If you had to choose one Tactical Folder for Self Defense...

There's a whole lot of talk going on here. I think most of you like to believe that you're smart and that you're contributing something to this thread by suggesting one should stay away from trouble, carry a pistol, and all the other garbage you keep spouting. I imagine that you feel you are superior to others due to the fact that you live in an imaginary world where bad things never happen to good people. I think that maybe some of you never get away from you computer long enough for anything bad to happen anyway. GOOD FOR YOU! I congratulate you all for being holier than thou.

Once again, the bottom line is that the OP asked a simple question... What would you carry as a self defense knife? He didn't ask which pistol, pepper spray, collapsable baton, or some other form of defensive tool you would carry. He didn't ask those questions because this is BLADE FORUMS and wants to know what type of KNIFE you would want on you if you were stuck in a situation where you had to use your knife to remove yourself from harm's way.

It is nice that everyone feels it is their civic duty to denounce the use of knives as a self defense weapon. It's nice that everyone wants to carry guns because it keeps you away from your assailant. That's fantastic advise that you're giving to the guy that asked WHAT KNIFE YOU WOULD USE AS AN SD KNIFE.

Get your heads out of your asses people. I'll be that guy laughing while reading the article in the paper that says some guy was beaten to death along with his wife and when the police found the body there was still a knife clipped inside his pocket. Do you think things like this don't happen in real life? Do you think that women don't get raped? Do you think people don't get robbed or carjacked? Do you think thugs won't beat the hell out of you for no reason whatsoever? You're wrong! These things happen everyday. These things happen everyday at the local mall near my house not 5 miles away.

I'm just wondering if they sell those plastic bubbles, in which you reside, in men's sizes? Please let me know where I can pick up the same super powers you have that makes you impervious to the bad things that happen to other people in this world.

If you don't want to answer the OP's question then move along, but I am sure that no one here wants to hear your BS about avoiding trouble. Sometimes trouble finds it's way to you and you don't have to do a damn thing to make it happen.

So the question remains... If you had to defend yourself with the knife in your pocket, what would you want that knife to be?

Strong, easy to open under stress, reliable lock, around 4 inch blade.
Handle which provides good grip.
There's PLENTY of knives which fit those criteria, so why get hung up on recommending just one?

Oh my god... Because that's what the OP asked. That's the whole point of the thread. Not what style, what size, what handle material, not what blade steel, locking method, or anything else. He asked what specific knife you would want in your pocket. Is this for real?! I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!

Chill out and relax before you have a coronary. Geeze.
Fine. If you want specifics, then why not a Spyderco Chinook 3?
It is grippy, with an almost 4 inch blade, strong blade, strong lock, easy to open under stress...

Archieblue,

Didn't you make a video review of the Spyderco Military where you said that if you were on a trail and ran into a "pit bull", you would stick the knife in the dog's mouth? Dude, I commented on that video but you did not post my comment nor did you venture to reply to me.

You advocate violence against an entire breed of dog, I find that offensive. I dislike it when people single out pit bulls (or any other breed) as bad dogs. So if the OP feels that he wants a knife that could be used for SD, what's the problem? He did not say he wanted to stab anyone, and he definitely did not say he would stick a Spyd Military down a dog's throat.

My first choice would be my Old School Elishewitz Tanto Grind custom, the BM Stryker was based on this model but it has a beefier liner lock and a more beveled grind than the BM collab.

For anyone who's buying into all that "knives are bad for SD" i thought i'd throw this out there. take it for what it's worth but i saw someone use a knife for SD today. i was at a bar and saw a fight break out. 2 friends were there drinking and one had had too much. someone came over and started throwing hands at them. the real drunk guy got slugged pretty hard and his friend ended up stabbing one of their attackers

probably saved his boys life.

In a real SD situation if i cant solve it empty hand than its all messed up :jerkit:
If i have to wave my CQC7 open its gonna be bad for me and the opposing side too:D

I'd rock a pair of scissors or a flat head screwdriver.... If you plan on having to put yourself in a situation where you find it necessary to stab people, please do so without giving pocket knives a further bad reputation. Personally, I'd use WHATEVER was around me before I'd even THINK about using a knife. There is NO SUCH THING as a fair fight unless you are fighting a friend, and in that case, I'd choose better company. First, I would AVOID physical contact. If that did not work, or there was NO way out, I would use a chair, a rock, a bicycle, my belt, a small woman or anything besides an obvious deadly weapon (like a knife) to defend myself.

this might be off topic, but i think it's related - last year in Pinetown [about 10 km's from where i live],Durban,South Africa a 63 yo gentleman saved the life of his grandson when they were attacked while opening their business.there were 2 bg's,1 of whom was killed.it's rumoured the old guy used a Spydie Endura.i cannot say whether the old man had training or not but he had plenty of guts and determination.
many South Africans carry and have used knives, both folding and fixed,in self defense.
i just thought that a different perspective was needed here.

I can just imagine dudes practicing their "knife skills" in front of a mirror.... Come on guys, this thread really is silly. Make sure and take your nunchucks before you go out on the streets of Gotham tonight... It's a cold, dark world out there! Like it or not... THESE ideas are what will make us lose out rights to carry the most useful tool ever used by humankind.

I think I should have the right to arm myself with whatever necessary. I also think a knife is a GREAT offensive weapon, but a lousy defensive one. I support "due process" and stiff penalties for murder.

Continuing with your line of reasoning and argument in this thread is as moronic as your suggestion that one search for and arm himself with some sort of improvised weapon (rock, paper, scissors) when the knife one is carrying will do the job much better.;)

My contribution to the thread, Spyderco Endura/Delica Wave.

I paid Nate $700 for it.

I can't say what is the best. I will leave that to the experts. But I can tell you what I can afford and what I like.

CRKT My Tighe for daily carry. It is assisted and opens quickly. The blade seems to be the right size for defensive purposes and very sharp. Also, great customer service from CRKT. The assist mechanism stopped working. I mailed the knife to their warranty address on a Monday, and received a new one back the next Thursday. This is the most expensive knife I own.

Sorta off topic, but at home the knife that is available for emergencies: the knife again I like and can afford is a MTech Xtreme fix blade that was on sale at a Big 5. Five inch blade made of 440C stainless steel. I know that MTech does not match many other makers, but I have to say, to my untrained eye, the fixed blade looks to be very solid with a good edge.

Something I won't worry about when it gets taken for evidence. Maybe a CS 6' ti lite or Gunsite 6' folder. Those 6' ti lights are NASTY Sharp and long. It would slip easily between ribs. it's it's cheap for when it gets taken.
