Is the spyderco Military worth the price tag?

I don't have one at this point but the future is wide open. From all the reviews and comments I've read, it really seems to have the "stuff" with regard to quality, design and materials. My only reluctance is the size. Its a BIG HONKIN' folding knife. At the risk of plagerism from the Rickster (BF Gold member), he sent me this picture on request because we both like the Military and both have Sebenzas as a frame of reference.

Yes, that is a Large Seb. I dig the look of the Mil, but I think a Ti Sage would be more useful to me than this beast. Maybe in the future.

I have 5 Militarys with the M4/Ti/G10 on order! Plan on at least 7-9 before I am done getting them.

Same here except I currently have 4. Today I'm carrying my black/black S30V. My absolute favorite knife out of all the Spydies, RATs, EKI's, Kershaws, HIs, Bokers and Opinels that I own though, is my BG-42 Military. For me the Military platform is the best there is and well worth the money.

Ti Military has the best frame-lock I've ever seen. I was surprised to see how it's fitted so the lock fits over the blade tang.

from what i have herd knifeworks is going to put a 1 knife limit on each person since a lot of people want it. also roger dosn't want people to buy a bunch of them and then flip them right after they get them.

i don't know how true this is but this is what i have herd.

i'm on the list for the M4/Ti/g10 milly cant wait

100 absolutely i love my orange military its near perfect excellent handle excellent blade just a beauty

I just looked at the picture of the left handed Mili. Damned if it doesn't have a straight clip. The right handed version has a curved clip. I can get straight clips at the Dollar Store!

Nice knife, big handle for my 2xl mitts, but the tip was the only one to every break on me (not that I usually pry with a good knife). Very slow to open, I'd sooner take a BM or a CS knife before a spyderco, but thats just me. I've owned dozens of spydee's over the years, then switched to BM and certain Cold Steels have my attention (Carbon V, I just bought a Master Twister original, excellent!)

It's not fast, but it's strong and light. Easy to carry. Top quality. Big blade. Pointy, flat grind. Available in awesome steels. Excellent liner lock. Great ergos. Backed by great company. Not too expensive.

Yes, it's worth it.

Pros -
-The price is reasonable.
-The blade shape makes for a good slicer.
-Lots of options
-It's large

Cons
- Tip-down only! Even the "Spydie drop" is slow, and otherwise, it's still a really really slow knife to deploy imo. Tip up option would be invaluable, and would make the knife WAY more marketable. Every company should do this, it's a no-brainer.
- I don't trust the tip for much hard use for a knife billed as a tactical/hard use knife
- It's large ;)

I can see why people like them, but it wasn't for me.

You each need to go to Blade, meet Sal Glesser and tell him that. When he gets done laughing, he can show you just how fast he can make an open Military appear. :D

As for the tip, one of the S90V Millies in my picture routinely gets used for drywall repairs and general demolition work. The most I've ever broken off the tip was a third of the width of the edge bevel when I hit a tempered drywall screw. It's a cutting tool, not a crowbar. Use it for one and the tip is fine.

What dollar store carries knife clips?

an m4 ti/g10 millie huh? wow, I sure am behind these days! Whats the edd?

It's a Knifeworks special (limited run) due around May 2010. There was a signup period, but it appears they've got plenty of people already signed up. The sign up page is long gone.

Ti framelock with a black G10 slab on the other side. Uncoated plain edge M4 blade. IIRC.

it's not hype. i have a black one myself. i have to say it suits EVERY TASK. i wanna get the camo g10 one now =)

Another tip up Military carry idea. I have successfully mounted many clips on plastic handles by putting stainless steel helicoils in them. The sizes involved are #2-56 and the metric size 2.5X.45. You would probably end up with a staight clip on a curved handle because the Mili clip curves the wrong way (unless you are left handed). The holes in most clips are too small for the metric size. To avoid the hassle of enlarging holes in hardened steel, go with the #2-56 helicoil kit.

Thanks for the info.

With the release of the new Salbenza at circa 215-230 price levels, I'd say it's well worth it. The standard production Mil at circa 100-125 street price is also well worth it. But the titanium scaled Salbenza is a STEAL. Look there young man, look there. SKU is C36TIP. Get some. Cheers.

That's how I feel too, they would have to completely change the blade profile and get rid of or change the hole. But then I feel the same way about their whole line, they would have to make some major changes to get me to buy any of them.

Different strokes I guess. :)

I do like the Sharpmaker though and they have some nice stones. :D

Zombie thread revival! But it made me read this and get a laugh :D

In case anyone is interested; it is well worth the money ;)

I have three of them. One is an old two-hole clip bought in 93 when they first came out. The other two were bought new last year, a satin leftie and an all black rightie.
So yes, to me it is probably the best all around useful knife model I own, and I carry two every day. The older one is my beater knife. Most especially, after god knows how many sharpenings, none on anything more abrasive than ultra fine diamond, the blade shape is still exactly like the two newer ones.

This is the older 1993 version.

Clip has been blackened with heat shrink tubing as the original clip was shiny.

lol good catch. Just goes to show the Military can win over even the biggest doubter.

When it comes time to work hard, you can bet your ass I have the Military in my pocket.

Yeah, I also remember when Ankerson didn't like the Military at all. He didn't like the thin tip that the great amount of distal taper produced, and I'm pretty sure he had broken a tip on one.

We're teaching him well though, as its now one of his favorite knives:p

Just giving you hard time for kicks Jim :D

HAHA! That is funny. I wonder if some day I will be seen in a zombie thread saying I will never own [insert knife or brand here] and end up being one of the biggest proponents of said brand. My Guess is... Probably.
