Impulse buys? Who's guilty?

I usually spend considerable time online looking at pics, searching reviews, specs and this forum of course, before I purchase a knife. And even after all that, it usually takes me 3 or 4 days of humming and hawing before I finally pull the trigger on something new.

Today, I did something totally out of my norm and bought a new Cold Steel Warcraft Tanto on fleabay for a pretty good price. I generally don't shop on Ebay, I generally don't have an overwhelming fondness for tanto blades, and I generally don't buy Cold Steel knives. Literally in the span of 2 minutes, I went from not even thinking about Cold Steel, to buying one.

I guess I need some validation here......who else has bought something with limited-to-no forethought, and what did you buy?

I don't think an impulse Cold Steel buy can go wrong, but maybe I don't know their offerings as well as others. That said, I bought a CRKT Batum on an impulse and discovered I don't like finger coils or frame locks, and I bought a Stedemon ZKC-BP02 and discovered I should have avoided that impulse..

It’s fine, happens to the best of us. I bought a Cold Steel axe that I objectively don’t need, lol.

As long as it doesn’t happen too often, I wouldn’t worry about it.

do all the time. rarely let down though.

I impulses bought three of these a bit ago for my sons and I go beat up and by golly……pretty tough !

Cold Steel Special Projects (as they used to be called) are my tipsy Amazon junk food impulse buys.

I think I have at least 5 tomahawks purchased under various quantities of bourbon. None have I regretted. All have been worth the price of admission.

Case in point, I bought a CS Spontoon. The curved tear drop style to compliment my diamond head one (also a drunk buy). I, in my what I thought, rational mind thought the diamond point would help me on my axe throwing for competition. I have always thrown point first (axe hitting at about 15 degrees instead of 90) for effect, but in a game having maximum cutting area tends to score better.

The diamond Spontoon did help, but I kinda grew to love the sheer martial ferocity of the design. I kinda wanted a claw shaped version to go with it.

A random Amazon algorithm suggestion a few months later (last night), had me hitting the Buy Now button. I expect my prize here Monday.

Same with my automatic knives. Got an itch, scratched it with a Microtech. Wash, rinse, repeat 4 times. Looking to add another in the coming weeks for vacation carry. You know, the one I bought 3 weeks ago isn't quite perfect. Time to invent a new reason to dropp 3 bills on another otf, right;)

So far I have never returned or cancelled an impulse purchase.
They are usually more awkward or expensive than usual. I would not have bought them without an impulse that took over my Cartesian brain. Or without a few drinks too many.

Actually I often like them more than my carefully thought about pieces!

Man, the CS Norse Hawk looks pretty cool.

Impulse bought myself a Cold Steel Finn Wolf. Was not disappointed. But then I also impulse bought SOG Trident and paid the price.

come on admit it guys!
obviously casual knife browsing
that ends up with a buy is near premeditated.
on a look out hoping to find something.
such purchases are the fatal result of
knowingly undergoing sessions of
self hypnosis which triggers buying.

impulse buying would be something explicitly random and entirely unplanned.
like going to a yard sale and running through box loads of trashed items;
hoping to find any knife just to justify rummaging dusty worned pre loved items. so why would anyone buy
a used knife that have seen better days ?
hard to explain buying used knives of
this nature.except that its instinctively
compulsive
garage sale

Ya I have a heap of C.S. Machetes, some have never been used. Some turned out to be pretty cool units

FYI this thread made me impulse buy another Cold Steel shovel.

I went camping for three days last week and used the one I already have for all sorts of things.

Hacking at protruding roots that were around my tent.
Cut a few branches to clear an area by my camp.
Dug a hole to make a fire pit.
Scraped fallen debris using the shovel as a impromptu rake.
Picked up dog crap and flung it.
Lastly, stuck it into the ground in front of my camp chair to show off a bit.

All that utility, and this thread, made me realize how much I like it. So now…one more is on the way!

Ha, my last halfway decent impulse buy was also a tanto, a used TOPS CAT off the sales forum here several years ago. It's got the ergonomics of a brick, and the sheath retention is not great. I've got big plans for it yet, but right now it sits in a box waiting for a resupply of round tuits.

I also tend to scoop up interesting used kitchen knives and beat-up slipjoints from thrift stores- they mostly keep the Cat company for now.

I‘m guilty of doing it WAY too much. I guess it’s kinda comforting that I have some company in this “bad habit”. Many of mine are duplicates because: “why not?”. Most stay in the collection for some interminable amount of time. And a few go right back on the market….at a loss of course. Certainly there could be far worse habits…..and I’m too old to bother changing this one. And, every once in a while, I come across a true grail. So WTH, I guess it’s worth it. 😉

I put an Alox Electrician on my Christmas list, because my wife has a crush on Macguyver, and by extension somehow, on SAKs. It's been in my pocket every work day for the past three years.

A Mini-CQC-7 with a bonus from work. I like it, but I can't convince myself to carry it.

This thing.

I like Sheepsfoot blades, I wanted something high speed/low drag, and I had a gift card for Jeff Bezos' Online Emporium.
