I'm the smartest one in the room - the non-shop, non-business sub forum chat thread

I basically stopped playing guitar about 7 years ago. Not completely, but maybe played a total of a dozen and a half times over that time, on a cheap acoustic with horrible action that was given to in pity by the guy I gave my guitar and amp to. Recently, a local customer was very kind and placed a decent sized order (the five ring knives and Skinny Fat Bowie) and also bought several other knives from me on top of that. And I also completed all my orders that I owed deposits on, so to celebrate I found myself owning a new guitar and amp. Not top of the line, but not garbage. I still miss my Washburn WI-66 but man this Ephiphone Les Paul makes remembering guitar fun. I still got mad. Stayed up all night playing and these are the two best takes (which shows how much work I have ahead of me to tighten up my playing again), one of a song my brother and I collabed on (Atomic Rain, the first one) and another one that I started writing but never finished. It made me mad. But it's the most fun I've had being mad in a while. 🤣 Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. Ugh! Have fun seeing the self judgment all over my face.

I'm a realist. I used to be a pro-level rhythm player. I know what I am capable of, so this is frustrating, but I love music enough to keep going.

But I will take a crack at it. I triumph because I know. 🤣

Kill
Ride
Puppets
AJFA

That's what I grew up on for guitar.

Then I discovered dropped D tuning and went to work.

I developed an allergy for a lot of classic rock because every place I worked as a young adult had to blast the classic rock station, which played the same music nonstop day after day. But from a quick skim those sound good. I will give them a proper listen at some point. Thanks!

It’ll come back. We often forget when we’ve been away from playing for a while how much time and practice it took to get to being good back when we were good. You don’t forget the basics, but those finer things that made you good just need a little practice time to come back.

I know from playing keyboards. Stuff I could bang out in my sleep I can’t even hack through right now because I’m badly out of practice. I don’t get mad any more, I just move on to something easier, because at this point in my life, why not. Same deal with my synth. All the stuff I programmed into it when I was playing with my band I don’t even know how to call up any more, never mind program new stuff. Maybe I’ll get interested again when I retire. When I don’t have this horrible job keeping me in a perpetually bad mood. And when the puppy isn’t a puppy any more.

But I digest - now that you’ve got a new axe, a little time on those riffs and things will bring it all back. Don’t get frustrated.

yep this. few weeks of playing and you'll be much closer where ya came from. key is not to give up.....

BTW I enjoyed it.......wasn't bad at all....don't be too harsh of a self critic.....it's early still and new guitar which takes a bit to adjust to as well.....

We received some very toxic and deadly material last week....
I felt it was not safe working with, refused to do the job, but not after poking it with a stick....... I think I'm safe
So.....to be clear...... you were concerned about a substance, but then poked it with a stick, and deemed it safe???

My, Man! That is my preferred method of checking safety of a chemical/product!!! Consider yourself good to go!!!! 😀👍

Disclaimer: never take any advice from me! 🤣

Yes, I think it's hardwired into us as a primordial safety mechanism....
As a kid, how often do we poke things with a stick? Daily I guess.

They wanted me to go see a doctor......but I didn't understand the concern?

"I poked it with a stick"

I think they gave me a Look. When I told them that
