If you were to have to go into war what 3 folders would you take.

I think most of us understand that this topic is simply a fun excuse to make another "which 3" list.

I'm sure jackknife, with his 11 years here and 11,000 plus posts appreciates the explanation! :D

That said, I think many of us find more realistic scenarios more fun and thought-provoking.

Like..."If you were going into battle, would you bring a folder, and if yes, what folder might you bring and why? If no, why not?"

Yes. SAK Super Tinker. It does the things a gun and a fixed blade aren't built to do.

His longevity and post count didn't keep him from making a broad stroke statement that clearly indicated a disconnect from the reality that knife guys on discussion boards are generally happy to explore excuses to talk about knives.

If it helps, I can take up a collection to print up some "post count matters" tshirts for you. You'll feel secure sleeping in one at night.

I have no doubt he knows quite well the reality of what knife guys on discussion boards are happy to talk about.

I'll take a milspec laptop. :D

Nor do I. Sometimes, we all just need reminders when we disconnect from things that we know. I don't know the guy, but I generally give people the benefit of the doubt. I have no reason to think that he's anything other than a great guy who simply overlooked the tendency of excitable collectors to dive head first into a variety of topics.

Folders only would be
1. Victorinox OHT NS, honestly the only knife I would need.
2. Cold steel recon 1
3. Spyderco Stretch

Fixed blades
1. Mora with Molle sheath
2. The new Ontario Freedom Fighter or the ka-bar look alike
3. Esee Izula with sharpshooter sheath

Perfect combo
1. Victorinox OHT
2. Mora with Molle sheath
3. Leatherman Rebar

I remember the time way back when, at 2 am, when we had stoner conversations like what if you could have kevlar muscles and carbon fiber bones? :D

Been to war. If your unit has a good supply sergeant everybody gets a blade. If you work in a cage you can't carry anything. If your running MSR's, you have ton of shit on you an in the truck. Foot patrol, truck (MRAP) in overwatch has the extra gear, you'll have your primary load plus extras, gerber/leatherman, benchmade seat belt/strap cutter, SAK, clip folder an if the CSM or Top allows it a fixed blade (other then issued). If your a Fobit, you have a knife in every pocket, nice new autos that my supply sergeant ordered four months ago, f'ing thieving Fobits

Coming home is fun. You carry your firearms home on the plane. But the blades have to be locked in the hole (contracted commercial). Customs is fun also, you may loose your blades there:eek:

Mission dictates what you carry. 90% have a gerber/leatherman, depending on age 50%-70% have a SAK (I gave 104 to Soldiers in my unit), 80% have a clip folder.

What folders I carried on deployments:

1) SAK in left pocket.
2) 1986 issued Leatherman, broke it in Camp Cropper 2003, issued a Gerber broke it in one week, issued another an another ...
3) Spydie C01 Worker, Chinese Lum C65, Gen 1 Police C07 (stolen by a 42A, God help that Private) an cheap local folders.

An a strap cutter an fix blade on my gear.

Hell, you need a knife just to open your nasty MRE's (or clean your weapon).

Only carry what you are willing to lose, break or give away. One or the other will happen.

Winkler II Belt Knife and Leatherman Wave.
Maybe a Spyderco Delica tucked away somewhere.

I think a lot of these posts are made by people who have never served in the military, and have no idea of the stuff you have to lug around.
Yup. Looking to shed weight and bulk. Not add more. And unnecessary redundancy is first.

My Vic Farmer or Champion for me.

A mentor of mine for the last 27 years carried a Vic Mauser through SFQC.
