If you had to choose one Tactical Folder for Self Defense...

I'd be interested to know what situation your "TV imagination" has you believing that you will need a knife to defend yourself. Also I cant believe that you would plan to pull a deadly weapon instead of actually paying attention to your surroundings.

Seriously... under WHAT situation do you think you might stab someone?

Paying attention to surroundings would have kept you out of the situation in the first place, so that point is mute.
Knife users know exactly where their knife is on their person.
Trying to pick up a rock or grab a chair 8ft away seems stupid when you have some kind of defense in already on your person.

You don't always get to pick your surroundings. The only way I could avoid traveling the streets in DC after dark at least once a year would be to quit my job. If you have to be standing at point X at time Z to catch train Y then there's not much you can do about it---and there's always a possibility that a bad guy can get between you and the exit.

And the grammar police reading over my shoulder made me point out the correct word is 'moot', not 'mute'. :D

But the whole point is that if you have something to defend yourself with, why
would you start looking around the room/street/bar for something else?
If your life is in danger the last thing you should think about is
"OMG, I shouldn't pull out a knife, people might get the wrong idea."
If you're in danger and you think about other peoples views during that crisis, I consider that stupid.
Not saying anyone here actually has done that, just in general.

btw, thanks for the policing. ;)

Then I think we're in agreement here. If my life were in danger and a knife is all I had then I'd be whipping it out and other peoples opinions be damned. But the only reason I would be whipping out a knife is because I'm somewhere it's illegal to whip out the ridiculously large handgun I normally pack around.

Somehow one of us must have done a poor job or communicating (probably me) because there's not a thing in your post that I can find fault with.

I'll tell her you said thanks. My wife (the grammar police) is a former English teacher. Sometimes she just can't help herself.

THANK YOU!! if you have something made for cutting, stabbing, or slicing, WHY LOOK ANY FURTHER???!!
another couple knives o would choose would be the JYD2, CS 5" tanto, and the benchmade 710.

Since I usually carry a Kimber CDP II .45 every day, any knife I have on me is for utility use. I have no desire to be close enough to a loser to have to use a knife.

However in reality, someone is likely to get the drop on you if you are not paying attention, and who can 24/7. If someone is right on you, it may be too late for that gun, especially if it is deeply concealed as I do mine. So at least having some familiarity with the knife you are carrying would be a good thing. Hence it is probably best to pick the knife you prefer, and stick to it. Instead of swapping around your knife from day-to-day.

I usually have two Benchmade Rukus on me, mini left, full size right. They are quick and easy to open, and the large one is plenty big. The mini is generally for the sheeple, although some refer to it as BIG!

Hope I never have to use them for that purpose though.

I don't carry my knives for SD...

But i just got a Boker Subclaw...and this tiny little thing is insane.
It's a tiny little <2" blade. AUS-8 steel with about a 15 degree factory grind.

It slides into things and cuts effortlessly like a lightsaber.

Imagining what this would do to a person with only a flick of the wrist makes me feel slightly queasy.

It's small enough to literaly fit in the palm of you hand. But it has a huge finger choil and is almost covered in jimping. Retention is a complete non-problem.

I got it basicaly as a nifty compact box cutter...but if you guys are even talking about SD with a knife...look at this blade!

I have trying to figure out that ? myself. That is why I have a boatload of folders.I would pick my Chinook 1.Feels solid in my hand and more important it has a rock solid lock. The main thing in a folder is the lock-up to me.Now go out and buy a boatload of folders.

CQC 12, good grip and guard, my fathers cousin was fishing and stuck his knife into a large sharks head and his hand slip down the knife cutting his tendons in his fingers

I have several. I would grab one of the following.

Manix
Benchmade 9051
Skirmish
Military
Lonewolf Harsey Tactical T3
Rukus 610

I don't think the blade you carry is as important as knowing how to use it in both defensive and offensive postures, using both lethal and non-lethal force.

I like
Microtech Vector
Spyderco Chinook II
Spyderco Endura wave
Boker Plus Trance

and I always carry a CLB Lava as a money clip

the spyderco stretch 2 frn is also an amazing knife, i got one today. its a bit smaller than the endura, but a bit larger than the delica. its right in the middle, but it has an amazing handle that provides an awesome grip and a very sharp flat ground blade.

I'm with archieblue. I kinda get offended when people think I carry a knife in case of an altercation. The very last thing I would want to do is stab someone, in all honesty I'd rather run. If you really think that you need to carry something for self-defense, pepper-spray would be a better option. Although illegal here, I would carry an expandable baton, which I think would serve you better in a self defense situation.

BUT if you really want to carry a self defense knife, then anything you can depoly fast will do. Even a 2" blade can do some real damage, a Protech runt or Tantilla should do nicely here in Cali. Stay safe.

my friends brother carried one of those batons for a while. until he got pulled over and serached by the fuzz. he spent 8 days in jail and lost his job because he couldn't get to work. you might want to pick something else to carry

I ,personally like Bali-songs , preferably the biggest longest blade length you can get away with carrying, not gonna name any brands.Although any of the prior listed knives are excellent choices. It's all a matter of preference to what feels most comfortable to you to carry. Also don't forget a great lawyer in your corner to deal with the repercussions of actually having to *gasp* defend yourself. God forbid you actually have to hurt the poor disadvantaged (fill in the blank here) Though Pepper spray would be a safer option. With Pepper spray you wouldn't actually have to engage the dirtbag in CQC.
