If you don't yet have a .22 ...

I got an old Glenfield model 60 marlin with a squirrel on the stock. Paid 30 bucks for it used many years ago. And got a henry Ar7. I likem ALOT. Growing up I have eaten rabbit, gator, etc. But never tried squirrel. My wife won't cook them either. But I might just have to break down and give it a try.

OP; well done on the squirrels (they are just rats with better PR anyway).

Hope you get a deer this season as well.

Sorry for going off topic GK, I'm going to check Walmart tomorrow for .22 ammo, hopefully, they'll have some in.

No worries and good luck on the ammo quest! :D

Hey, thanks - on both counts! When I hunt deer, it's usually w/ a longbow on the ground on public land so I don't mind going a season or two without scoring BUT I do mind going a season or two without even a possibility of a shot. Last year I was out probably 2-3 days a week all season on land where we've killed them before and I had literally 0 shot opportunities. That wears on a guy.

I used to hunt squirrels a lot. My wife won't cook them, venison either. So, I haven't shot a squirrel for the pot in a number of years with a 22 rimfire. I end up giving away all the venison when I have it, of course they only want it if it has been cut and wrapped. What can I say? The other little thing is that I developed a red meat allergy and won't touch either now.

The one thing I have a bit of a problem with squirrel hunting is shooting them out of trees since there is seldom a backstop. Never cared to hunt them with a shotgun.

I own a lot of 22's. Started getting back into more 22 rifle shooting in the last 10 years. Enjoy it.

I think you need to find a new deer hunting spot. Gets pretty boring if you never have the opportunity for a shot after a while. But the squirrels are entertaining until they crawl up your leg.

Good thread, I've been looking at the latest Ruger 10/22 Takedowns. :)

DC

I got a Takedown a couple years ago and love it. I'm not a "gun guy" but I live back in the woods and felt a rifle would be a good thing to have for the occasional varmint trouble. Took out a couple of destructive porcupines and a woodchuck that was living right in my garden. After trying to trap the fat bastard for three weeks and watching my crops disappear, he had to go.

I was gifted a few boxes of Remington Golden Bullets and though I've had no problems (my Takedown eats anything, never had a round fail) this ammo is shit. Dirty, smoky and every round you fire sounds different from the last one. Still, it gets the job done. The Takedown is a lot of fun to shoot. Glad to have it around.

Cheers!

I shot a tree rat two weeks ago when out with the kids. Used my old win 67A single shot(it shoots 3/4" groups at 50 yds, open sights, with rem thunderbolts)

Still have and shoot my first rifle, a Savage Model 3 rimfire. It was manufactured in the early 1930's and given me by my grandfather in 1951.

It still shoots well too.

I love my .22s and I too hunt and eat squirrel. Just not as much as I used to. Only thing is since here in NY most all of our small game overlap after Oct. 1, I rarely carry the .22. My 20 gauge with #6 does by far the majority of my pot meat getting.

I have a Savage model 4C, mine is later, from the early 60's and is a great shooting gun! Those old savages are hard to beat!

Squirrel is delicious, done right.

No more .22lr, but I have a high power .22 air rifle I use to take the little tomato stealing buggers.

Might someday get a Marlin 39A lever, for plinking, and another Anschutz for target work. We'll see.

I grew up in the Deep South, hunting and eating squirrel. See no reason to stop. :)
This old Ruger Mannlicher stocked 10/.22 is every squirrels nightmare. I like mine in Brunswick Stew.

You just can't beat a "good" 22 LR for Squirrel hunting as long as it is a tack driver and all of my 22's shoot inside of a .05 at 50 yds. and that means a Squirrel anytime in my book.!** Fried slow and then fix some Green Beans & Corn in Butter w/some sweet Tea & sit back & relax.! Almost time for lunch ~~ BBQ....!* lol

I miss my Marlin 794 w/ techsights. Talk about a nail driver, cans reaching out to 75 yards were a garunteed hit in rapid succession.

Really interesting photo Dantone05. I keep looking and looking at it.

As you all might guess, I love 22's. My favorite for the woods is the Remington 541-S. Shoots good.

No animals today, still a quiet and peaceful day in the woods though. Here's one of my favorites.
