If you had to choose one Tactical Folder for Self Defense...

For self defense, I'd probably go with a Microtech Godfather if it was legal in California. Since it isn't, although it's not tactical, per-se, I'd love a nice custom large toothpick, or a daddy barlow. I guess an Arkansas hunter would be nice as well. Guess I just prefer the classic designs.

Jeez the OP asked a simple (if often asked) question and you guys get all theoretical on the poor guy. He didn’t ask would you use a folder for self defense? Why or why not? And if yes which one. He simply said if you had to choose one which would it be. A hypothetical question that’s not totally absurd.

If I had to choose I would probably go with something with a big blade like Benchmade LFK or the like.

That being said I think a knife is a poor choice of a SD tool. Give me an ASP baton any day of the week.

6" knife or a 48" stick? The choice is obvious. On the plus side, you're also less likely to be viewed as a criminal if you beat up a mugger with your walking stick. :)

The annoying thing about human nature in lethal force confrontations is that when presented with a gun, the assailant understands they may not have any recourse other than to flee, but when presented with a knife, the assailant perceives it as an opportunity to obtain another weapon to use. Wrong or not, armed citizens think that just displaying a firearm can resolve the situation without actually having to kill someone. It happens a lot.

Lethal force discussions on firearms forums are conducted in the same spirited manner as this thread - with as many insistent and apparently unknowledgeable comments. One thing is for sure, tho, and that is the discussions center on the tactical application of differing weapons, say shotgun vs. carbine in home defense.

The use of a knife in that situation is never brought up. It's never even discussed here.

(thread title) What's the best tactical folder to use for Home Defense?
(answer) rotflmao buwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

The largest part of the population who actually uses knives as a weapon are women in a spousal conflict - it sure explains why they're the ones to holler "knife" in the workplace.

In jurisdictions that license concealed carry, knives are often NOT included as a permitted weapon. Maybe because in a lethal force situation, knives simply lack enough. You can't get "one shot stops" with a 4" blade.

The reliability of the metallic cartridge in firearms ended the dependence on a knife for self defense over a hundred years ago - but not the fantasy.

i choose my knifes for utility. today i carry a spyderco ukpk. and i will use it for sd if needed . i train for knife fighting (kali), did some kendo some iaido, but i don't see the point caring a dedicated sd knife. i believe that if you have 2 knives on you, an utility knife and a sd one, but you use most of the time the utility one, when the "sheet" hits the fan, you will reach for the one that you are more familiar with, so big chances to be the utility knife the one that you choose.
on the other hand, if you have to go somewhere where you will be forced to use a knife, send the police, you already payed in government taxes more that you pay for your best sd knife.
excuse my english.

It's difficult to choose just one folding knife for SD. There are just too many great options. My personal criteria for an SD knife are:

Large blade (as along as you can legally carry)
Strong lock
A handle or blade design that prevents your hand from slipping onto the blade when the knife is covered with blood
A non-coated blade, the shiner the better*
Wave opener, is available for the model you want

I carry an Endura 4 wave which I rotate with a ziptie waved 5.11 karambit. The karambit has a short blade but it makes up for it with other advantages in a clinch or grappling.

* a friend of mine survived being assaulted by 3 thugs, one of which tried to stab him. He killed 2 of them and the other barely survived. He was very badly beaten but he deflected the knife thrusts and was able to counterattack. He was using a black coated blade and the attackers probably didn't see him use it on them, which is why they kept assaulting him after the stabbed the first attacker. Knives are effective SD options. Yes, they're not ideal but what SD option is perfect for everyone and every circumstance? People have used knives successfully in life-or-death SD situations.

Strictly for self defense probably a Spyderco Manix. Strong lockback, four inch blade, pointy and sharp. Handle material and ergonomics are perfect for self-defense.

You can't get "one shot stops" with a 4" blade.

Really? A 4" blade stuck to the hilt in one's head or neck at the brain stem usually qualifies as a "one shot stop". Then again, you can read about how a PCP driven assailant has taken multiple shots from police firearms and just kept on a truckin. Nothing is guaranteed my man.

I guess if I were knowingly going to carry a blade for self-defense, and it had to be a folder/small, it would be a Spyderco Karambit/Harpy or Emerson Lagriffe.

CNS shots always drop the bad guy.

Individuals who continue to attack/function while under the influence of a Amphetamine/PCP rush are generally taking shots to the torso, as most training focuses on Center-Mass index shooting. Subsequent shots to pelvic girdle and head, if they connect, generally put a stop to such foolishness.

Spyderco Manix 2 is a darned good choice and very reasonably priced as well. Get the fully serrated one because it makes a better slasher.

spyderco police. one of the first and still one of the best.

Especially when its waved and double edged...

I hate it when people show how stupid, or at least naive they are trying to convince others that there's absolutely no reason to be prepared for a self defense situation. When sheeple ask me why I carry a gun, I simply reply "because I read the newspaper". Some of these people in "Mr Roger's Hood" should read the paper or watch the 11:00 news and realize what's happening a block away.

Edit to answer OP's question:
I'd feel secure with a full size Grip, or even a Tenacious.

the spyderco stretch 2 frn is also an amazing knife, i got one today. its a bit smaller than the endura, but a bit larger than the delica. its right in the middle, but it has an amazing handle that provides an awesome grip and a very sharp flat ground blade.

I second the choice of the stretch II, I carry the ZDP CF, and think it would work fine for self defense and does edc duty well too! Regards, Steve

Using a tactical knife for self defense.

notice how many knives have ominous sounding names , maybe a skull lanyard or etching..
"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury , the defendant used his ( pick one ) Air Wolfe , Battle Cry , California Cobra , Apparition , Nighthawk , Special Forces Combo , Retribution , Extreme military fighter , AK47 , Black Talon , Recon 1 - "

Imagine your knife is one of those 'evil' autos or A/O's , maybe its got some tactical camo tiger striping and a blood groove , or a skull crusher !

My Heavens....

Just some food for thought :)

That said , if I feel the need for a SD knife I always go for one of mine that is best suited for such a purpose.

Then please enlighten us as to which of yours would be best suited. Perhaps your SAK Tinker?

Andy

Hell no! You don't screw around when you pick a tactical defense knife. It has to have a name like the "Kill'em-all 5000" :D
