Is the 9 still the King?

In my opinion the 9 is still the king barring the BK20 going into normal production. The 21 is too large to be a knife but has transformed into a machete-sized blade and is thus DQ'd from the heirarchy of Becker knives. Until someone can go out at any time and purchase the 20 alone, I don't think it should be considered king.

It hasn't earned that honor yet, we need Beckerheads going around saying 'you can't not have a 20' before it usurps the 9 as king.

Ah but its a possibility now that you can not have a 9 if you have a 20 which nullifies the phrase "you cant not have a 9".. Possibility, not proven yet. Im sure most people would stay loyal to their 9 no matter what, especially those who cant get the 20

The 9 will always have pros over the 20, specifically the weight and length and ease of use for smaller tasks.

You can't not have a 9.

But honestly who will be carrying a bk20 who doesnt have a pocketknife or smaller blade to do finer work? And i predict the 20 will excel past the 9 on larger tasks.. And it will get the small tasks done with just a tiny bit more effort than the 9.. I think it will do much better. We will see when i actually get enough free time to test this knife thoroughly though

And if youre gonna carry a 9, seriously whats the extra couple inches and little bit of weight. If youre carrying that much weight a little more wont hurt that much

The 9 is primarily a large knife that can do small knife tasks reasonably well. The 20 appears to be a better large knife, but not as good of a small knife.
Personally I like a bigger chopper, a medium belt knife, and a back up small blade so for me, I suspect the 20 would beat the 9 for my needs.
Realistically it will be 6 months to a year before anyone can fairly say if the 20 beats the 9. How it looks, and a days worth of playing in the woods doesnt a King make...
Either way, it looks like a hellova knife, and I want one.

When I think about what I am gonna carry, I try to figure out what I expect I will have to do and how far I am gonna have to hoof it...... If I am at Becker West I have to move my kit less than a hundred yards from the truck....So, I can take the twenty inch skillet and the two gallon coffee pot and as many blades as I want to practice/play with....... If I am going a distance by shanks mare I gotta think things through by the expected tasks, weight bulk, etc. .... I will have a SAK Rucksack, a BK11 with MacIntyre add ons and a BK16..... After that it is what is going to be most efficient given weight/bulk distance trade offs....... I have had a year to play with the BK20 and in my right hand it performs big knife tasks most efficiently and has a bit more reach if you are dealing with berry canes, poison ivy and other dammit vines.....It is a better swamp/jungle blade....... It chops more efficiently.....It is larger.... It is longer...... I am not throwing away my BK9s.....

Ethan

There it is. Thanks Boss!

Oh hey, Ethan.. What are you doing with that dirty old proto of the 20? I would be glad to dispose of one for you ...lol

This pic might help. Take a close look at the waist of all three. The 9 has the biggest making it the lesser of the three for detail work. You need as skinny of a waist as possible to do the small stuff.

If you ever do throw any blades away, you can toss 'em in my garbage can.

There's more to it than that. In my experience the weight of the blade and how far away from the handle that weight is has a pretty big effect on how easy it is to carve with a blade. Making a tent stake with a BK9 is easier than with the BK21.

Ya, out of the group here I take the big waist 9 for small work and I like the edge closer to the handle than the small waisted 21 for small work . Oh ya, sorry for chiming in , the 20 has me going crazy .

Not really. I've used all three, and I have to say the 9 does not carve as well as the other two. The 20, & 21 have outstanding balance. Their balance points are exactly where you carve making it effortless. I've got a vid coming that explains it.

The 21 can be choked up on way better than the 9. It carves like a dream.

Guys my point is this, Ethan will keep designing new and better knives. It's evolution. It's a good thing, and not the end of the world. [emoji106][emoji3]

I disagree but I guess it's subjective. Of course, I much prefer my Magua or my Mora for small work. One of the Neckers or the 16 is pretty good too.

I like new knives, I'm waiting for my 20 to come in. I just have doubts that the 20 will dethrone the 9. But it also depends on why someone thinks the 9 is king in the first place.
