Is collecting knives weird?

Just ask her why she has that collection of knives in the kitchen draw.

I mean knives are used everyday by a wide range of people. They just happen to be for different reasons but I think people sometimes forget that its a knife that's cutting their steaks and not a spoon.

If you tell your mom that you are converting a knife into a weapon, I could see why she might be concerned. But I don't know if you told her any such thing.

Perhaps she's like most of the people in this country and she sees knives as weapons. As a result she may be concerned with what she sees as your obsession with weapons. I don't know what you've told her so far about your interest in knives, what you want them for, etc, but moms are rarely accepting of their child having any interest in WEAPONS.

If it's not too late try to convince her that you're interested in knives for a different reason- their infinite usefulness as tools, their infinite variety, their interesting mechanics, etc, and if she's receptive to hearing about your hobby, show her the differences in various locking mechanisms and explain the different and useful properties of different steels. Show her that you appreciate them as tools.

Show Mom this pic, which is only a fraction of my hoard, and tell her that I turned out somewhat ok. I've practiced law for 21 years, married for 20 years to the same Mrs. Powernoodle, have 2 kids in a Latin school making straight A's, and only rarely do I hack up the corpse of a hitchhiker and stuff the remains in my freezer.

That pic is like knife-orgy porn. Love it. :D

That sounds like a good way to have her stop listening and cut you off halfway through and say something along the lines of "Anyway, as I was saying: you're not allowed to have weapons in the house.", which is pretty much what my mom does.

Send half of them to me (random, no choosing), I'd be happy :p. Sorry, can't help it, am so jealous:)

Compared to the general population our hobby is weird as tits on a boar, that being said the general population also votes for romney and obama thinking their vote will change anything, the general public also doesnt question anything and blindly believe the media so anyone thinking that knives are only to be used for killing can justify it by saying "It looks like a weapon" or "That guy did it",what they dont understand is ANYTHING can be used a weapon, you could beat a guy to death with a newspaper if you really wanted to,so....I think as long as you dont hurt anyone with your hobby anything is fine, when someone suffers in one way or another then your hobby becomes a problem. My parents were/are cool with me and my obsession because they know I'd never use it unless in defense and besides that they know my weapons collection will be there if anything happens from burglary to SHTF/WROL,same with all my friends, some might not like it but they damn well respect it because it can come in handy.

Whether it is "weird" or not depends on the person IMO. A lot of my friends know I'm into knives and none of them ever thought it was weird or felt threatened. I had a buddy who was really into firearms, but the guy gets REALLY emotional and was even suicidal at one point when his girlfriend broke up with him. People like that would make me worry.

Collecting knives is no weirder than collecting other small durable precision artifacts like watches, flashlights, digital gizmos, etc.

Weird is collecting coprolites, half-eaten sandwiches, or cigar butts.

Similar story with me,Im the most athletic with years of combat sports training (wrestling, boxing,MMA) and with an explosive temper, yet i never get into fights,I have 2 friends that cant be trusted with weapons, ever,SHTF or not, they're friends but total idiots when it comes to respect for weapons and where to point/what not to chop and in what proximity others are when they are chopping.

Yes collecting knives is weird, and I am worried about you. I can help you though. Just send me all of your knives and you will be all better. :D

It is not that wierd if u know what u doing u can even make money in the end, unless u are on very cheap site. But cutting your knives or modifying them in anyway is not very smart for any collection so decide what u want to cut :)

I thought collecting knives are cool that's why I started a small collection. Just a few I like to put in my EDC rotation. I've got friends that collect firearms and they are well educated and must well off to afford an expensive hobby :D.

First of all, parents are always worried about their kids, no matter whether they are 15 or 30, 'being worried' is like saying 'I care about you a lot'. But most importantly you're majoring in Criminal Justice and you know the difference between wrong and right, because your mum told you so since you were a child. As long as you're not talking to your machete, sitting in your mum's living room in the dark, about the other 'evil-doers', you're going to be fine, I guess.

I pulled out a slip joint, with about a 3" main blade and cut open a bag of ice an older lady was trying to open. Her eyes got big and she exclaimed, "That's a lethal knife!" Funny thing was within an arm's length was a rack of over a dozen kitchen knives. All with much longer and pointy blades. Didn't bother her a bit, but my little knife was "lethal" just because I had it in my pocket. So, yeah a lot of people think we're weird just to have a knife and I suppose they go around whispering to each other, about how we carry lethal knives and might just go off and start slicing up innocent folks at any second!

I wouldn't expect any other types of responses from this form. thanks guys... and girls

Ha, I get the same sort of response from my mother. Shes like, "whats wrong with you? why do you collect WEAPONS out of all things? you know.. this isnt 'normal.'"

And I go on trying to explain what determines a weapon is the person holding it and yadi yada... we've had this talk many a times. Oh and I'm 24 years old! Maybe its about time I move out...

Ask her if she ever watched one of those reality shows like Hoarders or American Pickers...those people are weird!

Collecting anything is weird IMO. I was up about 12 softball bats when I realized it was time start cutting back. I'm still around 7 or 8 but most have depreciated to a point where there's no point in selling them. I haven't gone too crazy with the knives though, I think 5 folders and 2 fixed blades. I've been buying about 1 or 2 a year, although I'm spending a lot more money each time. :)

while visiting me last year for the holidays, my mom (whom I have taken to the range and taught to shoot, and has seen a lot of my knives) made a comment while I was getting ready to leave for work about taking a "weapon" with me (just a little Ka-bar heavy bowie at the waist). I pointed out - again - that my knife is a tool and left.

2 days later she asked me for a machete to cut off some branches from a tree at the front of the house (she's very active with housekeeping). I handed her the same heavy bowie.

She took it with her when she left... she liked it so much and was so amazed at the ease with which she cut off the branches that I gave it to her when she went back to her house. When I go home for the holidays I sharpen it for her.

Remember - better than arguing - educate them.

Yep, it is on the strange (bizarre) side of the tracks. When you start getting multiple items of the same general tool (that you don't really need) and you put them in drawers or tool boxes or you hide them in other odd places...you might have the bug. If you have forgotten where you've stored them or how much you paid for them...you've probably collected for too long a period. When you find yourself rationalizing about yet another knife purchase...you have a problem.

Basically when the addiction begins to control (hamper, modify and complicate) your daily life...you have an issue. If you are stone-cold broke and eating noodles while your heavy bevy of Busse knives winks at you...you are in a precarious position!
