Impulse buys? Who's guilty?

I'm pretty good at fighting the impulse buy. I stick to a strict budget so I'm good at saying "I'll pass".

When I do an impulse buy, it is usually from the For Sale section here. I just bought a Kershaw Bareknuckle in 20CV yesterday. I keep telling myself I don't like metal handle knives but thought I'd give this a try. Oh, and I want to try 20CV too.

I have spontaneously bought limited drop knives if I happened to hear about them in time in the past. I acquired some of my favorite knives this way - the Hinderer Eklipse that is now always in my pocket was an impulse buy because DLT happened to post them when I was looking. I would never have considered the Eklipse in the past, but I'm glad that was my first one, because I ended up not liking the XM-18. Riding that high I bought some Half Tracks, which I also love, just because USA Made Blade happened to drop them while I was looking.

I've even bought customs that way - happened to see a Kopis Designs pikal knife post on their site and snagged it.

But I limit it to things I know are popular, because I do often decide that I shouldn't have spent the money, and then it's nice to be able to recoup most or all of what I impulsively spent when the cold, hard reality of my credit card balance wakes me up.

So far I have never returned or cancelled an impulse purchase.
They are usually more awkward or expensive than usual. I would not have bought them without an impulse that took over my Cartesian brain. Or without a few drinks too many.

Actually I often like them more than my carefully thought about pieces!

I wish I had impulse purchased that Spyderco.

Probably a quarter to a half of my knives came as impulse buys, often after somebody talks them up here on BF. Of course, I buy only a small fraction of the knives I see discussed here, so it has to be more than that. Usually I buy cheaper knives anyway, so the impulse doesn’t cost me as much.
I did spring on the Ray Laconico Keen, not really expensive in the larger picture, but still up there for me, and a type of knife I do not ordinarily buy.
Another impulse ended op costing me some dough. I would never have considered a SYKCO knife had I not followed up on a tip I read on BF. That knife introduced me to the Resiprene C handles, so the next time I got a chance, I bought another, and in fairly short order a third, which has yet to arrive.

Wow, getting personal, are we? I have, I do, I will, I admit. Canal Street stuff makes my knees weak, my brain addled, and my nostrils flare. Lol

XM-24, Knifecenter harpoon spanto. I was looking at their website when they first went up and saw all of them, had to order one in working finish.

I've been looking at Busse for a while and finally ordered one knowing the leadtime is weeeeks to months out (according to their website), expecting to have it near the end of the year or possibly early next year. My order was ready in less than a week and I should have it tomorrow...

I'm guilty. I did an impulse buy on the Cutlery Shop PM2 Wharncliffe and also Native Chief both of which are still sitting in there boxes. Once I have time I'll let them go but this is two examples of the hysteria of limited releases.

A few minutes ago, I did an impulse "I'LL TAKE IT!" Then I realized it wasn't what I thought it was. Now that's an impulse disorder . . . it was so strong that made me functionally illiterate for a few moments!

I don't know if I really impulse buy knives since I spend so much time looking and thinking about them and telling myself "no you don't need another knife" to try and tamp down the urge lol. And now I have 2 new Microtechs and have just spent more money on two knives than I ever had before.

I did impulse buy an electric scooter this weekend. I took in a tire off my stepson's scooter to the local e-bike shop for repair and I saw this thing. It spoke to me saying "you need me in your life." A soft glow a heavenly chorus the whole bit. Before that wanting an electric scooter had never crossed my mind. Now I am an e-scooter guy as well as a knife guy.

I do it a lot! Sometimes it’s a keeper, sometimes not. The Warcraft Tanto is. It’s an awesome blade for a great price in an amazing steel. No worries; you won’t regret that purchase. I do recommend a Specs Ops sheath for it or something of the kind, as the stock sheath isn’t the greatest.

Ordered it. Took it out of the box. Opened and closed it. Put it back in the box. Box has been sitting in my "box of misfit knives" ever since (several years).

Nothing "wrong" with the knife. It just didn't do it for me. And for a price of around $30, I didn't feel like going through the hassle of returning it.

My REAL problem used to be- I'd see a knife I liked, couldn't stop thinking about it, did lots of research, debated whether or not I really needed it and if I'd have any use for it, then in the end I would just buy it so I could stop thinking about it. I have a few regrettable purchases as a result (I'm looking at you Lionsteel M5).

But I finally learned my lesson and now follow strict knife-buying discipline.
