IMPORTANT: Software switch problems - Wait and import threads, or wipe forums clean?

searching the archives here is more productive than having every past issue of Blade, TK, and Knives magazines.

Please save the old stuff !!!

SAVE THE POSTS!

I have spent many hours researching and replying to questions. Lots of others have invested plenty of time writing posts as well. I too would be tempted to quit participating if a thought my effort was not appreciated, or useful beyond Today.

This forum is much more than a daily read. It is a record of a community, an encyclopedia of knife knowledge, and a great reference. PLEASE do not just throw away all that effort. Making the old forum archives available on CD would be wonderful if a way can be found to compile it.

If not, would it be too expensive or difficult to make the current forums availible online, but in read only form? Perhaps that would need a new web addy, something like BF Archives.com? I realize this would cost money, that is why a CD Rom version for sale might be the best solution.

The new software sounds great, but at what cost?

Paracelsus, SAVE THE FORUM!

Save our history, Spark. This stuff is hard to replace.

Do what you gotta do Spark. I personnaly want to keep the archives, but majority rules!

By my estimation the current total is 34 for saving the forum content is some way, and 7 for a completely new slate.

Save the old data in some format, whether it be imported and archived, or burned on cd and sold to members.

On the lighter side... if there is absolutely no way to import, why not make us do the dirty work? If EVERY forum member copies 5 of their favorite posts and re-posts on the new system, we should have all the important stuff. Just joking!

Save all the old info, there is to much stuff there, it would be a big loss to lose it all.

I don't suppose that this would include bringing back some the old stuff [threads] that were already lost does?

This new software sounds really cool, but I can wait.

The old information must be archived and saved!

Always remember - you are unique, just like everyone else.

I also vote to save the old gold. If needs be, a SEARCHABLE archive would certainly be acceptable, but we cannot afford to lose all this data, knowldege, and wisdom. Oh, and we can't lose Vampire Gerbil's posts, either

Hi Spark!

I'll add my voice....Save the Archives! Even if they're just indexed, searchable text files, the info is invaluable. Please take whatever time is needed to bring over the data. The speed increase of the forums is great on the new hardware and OS. I can wait for better software functions. By the way, you're doing a great job with it all.

Hank

I suggest that you wait to do it correctly and to save the old stuff.
BTW thanks for asking for our input.

Why the rush to change? Wait until the old threads can be properly imported. Save the library.
C.

We have to save what has come before. The information on these forums is far to important to have it disappear.

I love what the new software will do, but not at the expense of our history here.

My vote is to wait it out a little while. However, if waiting it out is going to take a chunk out of your pocket, clean her out.

How true, indeed.

Some of the worst stuff gets repeated quite a bit, but most of the best stuff gets said only once -- it's irreplaceable.

Also, overlapping systems will inevitably become conflicting systems. Test, test, test, and get it right the first time.

Thanks for all the hard work, Spark.

Kevin,

Ok, ok...After reading ALL of the posts on this thread, I change MY "vote"...SAVE all the "old" posts.

.

It might be worth-while to look into putting the "old" posts on discs (except for the "bad" ones), and then selling them, in-order to help raise $ for BladeForums. Maybe they can be sold as sort of a "set", with one a month, sort of like a "book of the month club"?

Kevin,

I can't believe you are even considering not saving the old data. As a systems administrator myself, I would vote that you keep the old data, as a new member to this forum I also vote to keep the old data. It is so valuable to me to be able to search old threads to find infomation so I don't have to ask or re-ask questions that have already been discussed.

As a service to new members I think it is imperative that you do whatever possible to retain the old information.
