Im not a fan of benchmade, why should i be?

i dont like them, but i dont own one, i want to see what all the fuss is about :D

Gotchya. I've got a 556 and a 940. I don't like the 556. Feels cheap and the handle is too small for my liking. The 940 is like gold. The thing with Benchmade though is their Axis. It's a catch-22 for me. I LOVE the way it functions and how swift it is to manipulate. On the other hand I really do not trust the two Omega springs. I know people report that they hold up well but I just don't know. I'll live with them until they break or fail. Just my opinion though...

Ironic that I write this after the above post... :D

If you don't like them, don't buy them. No reason to mess around with blades that don't appeal to you when there's a big beautiful world full of other designs that you might enjoy.

Personally, I think their prices are pretty steep, sometimes downright outrageous, but they do make some unique designs that really appeal to me. Seems to me there was a thread not too long ago that asked the same question about Spyderco...

If you really don't like your 556 just send it to me I will give it a good home:p I love my little 556 and my 710, two of my favorite knives right now. I am not sure what the guy is talking about the axis lock not haveing a solid sounding lock up, mine both are very audible, yes the little grip has a higher pitch to it but its a small knife with a hollowed out handle.

With that said, to the OP, if they don't appeal to you why get one? It would just be a waste of your money, get something that you like instead and don't feel the need to check out the Benchmade band wagon. Just because I love my Benchmades doesn't mean everyone will or should. I am not a fan of spyderco, but the military does it for me so I will probably get one in time, but there are a couple more Benchmades I would like first.

I have never had a Benchmade come dull, so I can't speak on that. The axis lock is wonderful, and Fit and Finish has been great on all the ones I have owned. The only reason I got rid of them, is because I found a good trade for a Sebenza, that let me trim down on the number of knives I have, which is very good since I am going to Korea, and my base does not allow me to have knives with blades over 3" (which especially sucks cuz I was picking up bigger knives anticipating some field work with them while overseas ).

I definately rank Benchmade up there with Spyderco as my favorite two large production companies (large as in volume, not employees). Equally good, but different, as Sal I believe says (apologies if I messed up the quote).

well the reason im interested in getting one without liking it is my similar experience with spyderco. I thought they where ugly as hell and i didnt understand why people liked them soo much, then i got one and now im thinking of tatooing the spydie symbol on my arm :D

Some models I like, some I don't care for(recurves). It's the same with any other company. But,I can say that I've never had any quality issues with them.

Benchmade is an innovative American company that produces high quality blades; that's all the fuss about them. As a lefty, I like Benchmade knives because the AXIS lock is truly ambidextrous.

I won't try to convince you to buy a Benchmade, though. If you don't like them, you don't like them...

I can't comment on most but I bought one of the more expensive osbornes and it was perfect except for being dull although it sharpened quickly.

Dont own one, never wanted one, dont see the appeal. Is there something wrong with me?

If i was to get one wich model would be best. (im guessing the griptilion)

Get the 14205. Great little folder.

(However, I stopped buying Benchmade due to the associated politics.)

I only own the 530 and it's a collectors blade. I have to say that the axis lock is insanely fun. For my needs of a folder it's strong enough. I'm not a fan of all their models but there are a couple which catch my fancy. The 940/943 and the new onslaught.

What appeals to someone is a personal preference and no company can satisfy everyone.

If you don't like them don't buy them. Just because you don't like the style doesn't mean they aren't great knives. People say they are overpriced but you get the same materials and quality of an equally priced Spyderco so I don't really understand the claim. I love the AXIS lock and don't want to hardly use a knife anymore unless it has one. I don't know what sound has to do with anything if it is a strong lock. And the AXIS lock is one of the best engineered and strongest locks out there. It could make no noise at all as far as I am concerned as it means nothing. I have opened and closed AXIS lock knives thousands of times. More than I can count as I sometimes flick them open and closed hundreds of times in a day when I am bored or watching TV and done it for years. I did have one omega spring break finally but it is not a big deal. You can send it to the company if you want, or spend 5 minutes and make a new one. Easy for me to do so I am not worried about it happening at all. Just like I am not worried about a dull knife. I have had sharp ones and dull ones but they all get sharpened eventually and I end up with the edge I want and that tree tops hairs.

If you want to try one get a 950 Rift. If you don't like it email me and I will buy it from you.

associated politics?

Probably that they cut out distributors so you have to buy directly from them as a retailer and are required to advertise the price they tell you. Doesn't mean they have to be sold for that price as they can be had for essentially the same price as before the new policy.

unrelated question: how do you get a pic next to your name?

I wouldnt be willing to spend over
$100 for my first benchmade. What do you think of the 950 Rift?

I have been beating a Benchmade 527 Pardue Mini Presidio Lite for at least a year now. It has held up great....so much so I bought another one. I don't like all the Benchmade designs...but I don't all the designs from any company. I've tried several of the Grips and couldn't warm up to any of them. I had a reground large Ritter Grip in M2 that I liked but eventually sold it.
