaching 200), I just wouldn’t have the advantage of all the good information thats available here. I’ve got a Cold Steel Rajah III coming, that I first heard about here!

I haven't been sold on a knife purely by frequenting this forum yet. Or, that is a lie, but those that i've been sold on don't ship to my country.

There will however be a purchase of both the PM2 and the PM3, which is very influenced by this site. But the interest came about before I joined

I'd probably know an equal amount about steels(not.very much), as i watch both Shabazz and Cedric quite a lot.
