If you had to pick one knife to carry forever...

Well I've been carrying the same dlc coated fully serrated Spyderco police for 30 years so yeah one knife with most of the coating worn off and a nick in the tip. It still works great though. It gets carried when ever I leave the house like an old trusted friend. I've had a few different knives I've tried along the way, but that super thin spyderco police has been the cats meow for me.

XM-18 3.5 for me.

BK-14

It's not the best at anything, other than possibly being the best pocket survival knife ever made.

I wear mine in a pocket sheath daily, but it works crossdraw at 12:00 or even as a neck knife.

It's a good EDC, opens Amazon packages and can also take a tree down and be used for batoning. SUPER robust and confidence inspiring.:thumbsup:

A Victorinox Alox Electrician can do most tasks (and with class) as well, but I wouldn't bet my life on it, as I head into the woods.

A serrated H1 spyderco will make just about anything into 2 smaller things (isn't that the purpose of a knife!? :p)... But I wouldn't pry with them, baton with them or really use them much at all on wood.

Probably be some version of the Trapper pattern or the Spyderco Military. It’d be a toss up.

I've found my Inkosi to be the perfect all-arounder for me. Robust enough to handle most any task a folder should ever be used for, and about as gentlemanly as I ever find myself needing to be. And a damn nice knife IMO to boot. Carrying it certainly brings me enjoyment at least. It could easily serve me as my one carry knife, and even be passed along one day beat all to hell as a reminder of the adventures I've carried it on...But let's be honest here. I can't even pick just one knife to carry per day :D

I got too many that I like to pick just one.
Heck, I'm going to be buried with at least four ...

Drop Forged Hunter... why?
Because it's not noticeable in my jeans pocket.
Because it's small enough for lots of precision tasks, yet big enough for lots of bigger tasks.
Because it's a fixed blade knife entirely made out of one chunk of steel, it's stronger and tougher than folders.
Being fixed blade it's also faster to draw and use if emergency ever happens. For example - if there's a car crash for example, cutting seatbelt a second too late could be life/death difference if gasoline catches on fire for example, or if there's another car that'll slam into you or someone else.
And fixed blade will never close on your fingers.
It's a lot easier to maintain than folders.
And particular knife has 5mm (1/5 of an inch) thick blade. And 52100 steel is a good steel.

If I had to pick just one knife to carry forever I'd 100% go for a fixed blade.
And this knife checks out all important to me:
- small enough to conceal and carry
- beefy enough for harder use
- fixed blade
- good steel
- easy to maintain

I think it depends on what part of the world you live in. You may want to carry your favourite fixed blade for the rest of your life, but if such a knife is illegal to carry in most situations, obviously you can't.
In my part of the world only non-locking folders are not considered illegal weapons (as long as don't try to get on an airplane with one, or participate in a demonstration/riot...). So for me the choice would be my Laguiole Extra, which I have been carrying every day of the week anyway for the last 30 years. Of all the knives I have it's the last one I would leave behind. And since it has served those 30 years and is still perfectly functional, I would hope that it might last for the additional 20 years that I hope to be around. I have also gotten too used to pre-drilling holes and scraping mud off my boot soles with that huge punch. ;-)

I don't own any fixed blade, however good they are, that I consider to be such a 'grail' knife, or 'nice' that I would want it to be my only knife for the next two decades.

A year ago it would have been the ZT 0561. Still my all time favorite knife. But now if it's a only one or none its gotta be the CRK umnumzaan in a lefty of course. And that's a tough pick. I have so grown to love the insingo blade shape. But the umnumzaan is just a solid working beast.

For forever duty my Spyderco Shaman. While I find it heavy for EDC it
is built like a tank and I think it would have a very long service life.
The tip is really strong and the action is too. While I have 3 Para 2s I
am sure the tip is too delicate for forever use.

Shaman.
