If you had to choose one Tactical Folder for Self Defense...

For SD, I carry a Glock 19. I train with it regularly, it will serve me well if needed.

My knife depends on my mood. I usually carry a small Sebenza, but lately I've been carrying a Spyderco Manix 2, which would be an excellent SD knife if for some reason my gun dematerialized.

anything with a strong lock, good ergonomics and something you can deploy fast.

in most situations i can think of you would be better off not reaching into you pocket after you have been attacked. and if you have enough time to get worried, identify a threat and palm/open a knife you had enough time to get yourself to a better location.

on the other hand if you really want to be able to use it better practice deploying it a fair bit.

I would have a hard choice between: waved endura4 or a Millie. The endura would be great since you can technically get it open faster than any other knife but if it wasn't for the wave, i would pick the Millie. The Millie has a long 4 inch blade, a big handle incase you happen to be wearing gloves when you need to call upon the knife and it has a lock that will never fail even when covered in filth, blood and guts.

If you are anticipating a self defense situation, carying a gun is not a ridiculous sugestion. If an unanticipated self defense situtation arises, than whatever knife you have in your pocket is the one to use.

The county I live in is VERY hard to get a CCW.

you silly person, if you go into a knife fight, and the other person has a knife, you will be cut up even more if you pull a knife, cuz you know, knives are useless. if not, they will surely grab your hand and stab you with it a dozen times. yes, for your own safety, carry a double barrled coach gun, or nothing....there really is no inbetween. wildly slashing with a 4" folder will do NOTHING in a life or death situation. in fact, you are much more likey to survive a knife fight if you say, "darn it fellas, i dun forgot my m16 this mornin so i cant shoot ya. here, take my voyager i have clipped to my pant, so i dont further hurt my self, and THEN proceede with your slicin me to ribbons. see boys, i really dont want to get hurt, so by all means, cut away while i stand here and try not to hurt myself. what i really could use right now is a toothpick...or some shoe strings, yeah that would show you gang bangin scum. but alas, all i have is my JYD2".

id choose a police 3 g10. its large without being bulky, and is ambitextrous.

a gun would be a good suggestion if it already wasnt mentioned several times that the op lives in california, a place known to not give out CCW permits. but ok, keep suggesting the gun anyway.

and you are right, recommending a guy who lives in a state that doesnt allow concealed carry of guns to carry an ak47 with him while he goes about his day isnt a rediculous and completely pointless suggestion at all

I'd be interested to know what situation your "TV imagination" has you believing that you will need a knife to defend yourself. Also I cant believe that you would plan to pull a deadly weapon instead of actually paying attention to your surroundings.

Seriously... under WHAT situation do you think you might stab someone?

you know what archie you are totally correct, if im ever in a situation so bad that i have decided that i need to stab someone, ill definitely ignore the weapon i have on me which is easily accessible so i can go search around the house for something a bit more politically correct to stab him with, just so i dont tarnish the reputation of knives......:jerkit:

oh yeah, for those of you who carry guns, if you ever need to use it on someone, look for something else to use first like a sock full of quarters
, we dont want to tarnish the reputation of guns anymore either lol....

yeah good one.....you seem to be stuck in tv land more so than anyone else, living that mr rogers neighborhood lifestyle that you seem to advocate were you are more worried about the negative connotations of a using a knife in self defense more so than actually defending yourself.

like i said, please do not give out self defense advice ever again.

Good god people. Just answer the guy's question. If this was a gun forum then all you guys suggesting to carry a gun would be right. He didn't ask what kind of firearm you would carry. He didn't ask what type of firearm he should carry. The OP asked about knives. If you don't or wouldn't carry a knife for SD then shut your mouth and move along because no one wants to hear your other suggestions, which are usually retarded anyway. I don't need to hear your bleeding heart reasons as to why you should never use a knife for SD. If someone is hurting a loved one, I'm gonna open that sucker like he's got a zipper built in. Either that or I'm going to try to stab him straight in the face. I'll deal with consequences later when the attacker is subdued or dead and my loved one is safe.

Oh you should never use your knife in a self defense situation. Shut up! Use whatever you can in a self defense situation!

This is where Cold Steel excels. They make large knives. My primary choices would be:
  • Vaquero Grande
  • Voyager 6-inch
  • Ti-Lite 6-inch √
Also great choices:
  • Cold Steel Voyager 5-inch
  • Cold Steel Gunsite 5-inch √
  • CRKT M16-14SF 4-inch
Larger knives are definitely an advantage in a social scuffle, and though Spyderco makes a couple of large bladed knives, they're overly expensive. Boker and other cheap knives also come with larger blades, but I've had them drop out of my pocket and the blades frequently open. Not good if there are witnesses and not good if you're barefoot.

Good tactical knives don't need premium steel to be great and getting a decent one for well under a hundred bucks is where Cold Steel and CRKT knives really save the day.

Washington D.C subway platform coming back to my hotel from a late meeting. OR, walking through Times Square from the theatre to my hotel like I did on Monday night. Those are a couple of situations where I wouldn't legally have access to the gun I would otherwise be carrying.

My travel knife is a Byrd Catbyrd---robust yet cheap enough I wouldn't obsess about it all day if I had to ditch it to legally pass through a security point.

Knives I would choose for self-defense when I'm not worried about security:

Benchmade AFCK 806
Spyderco Endura (any flavor, but most likely the FS waved one)
Emerson CQC 12

If those are too long to be legal then:

Wilkins Grip modded Benchmade 550
Spyderco Ti Sage
Spyderco Caly 3
Mcusta Tactility

A Janich designed yojimbo or bewharned with a couple of his training videos so I know what I am doing

add the 300 lb dude that came after me and my sister in a parking lot with a baseball bat, to the list of knife worthy.
i have to say though, the whole time i was thinking "i wonder if i can find a pillow to gently beat this guy with, i mean, i really dont want to hurt him, im sure he just wants to politley introduce himself to my sister". i never thought about the knife in my pocket, after all, i would not want to hurt the poor fellow that wants my brain smeared on his bat.
imo, if you cant imagine a world where it my be necessary to defend your life or others around you, congrats, you have found the elusive walgreens world.

Spyderco Yojimbo because that's what I have on me right now, and I live in CA.

I think that the OP is asking the wrong question though because choice of knife should come after one makes a choice in what kind of MA/SD to study.

After watching Chad Los Banos use the Spyderco Lava in multiple self defense techniques in a video it seems like a great self defense knife and I've carried one in my back pocket ever since. If I could choose something right at the time I'd go with something a bit a larger that I could use in large arcing swipes so I would go with a Spyderco Civilian. The Civilian's blade is wicked and I could imagine it doing some serious damage.

I saw those videos, pretty cool. I'd go with the Civilian too. Most
people would run just at the site of it. And if they don't they're
either stupid or packing a gun (or a bigger knife).
