Impulse buys? Who's guilty?

I have too many hobbies so my "knife hobby budget" isn't large enough for impulse buys. And I've been setting up a corner of my shop to try making my own, so that budget has been steadily drained.

I usually spend considerable time online looking at pics, searching reviews, specs and this forum of course, before I purchase a knife. And even after all that, it usually takes me 3 or 4 days of humming and hawing before I finally pull the trigger on something new.

Today, I did something totally out of my norm and bought a new Cold Steel Warcraft Tanto on fleabay for a pretty good price. I generally don't shop on Ebay, I generally don't have an overwhelming fondness for tanto blades, and I generally don't buy Cold Steel knives. Literally in the span of 2 minutes, I went from not even thinking about Cold Steel, to buying one.

I guess I need some validation here......who else has bought something with limited-to-no forethought, and what did you buy?
I've done far worse , under the influence of adult refreshments , late at night and earliest AM . :p

The Warcraft Tanto is a top notch extreme hard use / survival type field knife . Versatile and nearly indestructible (unless you try on purpose ) .:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I don't know if I really impulse buy knives since I spend so much time looking and thinking about them and telling myself "no you don't need another knife" to try and tamp down the urge lol. And now I have 2 new Microtechs and have just spent more money on two knives than I ever had before.

I did impulse buy an electric scooter this weekend. I took in a tire off my stepson's scooter to the local e-bike shop for repair and I saw this thing. It spoke to me saying "you need me in your life." A soft glow a heavenly chorus the whole bit. Before that wanting an electric scooter had never crossed my mind. Now I am an e-scooter guy as well as a knife guy.

What ever happened to making those things out of soap boxes and metal skate wheels?

I also bought Warcraft tanto on an impulse when I saw a deal for it... it's a really good knife.

Yeah, I semi impulse buy here on this forum. I do have a thought about approximately what I want, and when it shows up, I buy it. Unfortunately, they're almost always very nice, and I can't bring myself to use them. So, the fun is mostly in the chase and acquisition.

It'd be nice if more users would come up here, in the automatic subforum.

There are two ways to build a collection. You can be very focused and deliberate and build a very deep narrowly focused group, where you seek to end up with examples of every version of the Spyderco Police or Buck 124 that has ever been made and become the subject matter expert on those items; or, you can be more of a generalist and seek out all kinds of knives that you consider interesting or somehow desirable; perhaps it’s military knives, fighting, whittling or bush crafting knives of various kinds that sparks your interest. If you are like the first group you will be chasing the odd sprint run, but you will know exactly what you are looking for. But, if in the latter group then it does come down to impulse buying; where you have to decide of every knife offered if it fits and adds color to your diverse subject matter.

Are we talking cutlery only?
I hate to admit it, but I've bought a few fishing lures and spinners on a whim on the way to the water...

Just ordered another Mora Garberg and Cold Steel Outdoorman.

I haven’t even used the ones I have yet…

😂

Darn this thread!

Guilty on seeing and buying.
Guilty on doubles (and triples) of knives I like ... just in case they are discontinued or ...
Guilty on buying knives that I haven't used and likely won't any time soon.
Guilty hoarding but calling it collecting.

Now that I've come clean I should also mention that I am in a support group (read: enabling group) called BLADE FORUMS!
This sounds a little too familiar. On all points.

I really like the AD-10 but do not carry it as often as I like due to those (many) times when I am not wearing heavier duty pants.
AD-10 and lightweight trousers are not a good match. But, I like the knife so much that just in case I ever wear it out (NOT HAPPENING) or it gets discontinued I have a back-up, and a back-up for the back-up. The, I saw the limited edition version with black blade and green handles and ... never mind; I've already said way too much!

The appearance of a 10% off coupon led me to an attempted impulse buy last week. I say attempted because it's a vendor that is notorious for having items on their wbe site they neither have in stock nor are they able to acquire. It was something that is sold out pretty much everywhere, so I'm taking the chance.

Honestly most of my knife purchases are impulse buys lately. Seems like even regular production models are so hard to come by these days you have to jump on them as soon as you see it available.

All of my favorite knives were "impulse" buys. As per Merriam-Webster, an impulse can be defined as "a propensity or natural tendency usually other than rational". As a knife collector, I have more knives than I rationally need or can use on a daily functional basis, but I continue to buy them nonetheless. Not only that, I find it difficult to justify the price of some of my knife purchases unless I have worked myself up into a frenzy of FOMO (fear of missing out) or had a few too many drinks.

I'd say at least half of my entire collection was purchased under some form of impulse condition. What can I say....I'm very impressionable. 😁

But this was one of my larger impulse purchases. After having spent over $800 on new tires and saddlebags on my old bike, I walked past this thing in the showroom on my way to pick it up. I couldn't take my eyes off this new bright blue animal. Then I sat on it, and became a smitten kitten. My wife said the look on my face was exactly what every sales guy wants to see. They knew I would not go home without two bikes, or a major temper tantrum. Damn checkbook got burned a little that day. But that was back in 2010 when I still had an income. Fixed income retirement kinda sucks.

I quasi-impulse, quasi-needed a knife the other day. I found myself knifeless and wandered into a store called "Highlander" and walked out with an Alox Cadet.

That’s no impulse, dude, that’s a genuine emergency. If you don’t mind my asking, how did such an unthinkable condition come to happen? (I ask only for the educational value to your fellow forum members.)
