Hear hear. Its his question, no need to play "I'm a smartypants".

Personally, I'd take the large Buck Nighthawk for my fixed blade, and my Endura for the folder. Of course, I don't have a smatchet.

And I'm the "smartypants." :D

I'll play. ESEE-4, Spyderco Military.

If I were doing such a thing, I'd take a lot more than 2 because a) stuff will get lost, stolen, or broken, and b) you're not really going to know what you need until you get settled into whatever routine you'll have, and that routine may change.

Most guys and gals who have been deployed will tell you that a big fighting knife is just something heavy to carry and something that people will steal. They will tell you that some sort of multi-tool is probably the handiest thing to have...and those have knives.

its a hypothetical question, if you struggle with the concept or disagree with the question don't answer it or don't even click the thread.

No need to be so ignorant about it

I'm not struggling with the concept at all. Like I said, if I was going into war I would want a fixed blade attached to a large gun. To continue with your hypothesizing, I suppose in the circumstance that my gun has jammed or run out of bullets, and the other guy's gun has done the same and we somehow end up in hand-to-hand combat that blade would come in handy. Though I suppose the odds of that are kind of remote, and the other guy would have just shot me with his gun.

From what I hear from the people who have served, is that when they are not in actively in a battle (and even at times when they are) a multitool is handy. There doesn't seem to be much of a need for a fixed blade to do things like open MREs. I actually edc one myself, a Leatherman Blast.

Fixed: A.G. Russell Sandbox Bowie

Folder: Strider SMF, ZT 0300 or Spyderco Manix C95 (any of the three would do just fine)

What I have

Fixed: ESEE-6 or CS Leatherneck-SF SK-5 or Trail Master SK-5 or maybe MOD Mark V
Folder: Spyderco Military Titanium or Camo G10 S30V or CS Recon 1 Clip Point

What I'd like

Fixed: Busse Argonne or ZT100 CPM3V or ESEE Junglas
Folder: Guess the Millie is good enough...

are automatics also allowed? then I'd like a microtech OTF auto.. they are banned in my country :(

Difficult to choose just 1 knife. Depends on where I go to war and what is my mission. Urban? Desert? Jungle? Default soldier? Lone fighter?

So easy; Cold Steel American Lawman, and the Cold Steel SRK. KISS.
I will assume a leatherman doesn't count as a folder or fixed.

Fixed blade Id take my Hogue Elishewitz 5.5 in. (Sharp as hell and built like a tank!)

Folder Id take my Hinderer XM-24. (Enough said.)

These and a full-sized multi-tool (Leatherman)...

fixednfolder01.jpg

Ka-Bar Becker BK-17 and Victorinox Pioneer

I served as an artillery gunner for a few years way back when. Never saw combat (thankfully) but I got by just fine in the field with standard issue kit and a personal SAK (Vic Recruit.) Multi-tools weren't as prolific then.

To some extent it depends on the nature of the war.

In the past I carried a F-S and a small Sheffield-made FB because that's what I had.

Today, I'd take a Leatherman and a largish FB, maybe my Jack Black Knives U1 or my SOG Government or TOPS Hawk Recon.

assuming i wasn't carrying a fixed blade i made myself, i guess i'd pick the fallkniven A1... it's big enough to do whatever you need, but small enough to stay out of the way and actually be carried (a lot of guys buy these big "indestructible" knives and don't carry them, cuz they are too heavy) and If i had to pick just one folder it would most likely be a combo edge spidey endura... i hate serrations, but they come in handy when the knife gets dull.

P.S. 1. who's concerned about knives being stolen in a warzone?
2. nobody cares if you would bring a gun to war... that's a given!
