IMPORTANT: Software switch problems - Wait and import threads, or wipe forums clean?

There is an absolute wealth of knowledge on these forums. If this were a piece of real property, I'd try to have it declared a historic monument or something, so you'd need a permit to muck with it

Seriously, you put together a huge amount of information, it'd be practically criminal to just erase it all. I know, I know, it's expensive to keep the old data around. I would rather wait and have the old data imported, or, failing that, have the old data available as suggested above, as www.oldbladeforums.com or something.

Please save the old stuff. the amount of fantastic information that has been covered here is amazing. Can't we just archive all of the old threads but lock them to responses? Will this prove to be less problematic?

I have no problem with starting new threads for replies but to throw away all the info here is crazy!

I have recommended bladeforums to people and told them to just search for stuff they need. They have always found what they needed without ever having to go through registration. They probably wouldn't have taken the time to register and ask their question and wait. Weeks later, however, they finally decided to register and start posting. Without old info, we stand to lose future members such as these.

the archives are really important and i've only started to read them. of course you could always start up the new forums and then try to import them. Yeah, i'm basically saying the same thing as everyone else

If there is a way to save the older stuff I'm all for it. I'd be glad to buy a CD even if each individual forum is on a separate CD.

SAVE IT! IMPORT!!!
Too much "blade history" and just plain SOLID GOLD information here to let it vanish in cyberspace!
SAVE IT IF YOU CAN, PLEASE!
I don't care how long it takes to change over.
There's just too much good stuff here. It would be like burning a Library.

Slow down on the project, if it's not costing you sales. Take my word for it as a network system's engineer. Rushing through when almost everything seems a go is a mistake. You cross your Is, dot your T's, and then do it over again a hundred times. When everything goes through the hundredth time, the project is ready for the public. It's the little details that come back to bite you....... over and over and over.....

For GOD'S SAKE save the old stuff!

The "clean slate voices" in this thread have me absolutely shocked. If BF is forced to "start over" I'd be strongly tempted to walk away forever. It would mean that what we write is of no value and if that's the case, what's the point?

Sure, a lot is just "play" but some of it...here's one example: On the AKTI forum right now, CJ Buck has posted a letter of legislative intent by the author of SB274, a California revision to the state's switchblade laws. As long as that legislative intent statement holds in court, we'll be only minimally affected. We MUST get formal copies of that letter and we must track any revisions.

Y'all want to throw that away!?

That's crazy. And it's only one small example.

My vote is for saving all the old stuff possible. I can wait a long time for new software. But, the current crop of threads and the archives hold a great deal of useful information. I can't see just dumping such a valuable resource.

Please don't trash the old threads, they're one of the great parts of the forums, and we'll all have to spend time explaining everything to newbies when they arrive, instead off just gruffly posting "Run a search".

Spark,

I'm all for progress and new cool toys. The new stuff will keep the forum exciting and progressive. But the archives are more important.

By eliminating the old posts from review the newbies like myself will have lost the opportunity too learn from the vast amount of experience in this forum. If previous questions have already been asked and answered the forum veterans may lose interest in the fourm.

My vote is for the updating the software but not at the expense of losing the archives.

Please save the old posts, Kevin. It doesn't matter to me much if the information can be retrieved using the new software or not. Import/archive/set up a new domain/whatever it takes -- the important thing is that it not be lost.

Another vote to save everything - archive - whatever.

The new software sounds cool, but if it is at all possible, please keep the old stuff.

I can't tell you how many times I have done searches on a topic/knife/manufacturer I've gotten interested in. To lose all these years of data would be tragic.

Thanks for giving us this resource, Kevin.

Archive the old threads and archives, thoroughly test the new software; if you change to new and there´s no possibility to enter/search the archived threads, you should think about changing back to the old software, or at least make the archives accessible on CD (for a fee, of course!). This WEALTH of info is the single best source of knife knowledge ANYWHERE, don´t waste it!

Definitely. . .save the old info !

{sigh} Man, imagine having to hear all of those really annoying and lame subjects. . .AGAIN. . .if all of the past data can't be retrieved !

There would be some that would be real happy to kill the old info. . . They'd be able to accumulate 8,999 posts in a matter of 2 weeks.

Question for ya Spark.

Will you be able to add some more cool smile faces ? Ya know. . .one that's droolin' and maybe one that's shooting itself (indicating a really lame thread or post) ? lol

Spark,
As always, any and all improvements that you make for BFC are always going to be appreciated by most of the members here. However, I have to ask, no beg, you not to erase all of the old threads/information that has been accumulated over the years. That would be a real travesty (sp??). I like the analogy provided by Ken Cook that "It would be like burning a libray". I couldn't agree more.

Please consider what this information means to the membership before deleting it.

Thanks for allowing us to cast a vote in this matter.
