Is and Is not

Anybody that says they don't play with a Bali or auto is lying. For balisongs it's required.
That is simply incorrect - you forgot to consider somebody like me. I still have one bali and a handful of autos, and I don't play with them. My bali has sat on my desk for almost 14 years - I have opened it once in that time. Prior to that it was in my dresser drawer for 10 years.
My autos get carried periodically (well, most of them - 2 are LNIB). When I grab one, I open it once before pocketing it, just to be sure. (I don't carry them often, and I have a few, so each one only gets carried once or twice/year). After that initial check, it's in my pocket unless/until I choose to use it.

Beg to differ on the toy issue. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. It certainly can be a toy. People fidget them a lot, I hear. Myself included. They get used, but never cut anything. As to them being dangerous, and knife people are desensitized to that, so what? LOTS of things in life are dangerous. Cars, gasoline, lawn mowers, alcohol, food, women, you could go on and on. Point is, I bet people who kill themselves with knives is pretty low. Most normal cuts you get will heal on their own.

There is a difference between a tool and a machine.

A tool is used to do a task, a machine does a task.

The knife is a tool plain and simple no different than a hammer or screwdriver. Nothing more nothing less.

Playing with a knife does not make it a toy, it makes it a tool you are using for a purpose it’s not intended for. That’s no different than banging a monkey wrench on a trash can, you aren’t playing the drums you are just screwing around.

Yes we are knife guys and gals, we are fascinated and passionate about a tool. That doesn’t make into something else.

Google simple machine. A wedge is a simple machine. A knife is a wedge. A knife is a simple machine.

Your definition is closer to a complex machine.
I did. Perhaps you should as well. A wedge is a tool not a machine.

An inclined plane is a simple machine. A knife blade is 2 inclined planes that meet at the edge also known as a wedge. Which is another simple machine.

A knife is definitely a machine. A machine doesn’t need to have moving parts or an energy source.

I agree it’s not a toy. People overuse the word toy. It is also not a trinket or jewelry.

A machine is a physical system that uses power to apply forces and control movement to perform an action.

I conveniently lifted that definition from Wikipedia to avoid having to formulate my own tortured version.

A knife is not a machine. It is an object with specific properties, such as a sharp edge of a certain length and geometry, that can be made part of or used in a machine if so desirable.

A knife is a tool, inanimate by itself, to be operated by a user (or incorporated into a machine) to seperate material, which is generally called "cutting." In other uses, a knife may be optimized in its geometry to facilitate stabbing, often with the intention to cause physical harm to a person of dislike or enmity.

The above, after the wiki quote, I just wrote up on the go, so who really knows what a knife is? BJ Clinton or that JW Bobbitt guy?

You have more self control than i.

No longer functions as a knife it is no longer a knife.

No it would be a handle or a housing or a frame. Lol.

It is all just semantics. Like most issues I can see both sides. It can be frustrating. Lol.
Never thought of it like that

While everyone is welcome to their own opinions, only my opinion is the correct one. That being said, I mostly agree with the OP.

What a knife is tends to be a very subjective question. Here is my interpretation.

I've carried a knife since I was a boy. It started life as an SAK, a tool. It has become far more. Besides being a useful tool that I use pretty much daily, the advent of quick one hand opening and closing knives was a Godsend for my mental health. The action and sound of my knife opening and closing relaxes me. Suffering from anxiety, ADHD, and something similar to bipolar, the calming effect helps keep me off of a lot of medication.

A pocket knife has never been a weapon to me. I carry a gun for that purpose.

They also serve as functional art. My Tasca 2 puts a smile on my face every time I look at it and especially open it. Odin's eye damasteel is something else. It was a cool process to pick out the blade steel and handles.
i feel you!!
I'm constantly opening and closing certain knives i have.
