If you had to go to war, what is the one fixed blade and 1 folder you would take??

The fixed blade would a Spartan Blades Nyx.

The knives I bring will be mostly act as tools since it is given that we will have our ARs anyway.

+ Closer to camp (<20km) +
Fixed: CS Trailmaster
Folder: CS Voyager XL

+ Further away (or extended stay) +
Fixed: CS Scout Recon / Blackhawk Gideon
Folder: CS Recon 1

I chose mostly CS because their knives are more than adequate for the tasks and they are common enough that if I should lose them, it won't break my bank or my heart :P

Of course, I would also include a multitool which would be any Leathermen / SOG MT (pliers come in handy).

I would bring THIS fixed blade...

This folder...

And, if I'm allowed back-up, this Hello Kitty AR AND operator!!!

And, no. Sadly, NOTHING in these images belong to me...

Interested to see everyones combos:)

I just recently retired.

First off, no matter what fixed blade or folder you carry, you will need a multitool on your kit, preferably where you can look down and see it. This is why the RFI includes a Gerber....or at least it still was in Feb 2011...things tend to change overnight with the RFI "requirements".

Second, part of Murphy's Laws of Combat applies as follows...

The bigger the knife, the further from combat

Third, the folding knife is, without a doubt, the most commonly used piece of your equipment. Keep Murphy's Law in mind here.

Lastly, the majority of troops never leave the wire. The biggest thing they "fight" are lines in the PX, Coffee Shop, Bazaar...and obesity from the mess hall and fast food.

That might come off as abrasive and crass...possibly even offensive...my apologies to those who take offense to my choice of words, no matter how true they really are.

Knives in a battlefield is not top priority, except for fantasy games.
WRONG!

I was in Korea after the Armistice. Of course, for a long time, that meant very little. We had MIGs overhead, and our Sabres and Thunderjets harassed the "North." There were communist night patrols that we had to watch out for...and we had our own.
Some of our greatest friends were the Turk fighters which made up a part of our UN command. Our age, just kids, they would pick us up in their truck and give us a ride back to our base, trading cigarettes and jokes. Jokes are tough if you don't speak Turk. However...these boys were reputed to be the roughest cobs in Korea, for the way in which they interrogated communist prisoners or ChiCom sympathizers.
When they went on night patrol, they greased up and slimmed down and each carried just a knife. They went out at dark, crossed over into gook territory and spent the night cutting throats and ears. They were VERY good at it. No fantasy.
Their interrogation methods never heard of the Geneva Convention.

Fixed blades:
Benchmade Model 175 CBK (Punch Dagger), Cold Steel Safe Maker I Push Knife, or A.G. Russell Sting
If no bayonet is issued, then also a Chris Reeve Pacific Combat Knife or Gerber LHR Combat Knife

Folding knife:
Benchmade Adamas 275

As many have said, knife fighting in OIF/OEF is a rare occurance but it has happened. That said, I always had a combat knife just in case when I was in Iraq. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best was a motto we Marines lived by. Im not active duty anymore, but if I had to go overseas again I would take the following- 1) A Leatherman like multitool - probably the most useful tool you will ever have on you for obvious reasons. 2) A 3"-4" folder such as a RAT 1 or similar - for general utility like putting up cammo netting, opening MREs, etc. 3) A medium fixed blade such as ESEE 4 - Used on foot patrols for utility, light prying and other stuff you wouldnt want to use a folder for. I know thats not what a knife is designed for, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. Also, as a last ditch knife if the SHTF. Will it ever come to that? Probably not, but its there if the need arises. 4) Lastly, a combat knife just in case. I would say 6.5"-8" blade, double quillion guard, stainless steel over carbon. The blade length for maximum damage without being too large to wield. The double quillion to help protect your hand from sliding up the blade because God forbid you do have to use it, its probably a bad situation and your fine motor skills will be out the window. Finally, stainless steel because you will probably rarely take it out of the sheath the whole time you are there. Mostly though, just in case you get wet on patrol and dont have the time to clean it off. It happened to me and I didnt have the time to clean my gear until the patrol ended 7 hours later. I never used my combat knife to kill anyone overseas, but i always felt better having it. You can say all you want that "ill just use my rifle" or "knives are for fighting in video games" but ive known a few Marines in Fallujah that got to the point of literally use my kabar or die. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
