Is Busse the new Randall?

It's a case of thin edge vs. thin edge. Doesn't take much, honestly. All I know is I cringe at the idea, for instance, of taking a knife and chopping directly into the raised rim of a steel can.

An exaggerated example: A shovel has a lower RC hardness than a knife. But chopping into the edge of a shovel with a knife is going to damage that edge. Perhaps quite badly, even.

Indeed, this is all just a bunch of opinions on the internet, so anything said by anyone has to be taken with an enormous rock crystal of salt. But out of curiosity, you say you tried replicating the results for 8 consecutive hours. How did you perform the testing? :)

Pretty well, I lost the cutting edge but I went thru lots of knots. "not damage on the edge visible to the naked eye "

Yeah, the Dude had this experience with a Busse, quiet a coincidence:rolleyes:

If one of us is lying, it's YOU.
Anybody with the money can buy them. And I bought two. Back when they were "cheap" by comparison to today's prices seen for Busse's.
I read all the hype, and believed it. So, I bought them.
I don't hate them. I just don't think they are worth the money, or anything near as "special" as the fan-boys try to imply. And I have owned them and used them, so my words have meaning.
The edges can dent easily. The knives are not invincible.
And yes, it really did dent just like that, and yes I'm telling the truth, and no I'm not sorry to have said it because it needed to be said.
And I won't buy any more, because my previous experience with them showed me that I'd could have my needs met at a lower price, and be less financially and emotionally devastated when the edge dents.

Devil's advocate:D
I baton thru the beer can and the tomato can No damage, I had more friction stopping power with unknown Wood Knots:D

Batoning and falling/chopping impact are totally different things. Hence the old trick of batoning through a nail without damaging the edge. Try chopping a nail, though, and see where it gets ya'. ;)

Randalls have been carried all over hell's creation during WW2, through Korea, through Vietnam, into Orbit...

Busses get carried into the backyard to film destruction tests. ;)

I do not think that Busse is the new Randall, at least not at this point in time. Busses are popular with the Bladeforums crowd, sure, but I do not get the feeling that they have a very significant following among normal, non-'knife nut' type folk.

Nor do Randall....

It's a bit silly trying to compare one brand to the other. In my view they are quite different so as usuall it comes down to personal preference. Most people will make their minds up along these general lines

1. I like both
or
2. I like one over the other because....(insert your own reasoning)

As for me, I like one over the other :)

To the OP......
Not sure if Busse is trying or wants to be the new Randall  but I am sure that a lot of the Busse knives that are already out there will out last all of us so does that mean they will be the new Randall (what ever that means)

Absolutely true, and I can see where, for the guys that don't use their knives yet need the latest wondersteel, that could be a problem. Good point.

Come on....

I have lost count of how many Randals have been advertised for sale with the quote "Knife has never been sheathed"

Every maker has it's safe queen collectors and hard users.

Yeah, I may try that one day;)

You what feels worse than accidentally hitting a nail when chopping wood? Hitting overgrown wire fence with a scythe blade. If that sensation doesn't make a knife knut's hair stand on end I don't know what will!

C' On now, Noss did beat the crap out of it on concrete, pipe steel and I didn't see all those dent that we're talking about here...And he did this with 3 or 4 different Busse knives.

You need to back up your statement, or you post will dent:D

Nah, that's just code for something else - kinda like toe tapping in a public bathroom stall... ;)

FortyTwoBlades, don't you understand what you've done!!! You have dared to question the almighty invincibility of that god of knifedom known as BUSSE!!! Busse owners would find it less offensive if you questioned their sexuality, the honor of their mothers, or their patriotism.

What were you thinking.

I fear for your safety my friend. I imagine a black van loaded with "Busse boys" just waiting to grab you and take you away for "re-education".

Stay safe brother. Watch your back.

:D

That's ok. I've got machetes stuffed in every nook and cranny of the house. My s*** is secured! :D

Seriously, though, I mean no disrespect--I just call it as I see it. I'm far from infallible so take my word for what it is--Busse makes a mighty fine knife that is clearly worth the money to a lot of fine people. They just aren't worth it for me. Something tells me our good man Jerry isn't going to lose any sleep over that, either.
