"Dirty (insert racial epithet here!)" remarked the pot upon seeing a kettle in the neighborhood.
That's the comment that garnered me a rather substantial infraction for racism. It wasn't edited of course, but was in the Whine&Cheese forum which comes with an offensive comments disclaimer.
Now, if I'd merely used the phrase in quotations as a response to another member, or in most other contexts for that matter I'd absolutely agree that it was racist and offensive. In the context it's used there though I don't see how it could be confused for an act of racism.
The whole point in the old pot and kettle line is to show how ridiculous it is for two very similar entities to call each other names. Here, the racial epithet is used to heighten the absurdity of a pots displeasure with a kettle. So no races nor real people were actually involved and it wasn't used in a reply to any individual.
In my mind it's equivalent to being upset about a Tiger calling a microwave a term generally used as an offensive term for Asians. Ridiculous and satirical, but altogether unoffensive when read as intended.
Morrow refused to discuss it with me in PMs, but suggested I start a thread here.
