If you were forced to use a folder for fixed blade jobs, what would you trust?

they've been covered but: tuff, lawman, hest. surprised at the lack of love for the tuff in threads like this.

I like the Tuff a lot. :)
Unfortunately, it appears that many folks aren't blessed with thumbs as mighty as I am, so they must forego it's greatness. :D

Or get one where someone tweaked the lock by over-extending the lock-bar (just have to remove the over-travel stop first), and then whine about how the lock slips.

Nice; I have the 83mm version of that. :)

So does my brother, and it has been his true EDC for, oh, about 6 years now.
It cuts everything, and the tip will chip ice. The edge has seen hell and back, and everything in between.
The G-10 is smoothing a bunch due to pocket wear and actual use, but the damn thing just keeps going.

My 810-1401. The Contego is a tank of a knife! Of course, I could also borrow my wife's Adamas...

Usual stuff are BM Adamas, Contego, zt 0200, 560, 30x, a strider Sng or smf, dpx hest and most CS knives with the triad lock (not in any particular order). Usually stuff with somewhat thicker blade stock since (light) prying could be needed.

Any of the cold steels triad lock or ZT 0200. I thought about BMs contego or adamas but in my own experience, their locking mechanism fails when great vibration from batoning or chopping is applied. Spyderco's ball bearing lock would be a great option without BM's weakness.
You shouldn't baton with any folder locked up. Always keep the knife unlocked. I'm surprised more people don't know that.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but don't rule out a good balisong with a locking mechanism. Here are a couple of examples that I would trust over a standard "folder" any day:

I agree with you about the strength of the pivot area, but the small profile of the blade would concern me a bit.

Cold Steel Rajah II. I carry it as a compact machete while mowing along the tree line. I took it camping and used it to make kindling each morning for a week. I've used it to remove between 1-1.5" saplings. Cut open bags of mulch and top soil. It has not developed play in the lock. The pocket clip however wants to come off when gripping the rear of the handle tightly and "chopping".
