In defense of a friend

Nice one Bo, but who said you can join in?
biggrin.gif
Just kidding!

That is a nice blade... How long is it? I will ask the same question of you. Is that a Norris DAmascus, because I heard that he has the patent on it?

Let me see if I have a fixed blade for you... Got one!

Bob - that Caffrey piece that Bo has USED to be mine. I made payments on that sucker for six months and picked it up at this year's Blade Show. Unfortunately, it was simply too large a knife for me. Through a series of deals, that bowie became my Caffrey boot knife that I showed earlier in this thread. Much more my size. Bo ended up with Prairie Storm (the one pictured) and another Caffrey san-mai bowie called Wind Song that's every bit as pretty. Where's that pic Bo???

The san-mai blade on my meteorite knife was actually forged (pressed?) by Tim Zowada for Dan Fronefield while Dan was in the process of moving and setting up a new shop.

Here's the first knife I ever (mostly) made. I spend a few days down at GenO's shop working on this little hunter with him. We made two identical knives. He'd work on one, showing me what to do. I'd then attempt to match it on my knife. In the end (and with GenO stepping in to save me from self-destructing a few times) this was the final result. It's pictured here with my ever-present Seecamp .32 pistol. It has a 2.5" ATS-34 blade. It's 6" long overall with a tapered tang and red liners under the black micarta handles.

Here's a pic of both knives together with one of the sheaths. The one I did most of the work on is at the top.

GenO is primarily responsible for sinking the knifemaking hook into me.

Fortunately, he has the patience to show me the ropes.

BTW - that Hoskins piece is slick.

And no, Bo's san-mai is an Ed Caffrey creation. It has a 52100 core with a 15N20/1084 damascus outer shell. The blade is approx. 10.25" long with an OAL of about 17.5". I don't know anything about any Norris patent. That process has been around for (thousands?) of years. There are quite a few bladesmiths who use that process. I'm working on a project with Ray Rogers to build a daily-carry knife using a 52100/1084 san-mai blade and an integral lock that's based on his Companion 1136 model folder.

Senator, are you doing you own forging, or just stock removal? What ever it is, keep it up! I wish I could do something like that, but unfortunately my situation prohibits me from pounding my own metal. I envy you guy's that can create something from nothing. I guess my eye's will only be able to see the beauty in other peoples work.

I'm not up on all the different composites for blades, but I am learning more, and more. I do know that, if I were able to make knives, the three steels that I would use exclusively would be D2, 154CM, and BG-42. What do you think about these Senator?

Here is something you would like Senator... This is the knife that Steve Schwarzer is going to make for me... It's called Chevron Damascus, and it is gorgeous!

Sorry for the intrusion.
When San Mai is mentioned I can not help myself. San Mai is more a method or style of forgeing. There are several makers forging their own with great sucess as well as Mike Norris.
The Blade on Prarie Storm is 10 1/2".
The full specs are here, http://albums.photopoint.com/j/ViewPhoto?u=804036&a=5843086&p=25838510

Again sorry for the intrusion but San Mai is not brought that often and it is some great looking stuff.

This is a pic of Mike's San Mai Damascus. This is the Pro-Tech Duke...

Very nice. The colored handles go very well with the blade.

This is my only other San Mai for the time being so I will bore you no more.

Man, there sure are some purdy knives in thiis thread! Here's one that I've been making payments on since the Blade Show. I should receive it no later than tomorrow. Again, just another clean design. It's a Sheffield-style bowie from ABS Journeymansmith John Fitch. It has a forged 6" 1084 carbon steel blade, with mammoth ivory handles. It's approx. 11.5" in OAL.

Very nice Bo! You can keep boring us, and your not really intruding.

Hey Mike, were you keeping that from me? Is it for sale?
smile.gif
I'm going to have to reach way down to keep up with you guys.

This is A Sawby slip joint. It's a nice slim pocket knife...

Man, I am so jealous of all your guys' wonderful customs... especially those Ed Caffrey San-Mai bowies. Can I ask how much you paid for the Prairie Storm, Bo? I love the damascus pattern on that mother. I am thinking of getting a nice damascus custom for show sometime.

KentDog,
Both the San Mai pieces are posted on Ed's site. http://www.caffreyknives.com/gallery2.html
IMHO Ed is one of the best and the large bowie's really showcase the damascus.

narruc1,
That chevron damascus really looks interesting that should be a very nice one.

Chefget,
That sure is a nice pearl handled folder, I have a pearl handled coming from Gordon Bishop, a gentleman carry with BG 42 blade.
