To the OP I'd say: collecting knives is like any other hobby. Some people don't understand why you'd collect coins, etc. To each his own.

although I had to google coprolites

Seriously?! You collect & use fine "grey turds", and you didn't know what a coprolite is? That's hilarious. :p :D

For those who aren't aware, a coprolite is petrified dinosaur feces. I have several in my rock & mineral collection.

Yup. And I enjoy every minute of it too. I remember handing a pretty one to my sister's friend when I was younger, and when she asked what it was & I told her, she screeched, dropped it, and ran into the kitchen to wash her hands. My dad laughed 'til he cried over that one. :D

Not really. I used to collect air sickness:barf: bags from various air lines before I collected knives. Don't worry, I only collected the ones that were new and unused.

The funniest one was from TWA (TransWorld Airlines). On one side it had a cribbage or gin-rummy score sheet, the other side had the address of a film processing company (all you had to do is put your film in the bag, seal it, add postage and put it in the mail box. The directions for using the air sick bag were on the bottom.

Just show your mom this I.N.F.K. and she may look at your knife collecting in a whole new light! :)

Glad to see you moved away from The Dark Side Ric! ;)

I don't think collecting knives is weird, but most knife nuts don't.

However.... I do think people that edc an assortment of knives and flashlights are pretty weird.

I don't think knife collecting is strange at all. People collect everything under the sun and most things offer far less utility than a knife. BTW, about a year ago I bought my wife a pink SAK and attached it to her keychain. Not only does the blade stay dull from use, but the pink color also helps her to keep up with her keys.

Show Mom this pic, which is only a fraction of my hoard, and tell her that I turned out somewhat ok. I've practiced law for 21 years, married for 20 years to the same Mrs. Powernoodle, have 2 kids in a Latin school making straight A's, and only rarely do I hack up the corpse of a hitchhiker and stuff the remains in my freezer.

Collecting knives is not weird. Hanging out with and having casual conversations with your knife collection is weird.

Collecting knives is no stranger than collecting anything else. It's good to have a hobby. I have what I think is a pretty big collection, but I carry pretty much the same 10 knives in no particular rotation. I also only carry one knife on my person so I'm not the guy who has a shit ton of blades on him at any given time. Everyone that knows me knows that I carry a pocket knife and that I collect knives, but only a very few of those people really see the sickness because they've showed interest and wanted to talk knives and see my collection. I don't talk about how much my knives cost or what materials they're made from unless someone is asking me about the one in my pocket at the time. Sometimes they ask to see it, sometimes they ask how much the knife cost... That's when they think I'm weird or crazy. I can tell someone that I have a collection of a 100 or so knives and they'll just give me a little eyebrow raise and a "wow". If I tell that same person that the pocket knife that they are now holding in their hand goes for about $600 then they give me the bewildered "you're insane!!" look and hand the knife back to me. Lots of head shakes. You either get it or you don't.

I can't wrap my head around stamp collecting, but I wouldn't call it weird.

The best chicks are found sitting in church pews. Seriously. Get yourself a godly, low maintenance woman and everything else falls into place. But thats for another thread.

bah of course not! but we're biased. I'm in a similar position. my parents are and have always been very concerned with the things I own reflecting any sort of morbidity, violent potential, or general unpleasantness. example; when I was younger I wasn't allowed to own anything with a skull on it, I also wasn't allowed to have toy guns or play FPS video games.
so naturally they hate that I am now a firearm owner, and knife enthusiast (also ironically my fave art style is Dia de los muertos). but while they grief me about it they still know I am a balanced individual, and I am slowly winning them over with some of the customization work I do on them, my mother will show them off to family every now and then and my father asked me to make a customized knife for him as well.
try showing the potential beauty or usefulness to them
