If you had to choose one Tactical Folder for Self Defense...

for me its my custom emerson CQC13, or in a production it would be a spyderco ti ATR.

No question, the best folder to carry for self defense would be an AK-47 with the folding stock.

I am just an average civilian - I carry knive(s) for use as tools. Having an AL CCL, I legally carry a louder device that doesn't require such up close and personal use to defend yourself.

get yourself a spyderco police3 and ghetto wave it(zip tie) but if push comes to shove, use it closed FIRST and only open if it your desperate

i wonder how many more replies about guns this guy is gonna get after he specifically stated he lives in CA, and cannot get a ccw permit.

btw do you guys carry your ak47s with you to work everyday? does your place of work allow you to have it slung over your shoulder as you go about your day working in the office ??? is the ak47 light enough to make a good assault rifle for the light rail i will be riding to get to downtown ?? why do some people make such ridiculous suggestions?

I always carry a pistol and have done so every day for 22 years now.
I feel it's my obligation to make sure I'm never disarmed and my firearm used against myself or others.
So for weapon retention I always have a knife on my weak side.
At contact distance there is no better tool for weapon retention.
The one folder I would pick would be my Cuda Maxx as it's quickest to open and has the blade length to get the job done.

As far as using a knife for self defense.
You're born with that right and in the US it's protected by the second amendment of the constitution.
Don't let the PC police tell you different.
Using defensive tools to protect yourself or others from crime and violence is not only moral it's your duty as a man.
Only you are responsible for your own safety.

"When seconds count the police are only minutes away."

Don't know about California, but many courts consider knives, or anything else, carried for the purpose of self defense to be concealed weapons, so you might just as well carry a gun. The legal folks don't think we have a right to defend ourselves.

I own a few .22 rifles - and a Puma/Rossi 1892 in .45 Colt - that's it these days for long guns. I shot an AK once. Below are my typical pocket occupants, starting from upper left and going CW:

Sorry the picture is not better.

LHF: Surefire E1b clipped, change, keys, and Spydie Native (Buck 347)

RHF: S&W 296 (642) - in Mika pocket holster

RHR: Wallet & checkbook

LHR: Kershaw JYDII CB (Blur, BM, Buck 110)

Center shirt pocket: Cell phone & reading glasses.

Why do I carry a larger knife in my back pocket? I claim it is a tool - you be the judge. While I can legally protect myself with a .44/.38, you bet I'll carry... it really is my 'duty'.

If I had to carry only a folding knife for SD, it would be the biggest I could get, something like a Assai spear on a folding bungee corded staff, and forearm greaves.

With a five foot working length and bayonet refresher training, it's probable an assailant would be mortally wounded before getting inside with their little pocket knife. Reach & standoff distance is always superior.

Hey. I'll play nice. Most of us know what the real answer is to a SD scenario. Since the Mexican drug cartels bought up all the available hand grenades at Texas gunshows, we need to explore alternatives.

I'd be interested to know what situation your "TV imagination" has you believing that you will need a knife to defend yourself. Also I cant believe that you would plan to pull a deadly weapon instead of actually paying attention to your surroundings.

Seriously... under WHAT situation do you think you might stab someone?

I have many folders, but the Spyderco Militarty is the one I would want in a SD situation. Lightning quick for a 4" blade!

Yes a gun is the best option, and I usually have mine. But if the other person had no gun I would feel very confident with a large light folder.

If you are anticipating a self defense situation, carying a gun is not a ridiculous sugestion. If an unanticipated self defense situtation arises, than whatever knife you have in your pocket is the one to use.
