Is the 9 still the King?

"Are we not King's men?", Capt. Barbosa.

I doubt the 20 will be as fast in the hand as the 9, or as plentiful, or as affordable (especially right now, but maybe ever).

"Besides, our nearness to the King in love,
is near the hate of those love not the King.", William Shakespeare.

When thou sitteth to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee: and put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.
Proverb 23: verses 1 & 2. {King James Version}

A king that sitteth in the throne of judgement scattereth away all evil with his eyes.
Proverb 20: verse 8. {King James Version}

This pic might help. Take a close look at the waist of all three. The 9 has the biggest making it the lesser of the three for detail work. You need as skinny of a waist as possible to do the small stuff.

Not really: The BK-21 would be poor. Thickness behind the edge matters far more. If the Bk-20 is as thin edged as the 9, then I would agree it is better.

Actually, the 21 has the same geometry as the 9. The 20 has an even more acute geometry than the 9. So, they're both better for carving.

You missed my point , I have a 21 and 9 a 20 on the way . A person can make do with them all if they have too . Small work large work in between work . I guess I'am weaker then you cause I would still choose the 9 out of the three just cause it's lighter for SMALL work even though she has the larger waist . I also hope to sh- t Mr. Ethan keep's designing new and better blades ! Now for chopping I can't wait for the 20 and see if I like it better than the 21 .

Oh ya , CM congrats on the try stick comp .
Please don't tell me you used the 21 ?

Take it easy, man. I'm just trying to say these big knives have outstanding balance that takes the weight really well. If the 21 is just too heavy for you that's okay. I'm not chastising you for that.

And you still won , that is AWSOME !

Yeah. Just getting a little tired of trying to help people understand real answers to their questions, from my own real world experience, and it just turns into arguments, and insults. If that's how you want to take things, that's fine I guess. Just know I'm not the bad guy, here. Just a guy that uses his knives, and can give sound advice. Enjoy yourself, sir.

I never ever thought I'd hear anyone from this forum say this! Lol

Strictly my opinion. :)

Whoa!
Can you expound? While I've never met you, based on my reading, you seem to have a similar viewpoint on blades to my own, and I value your opinion.
So what makes you like the bk20 that much more than the 9?

You're far too kind! I like the 20 better simply because it's faster and cuts better, it "feels" lighter and more nimble even though it's longer, and it's pointier. That's not really a "dig" against the 9... the 9 does exactly what I think it was meant to do, which is to be essentially Marine-proof.

It's sort of like comparing a muscle car to a farm truck. They're both awesome and have plenty horsepower, they're just set up different.

IF you break a 20 :eek: :mad: and no more 20. If you break a 9, the king is dead... Long live the new king! Get another one! :thumbup:

If you break either a 9 or a 20, chances are very good that you did something very wrong :D

The 9 can still be the king. It's just a name. Regarding the 20, I was gonna call it the Bitch, but when I got mine the first thing I thought was what a Beastie of a blade it is.

So mine is "The Beast".

The 20 is a lot lighter than I expected it to be. If it were a regular production item it could be very close. I plan on heading up and trying it out against the 9 and 21.

I think the mostly FFG grind really reduces the weight, I'm impressed. I've been using a 9 for 2 years, but this 20 might bump it from my belt for camp trips. We'll see.

Your picture has gotten me to thinking, what about a BK18 (90% scale BK20)? Now that could threaten the throne of the 9.

The king shall retain the throne. The 20 is one run, and done. I've given up.

The 20 should be called "Queen Bee". I've never seen a BK generate so much buzz in such a short time.
