Inquiry about the Sibert162 Bushcrafter.

This Bushcrafter knife is based on Shane Sibert's Cascadia Bushcrafter. He uses S30V in his model and we wanted to keep it as close to his custom as possible. S30V has proven itself to be a great steel for knives. We did extensive testing on this model to make sure that we were offering a premium product. You can see some of our tests here:

I don't need to see any more tests, I trust BM, and you had me interested in this knife when I saw the wedge cut video. :D

I'll have my 162 next week. I can let you know how they compare.
What are you wanting to know?

Comfort over extended use, ease of slicing and woodworking, overall edge retention and performance/sharpening.

They seem to me very similar knives with very similar intended uses and design philosophies -- just wondering which one performs better.

Not a bushcrafter, but interested in getting into it.

It looks nice. BM's S30V should be fine. Also G-10 can be made to be quite grippy. My concerns would be that bird's beak and how narroe and boxy the handle gets toward the butt. Lots of carving takes place in reverse grip and depending on the hand, it might dig in. Long term in the hand use is what would make or break this design in my opinion.

The Spyderco bushcrafter is far more comfortable.
The Spyderco is much better at carving etc. because of the scandi grind.
The Spyderco is much easier to sharpen.

The edge retention goes to the Benchmade hands down.

Slicing to me is about even.

They had to quit manufactuing the Spydies beause they were all breaking. Spydies are simply nowhere near the quality of toughness of a Benchmade. Heck, go to the benchmade forum and look at the folder test. Try to find any Spydrco blade that will take that abuse, let alone a folder!

Spydie thinksthey have the bushcrafter redesigned so it won't break. Still...No thanks!!!

Here's a few pics.

Nice! I had one in the shopping cart last night and wussed out! :grumpy:

Really need more ammo right now vs a new knife...

How are your 1st impressions?

You sound foolish my friend.

The Spyderco Bushcraft is still in production, and there's no evidence of them "All breaking."

Yeah, I think BM could dominate the competition by putting similar knives through the same rigorous testing as they do theirs. Maybe the knife world is a bit more, "friendly" than the soda world.

As I recall it was only wood handles cracking on the Spydercos and I don't think anyone would call their knives crap unless its one of the old pinned cheapos.

So, I'm on the fence right now between the BM 162 and a GSO 4.1 from Survive-Gear, in M390. I don't plan on doing hard batoning, as it will mostly be a hunting knife. The thought of having a bushcrafter/hunting knife in M390 is soooo hard to resist. The price difference is a bit tough to swallow, though -- $70 more. For that I would get M390 vs S30V, and orange G10 or colored micarta handles that screw on and can be replaced/changed/removed for cleaning. Kydex sheath vs a leather sheath that I've heard folks go "meh" over. What to do, what to do?

Oh, and the GSO 4.1 is a limited run, while the 162 will (hopefully) be around a while.

So about the sheath...

Just looking at it you would think it wouldn't be very comfortable to wear. Knife rides very high without the use of a dangler, why is that not provided again? I wore the knife all day yesterday and used it for everything, kitchen tasks, opening boxes, started a fire and did some shopping around town. First thought was the knife handle was going to be digging into my side and be a really pain. That wasn't the case at all. In fact I tried to get the knife to dig into my side and couldn't. It was actually really comfortable all day and in any position. I actually love how high it rode for one reason, I could actually edc this beast with just a T-shirt on and keep it concealed. Not that I'm super worried about that but it can be done and comfortably.

As for the unconventional grip design...

If you just grab the knife and hold it tight, yep it doesn't fit the hand really well. The swell is in the front, the beak on the back is kinda big etc. But really if I thought about it yesterday I only used the knife in the grab and squeeze grip for just kitchen work. It wasn't awesome but it wasn't uncomfortable either. Where the genius in the design came in was every other grip you actuall get fatigued from. Fine work was awesome because of the front swell, choked up and the swell was in the right place. The thinner bottom leading to the oversize beak? This made it so easy to get a solid two finger purchase on the handle and the big beak kept my fingers securely on the handle without a lanyard while chopping. And that Wierd forward swell...it actually put more forward weight toward the blade to aid in chopping.

I've seen a lot of people on the net have negative things to say about the design of this knife. I'm just saying put it through its paces and have an open mind...the knife design is genius if you try to use it.

The wood handles cracked and broke and their trade mark hole had to be redesigned because the blades were breaking in two. Do some searching and you'll see what I'm talking about. It was so bad for awhile they were offering people money to purchase a different model because they pulled it off the market. I found out because I was interested in buying one and everyone was out. After about a year the facts started to leak about the blades and handles. The redesign version is out now but I'm not going to trust it until it's been tested a little better.

I ordered the Benchmade 162 earlier this week and hope to have it by the weekend.

If the spydie doesn't blow up again I may order one of those in a few months. I'm just not wanting to take a chance on it yet when there are so many proven Bushcraft blades on the market. I'll likely get a Bark River or two next to test along with this Benchmade.

I have 2 G-10 Spydercos , and they're tough as hell. When they made the G-10 run , Spyderco eliminated one of the lightening holes just behind the blade under the scales to make it stronger.

I just received my Benchmade Bushcrafter the other day. My initial doubts about the handle ergonomics are put to rest. This handle is great on this knife ( at least to me.) The forward swell worried me , but it actually enhances the normal full handed grip on the knife. Even in reverse grip , chest-lever etc . it feels fine. I really love this knife , and the sheath isn't too bad at all. I'll see how it holds up over time. No worries if it fails as I make my own sheaths anyways , but as it stands it's good to go.

This knife is one heck of a tough built unit that's going to work well for all sorts of bushcraft tasks. :)

Please, post your research findings on these Spyderco Bushcraft breaks. There was a BF thread aout one sample being broken after being batoned into a log with the assistance of a hammer...that's it, then hardly an issue with the knife.

Yeah, the only issue I saw was the wood slabs on the handle... Prefer Spyderco 'hole free' Temperance 1... I don't think holes belong on fixed blades for no purpose. /shrug/
