If you were forced to use a folder for fixed blade jobs, what would you trust?

Any oversized Cold Steel with a Tri-Ad lock will triumph over any other folder on the market in the toughness department. I would gladly trust my fingers to a Cold Steel if I had to use on of their folders for fixed blade uses.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but don't rule out a good balisong with a locking mechanism. Here are a couple of examples that I would trust over a standard "folder" any day:

I would go for an Opinel. 9 or 10 would handle any job. And when locked, they're damn near fixed blades

Ding Ding! We have a winner!

A good fixed blade is still going to be many times stronger than this, really there's no substitute for a fixed blade, but I would put the Balisong at the top of the folder heap.

The term "folder" or "folding knife" has been adopted and established all over the world to ONLY describe regular non balisong pocket knives that fold. Yes, a balisong folds but by today's terms it should not be considered a "folder". A balisong is a balisong and a folder is a folder, two different classes.

Honestly anything with a tri ad lock. Cold Steel makes some damn good blades for not too much cash. Its a tough as nails lock and if it does break at least If you make it out alive then you only broke a $60 knife as opposed to $150+ knife. Seriously I think it would suck to be thrown into a survival situation with just a folder, fight like hell to get out then have to come home with your $200 0550 be destroyed

Honestly busting a $200, $500, $1,000 knife would be the least of my worries if I were in a survival situation. My life > knife, even breaking several thousand dollars worth of equipment is cheap in comparison to your life as you can replace those things but your life on the other hand not so easily replaced. For us knife enthusiasts this just means we grab another knife from the pile, not exactly what you call a major lost.

they've been covered but: tuff, lawman, hest. surprised at the lack of love for the tuff in threads like this.

Benchmade Griptilian

Foward to 4:30.

Case Peanut!

If that is not sufficient Benchmade 275 Adamas, that thick chunk of D2 can do almost anything!

I'd let the D2 on my HEST 2.0 folder tackle it after that Adamas failed.

Then I'd try my Grayman Dua.

I'd want to break the Large Sebenza last.

BM Barrage also locks up nice (this is the small pictured; large might be better for certain tasks):

SAK Farmer. You can cut, saw, drill and pry with it.

absolutely...although id never use mine to pry, it is the folder that is ALWAYS on me. that being said, I will admit the op's question doesn't really apply to me, why on earth would a fella leave the house without a fixed blade? :p

I've pried a bit with the screwdriver, nothing crazy though. But man it's a handy knife that does it all!

When it comes to fixed blades the things I require of them are not necessarily things that I wouldn't do with a folder. The two main things that I do with fixed blades more often are chopping and batoning. These two things require size more then strength. I would not baton a TI framelock at all but if I had to, I'd do it in the unlocked position so I wouldn't destroy my lockface. When It comes to the feel of a fixed blade in terms of solidness the winners are the TI framelocks. XM18, ZTs' CRKs.

Oh and I forgot the Large espada! That thing is just massive, rock solid, and I'm sure would excel even at chopping because you can choke down on the handle and essentially have the mechanics of a much larger blade.

I don't abuse my knives so they do nothing but cutting related tasks. No prying, screwdriving, or any of that nonsense. I guess I would if I absolutely had to but anywhere in civilization I'd rather just go grab a crowbar or a screwdriver.

After notching out numerous weather treated 2x8s when building a deck last year, I trust the SnG. More than once I thought, "I should go get a chisel & hammer", but the SnG was doing such a good job that before I knew it I was done. I don't have experience with or care about previous Striders, all I know is that the one I own is a beast and a very sharp, light one at that.
