If you were to start over what would you get?

Laconico Jasmine Flipper (don't actually own one yet, just assuming)
Spyderco Southard Flipper
Spyderco Chokwe

I am still waiting on my Green Para, and that could make that top three, but for now I will leave it off the list.

Spyderco Endura - everyone should have one, pick your flavor
Benchmade 940 - classic model, need I say more
ZT 0560 - fantastic big blade

Obviously rather subjective as most will pick what they like or have. If going for a great value and reliable blade Spyderco, Benchmade, ZT/Kershaw will cover your bases. If the sky is the limit then obviously you're going into the aesthetic category (though to be clear these will serve very well too), makes such as CRK, Hinderer, RJ Martin, etc. will be great.

I have found that every hobby or interest I have taken up that I spend a lot of wasted time and money buying items that I end up selling and losing money on before I figure out what I really want.

I don't think you can build a grail list until you have figured out what you like and what you don't. You can't figure this out until you own and handle several knives. If I spend enough time on the computer, I can get sucked into a new grail every hour or so. Just spend within your limits and prepare to lose some money on the way to happiness.

Right now @ 10:30pm PST my grail list of 3 is:

Hinderer XM-18 3.5" Hand Ground slicer with Blue Anodized Lock Side and hand rubbed carbon fiber scale
Direware Hyper-90
Curtiss Knives Large F3 Flipper

Tomorrow, my list will change no doubt... God, I hate knives :D

If I had to start over, I'd go the same route I took and get a Skyline. Next would be a Leatherman Wingman. Then a Spydie Delica and Endura

Ones that I have owned:
Lefty Spyderco Military
Ritter Griptilian with Wilkens grips
Spyderco Para 2 (any version is fine)
Spyderco Native 5

Ones that I've always wanted to try:
Lefty Strider
Lefty Sebenza

Sorry - no 'do overs' in life. If there was one, however, I'd visit the dollar store and buy three cheesy PRC-made el-cheapo's, putting the rest of a lifelong obsession's spending on knives on a Ferrari. Okay, maybe on it's spare tire! Perhaps on some more ammo - probably a brick or two of rimfire today. Seriously, if you've been a knife-acquirer for a while and have a few 'good' (expensive) knives, just estimate their cost...

Okay, what three knives were monumental/life changing acquisitions?

Benchmade 630 Skirmish
Buck 110 (My Custom Shop teardrop Damascus/flaming Koa wood one.)
CRK/WC 'StarTac' Umnumzaan
ZT 0551

Okay, I listed four... so sue me!

Stainz

Agreed, but I feel learning from other's experiences and lessons learned does help narrow down the field a bit. I'll be ordering my custom Large Sebenza today, partly due to this thread.

A week ago, I knew very little about knives. Thanks to BF and the kind members, I'll have a custom Large Sebenza along with my PM2 CF S90V

Spyderco Grey 20CP Para2 sprint
Spyderco Salt 1 yellow serrated
Spyderco ZDP-189 DragonFly 2

TedP

I thought about it a little more and remembered what I came to Blade forums for. Which was to find a good work knife at a good price. That being said, I've re-thought my three.

Spyderco Para 2
Houge Ex 01 4" G-10 Tanto
Cold Steel American Lawman

The Para 2 is probably one of the best value folders ever made, it'll slice and slice, the ergonomics are fantastic and it's not a lot of money.
The Ex01 is an even better value! :D The fit and finish is spectacular on these knives. SPECTACULAR.
The Lawman is just a big beefy strong folder that's inexpensive and tougher than most.
Yep, that's the three knives that I'd tell myself to buy if I were just starting out.
Although, I probably wouldn't listen to myself...
And I don't actually own any of those three anymore...
But really :D They're great knives!

If I could source an AD-10 there would be no need for another.

1. The Pohan Leu Bluephin flipper I recently ordered
2. Les Voorhies Model 13
3. Eric Ochs Otter (I have no idea why I want one of these so badly)

ZT 300 (dont have)
Victorinox Pioneer
Cold Steel Mini AK-47 because I already know I could really beat on it.

I believe I have a bucket list that will keep me busy for awhile.

1. Spyderco PM2 CF S90V - checked
2. CRK Large Sebenza - ordering tomorrow
3. Hinderer XM-24 - next
4. Strider SMF - next

Thanks BF, love this place!
