If you don't yet have a .22 ...

Took three more today and wow, was it a pleasant day. Here's one that's not too gooey...

You are absolutely annihilating the local squirrel population there Gingivitis Khan. Nice work man, really clean shots.
Sightly off topic but have you ever considered using a .17 HMR for the same application?

I've managed to find one box of cheap Remington hollow points at WalMart in this past year. I used to always buy CCI, Mini Mags, haven't seen any in forever. I've got a couple of hundred rounds of those left. A few hundred .22 mags. Which are never in stock either. I used to hear neighbors plinking all day long with .22's, don't hear it at all, now for a long time. I can't believe that I used to walk in WalMart and buy all the CCI's I wanted for less than 5 bucks a 100 and now all that's there is nothing, besides maybe a box of cheap bulk packed Remingtons. The clerk acted like he was doing me a huge favor too, by selling me those the one time I happened to find them.

My CZ-452 with a ramp sight I bought about 6 or 7 years ago, for 225 brand new at the local gun shop. Be glad when I can shoot it freely again.

No animals today, still a quiet and peaceful day in the woods though. Here's one of my favorites.

A target rifle for squirrel? I always carried something light. Of my several .22LR rifles, an old Marlin 65 single shot from 1935-1937 has probably taken more critters than any other .22LR I own. This 80 year old rifle is still one of my favorites. Light to tote, easy to shot, still very accurate.

Use gun bot. .22LR ammunition has been available for quite some time now.
It's always available if you're willing to pay an inflated price. The cheapest in stock(according to Gunbot) at this moment is $56.63 after ground shipping for 500 rounds. I can generally find it at the local gun shows and flea markets for that price. I'm not desperate enough to pay that, yet.

I consider a .17hmr every time I go to the ammo counter and see boxes of that but not much .22lr. :D

500 rds of .22LR plus another 50 rds of .380 delivered to my door for $60.
Natchez Shooters Supply.

With regard to the OP, I'd probably be that other guy at McDonalds.
Unless the SHTF and I HAD to hunt for food, I just can't see myself doing the whole nine yards like that.
More power to you, though!

I don't have a photo but my family member has a Henry repeater in 22lr super fun gun to plink with!

It's actually not too heavy, plus I'm a strapping lad, so I don't mind or notice the extra pound it may have on another of my favorites, a Winchester 68 that my father gave me.

It's more accurate than the Winchester and with the scope it's better suited than the peep sight on the Winchester if the range is past 50 yards. Also, in the event I hadn't channeled my inner Annie Oakley that day, a follow-up shot is easier with the 5 shot mag rather than fumbling in my pocket for a loose round to feed the single shot Win.

Fair enough mate. I was just wondering as to your thoughts on that calibre as it's one that I've done most of my smaller shooting with and I do prefer it to .22 LR

Buy it buy the case (10 bricks) since many retailers than ship to your doorstep free. My minimum purchase of .22LR cartridges is one case.

German .22LR turn bolts.

Pre-war (1930s) Mauser ES340B
Mauser M45 Training Rifle
Walther KKJ from 1968 (newest of any rifle, rimfire or centerfire, that I own)

I have more than a dozen others mostly from the 1930s-1950s.

.22LR rifles, particularly turnbolts, are a passion of mine.

I have one rimfire rifle, a CZ-452 Trainer. I love it. Laser beam accurate and with the trigger work and peep sight I added, it's a hammer on squirrels.

I am concerned about bubonic plague also. It seems to be making a comeback both here and abroad, albeit slowly. Not slow enough though. Fleas are the problem for sure. Just wear DEET.

As for the squirrel bot fly larva (wolf worms), they are not pleasant but they aren't going anywhere either. There are different ones that target different animals.

I don't eat much squirrel these days but I still enjoy getting out and hunting them now and again. My inlaws have a serious problem with them attacking their cedar a-frame house so I put a dent in them every time we visit.

I also enjoy my pistol, a Browning BuckMark Hunter. Crazy accurate, both of them.

The true key to FAST follow up shots on squirrel are iron sights especially if you have to bark him as he runs to the other side of the tree.

As I type this CCI SV is listed a available on a site liked to gunbot for $0.09 per cartridge with a four brick limit (which is 2000 cartridges). Eley primed Aguila Super Extra subsonic is also linked to a site listing it as available for $0.09 per cartridge. Those are definitely not inflated prices. Both are great cartridges. They won't last long. They'll most liklely be gone this morning. The key to good prices is buying it when you find it in quantity so you save the shipping and you won't again have to look for some time.

My last .22LR purchase was a case of 6250 Czech Eley primed Sellier & Bellot standard velocity cartridges. IIRC I paid $0.08 per cartridge. Shipping was about $15 to my front porch. .22LR cartridges are available at good prices with reasonable limits, if there is a limit. You just have to buy it when you find it or else someone else will thus making it unavailable when you finally make up your mind to buy it.
