Is there a difference between "survival" and "survivalist" training?

If gold goes to $10,000 an ounce in hyperinflation, I'm selling it!

And you will have 10,000 in cash that hyperinflates tomorrow to be worthless. If someone is truly worried that hyperinflation is coming, take the money you would invest in gold and put it in long-tern food, gardens, and other items that are tangible and are YOURS at this moment.

I need a plow.

It could happen, but if I have food and I need something you have, then gold is not going to be worth a shit as a barter tool. You can't eat, shoot, drink or screw gold.

That is absolutely true but there is a whole class of people that really think they can eat it. :D

I'm just saying, a few ounces wouldn't hurt to have in the safe or in the various kits, etc.

This whole gold as a survival tool BS started back in the 70s. Gold, to me, is only good if the economy doesn't collapse.

I don't think we can lay the blame on the 1970s although that was the modern time that you can point to when this concept gained popularity. It is true that people have been using precious metals...and jewels, for barter in survival situations, etc., for hundreds and hundreds of years. I think the main problem is that like when a country/government decides that it is going to prepare for the future wars by examining everything that just happened in the last conflict, "fighting the last war," people examine past survival situations and think they will automatically be able to pull off the same stuff that has been done in the past or the same opportunities will present themselves in such a way that a person can exploit them.

There was a time when a British Gold Sovereign or a Swiss Franc could buy your way to safety from the Nazis...but there is no guarantee that this sort of thing will ever work in some type of future conflict, etc.

Oh, I have no problem with having some gold. It rounds you out just like any good survivalist should do with their skills, etc. I am saying that most economies that have traded in gold were already somewhat settled. The initial looting and mayhem is what I'm more worried about. After some sanity returns then the gold is a good medium of exchange.

Well at least I stocked up on weapons and ammo first. I am not a farmer. Maybe I could grow potatoes or something. Hey, my neighbor has a garden. Glad he is my friend.

Another good investment besides education would be land.....Use that land to grow your own foods and learn to raise animals......

That's kind of what I think of money in general--it has NO value except what you turn it INTO. You should keep enough money around to turn into goods and services you don't expect, and to plan for the future of course (like retirement), but once you have that covered I'd think it most logical to turn that excess into useful STUFF or used to acquire new SKILLS.

I have three acres. So when is RAT coming out with the survival plow? What's a mule going for now? What do I feed him anyway, RAT Survival Mule Chow? How about goats? God, I hate all this survival planning.

mmmmmmm.....curbrito

I try to keep my garden skills up by planting a big garden every year and canning a lot of food. I don't go to the grocery store that much. I'm also a realist and I realize that if the SHTF, not even those who grow a garden will be safe from intrusion and take over. The gray man will win this game, I think.

If Gold is such a killer, sure-thing investment then why are all these people making commercials on TV trying to sell what such a great investment? Maybe they should just invest in their own product in quit trying to sell such a great secret, eh?

I used to work across the street from a pawn shop in the ghetto. I think I have a reply for this. If you're refering to "cash4gold" and the like... I'm willing to bet it has to do with stolen goods. Even though stealing and scraping wiring and plumbing from vacant houses is more profitable these days, there's still a good market of stolen gold floating around.

opps read that wrong. yea, I agree if SHTF gold is worthless. But as horn dog said, It's a good defense against hyper inflation, as long as the econ doesnt collapse. At that point, I don't think there will be a lot of trade going on. Most transactions will probably involve 'population thinning'. Once that settles down, then is the time to get off the MRE's and start planting. I don't keep too much of a food stockpile, because I imagine I'd have to be mobile as conditions change. I'm not close enough to open spaces to ride it out. Guessing my best bet would be to head as deep into canada as I could get. Bonus is they're not very well armed up there.

But Knowing how makes you usefull to others that don't know how....that's always a bonus

Jeff, what you just wrote is scary but TRUE.

And your previous post on Fractional Reserve Banking is "right on the money", LOL.

It will be barter for "goods AND services". Your skills (survival, etc.) will be highly marketable when it is all said and done. Anyone who can make flint and steel kits, teach others to plant and harvest, etc., those who are learning now will be in o.k. shape, more or less. :)

In the end all we have is each other and God, that's about it, and I think things will be even nastier then what we can possibly image, although I think you have a good handle on how bad it will get since you have traveled quite a bit, it is already bad in other countries.

Three acres and a mule?

The standard used to be forty acres and a mule.

I can’t figure it out. Does this count as inflation or deflation?
