Is There an Ultimate Slipjoint Storage Solution

I use a combination of plastic tool boxes with multiple drawers, cigar boxes, and other wooden boxes - and I still have a tendency to leave them all around the house! There's currently half a dozen on my kitchen table, a dozen on the coffee table, and three on my computer stand! :D

I use hinged shadow boxes similar to the ones pictured above. Currently have 11 such shadow boxes that house my knife collection... They protect AND display all in one :-)

As for ultimate method, I guess it depends on ones own personal needs & wants. For me, it's not just owning them, but also enjoying their view at all times within my home by displaying them. The glass topped displays do a reasonable job of protecting them from dust, and my home's constantly controlled temperature and humidity, pretty much does the rest to protect them. Obviously, this is not an idea for everyone... but it surely does all I need it to do :-)

Out of my 11 displays, only this Schatt & Morgan/Queen walnut display case is purposely built to display knives. All the others are simply generic shadow boxes.

This generic shadow box only cost me around 15 bucks, so careful shopping will have you scoring them pretty cheaply :-)

Then there is the creativeness that a shadow box allows you to experiment with, letting you design one of a kind displays...

USA or International? I prefer the originals, but you can buy a forged bowie at those prices. Needless to say I am having trouble pulling the trigger.

I had both, and when I first bought the International chest it was comparable in quality and materials to the Original, but now they've gone to veneers on the International line.

I actually bid $2500.00 on this item on Ebay several years ago, but was outbid.

It would have been nice.

These have got to be few and far between.

I noticed that. Both lines give me pause. The USA line is very pricey, but the quality seems to be lacking with the Internationals. I'm thinking of getting a do-it-yourself kit from the USA line. Solid oak instead of plywood and veneers. I'd have to build it myself, but at least I can make sure the workmanship will be good. And it'll cost roughly the same as an International.

Bought one of these on sale at a local hardware store for $20 and it sits on my tall dresser. Works well, imo, but doesn't look too fancy. The drawers all come right out which is handy for organising/rearranging the collection and I like the larger drawers for holding accessories.

I use various versions of this set up, why have them if I can't look at them!

Although I do use this to show different scale choices:

Up to now my solution has been fairly simple and straightforward. I keep the majority of my less-used collection in a large Spyderco knife roll hanging in the closet of my man-cave. Favorites are stored as shown below on an Ikea bookshelf/credenza that also houses part of my vinyl record collection.

I'd like to find some of those shadow boxes that Jimmy mentioned above. I could do a lot with those.

Man-o-man, that is really something

I hope to one day get a Gerstner chest. Seems like a classy way to keep your treasures.

I looked at the Gerstner's long and hard, but ended up with this one from Harbor Freight on sale. I would not want to move it around a LOT, but for a dresser setter, it works well, especially for the money. I have also picked up a couple of Craftsman (Kennedy) Machinists boxes along the way that work well in the shop or for the collection when I need the space.

This is basically the exact same setup I'm currently using for my actual edc blades only I lined the little drawers with some felt cut to size. My safe queens sit in my safe in their boxes. :)

That is exactly what I am planning. If you don't mind sharing, what is the largest folder in that 1300 case? I was looking at a 1200, but wasn't sure it would hold a Madison bowie or other large slipjoint. Thanks in advance.

I've had two Madisons and they fit fine. The biggest now is a non-traditional. Biggest traditional is a GEC 54 Furtaker.

Craftsman 3 drawer Intermediate chest.
Pocket knives in the skinniest top drawer, fixed blades in the middle & sheaths/boxes in the big bottom drawer..perfection.

Shame to have them hidden away - I have most of mine in a custom made Glass Topped Coffee Table - stops people in their tracks when they see it.

1) Some of y'all have a LOT of knives. Wow. I'm a little envious.

2) Some of the storage/display chests above are really cool! The Gerstner stuff makes me drool

I only have half a dozen slippies, plus one modern folder, and they all live in a Sack-Ups knife roll that hangs in my closet. I go in in the morning, pick my clothes, pick my knife (they're all users), and walk out ready for the day.

addylo, if you are interested in seeking out some shadow boxes at great prices, check out one of your local "homegoods" type stores. You know the type, the kind of stores that sell brand name clothes, furniture, and other "homegoods" for less :) This one cost me about $17, and it's pretty classy looking :)

This one cost me $13 at the same place... so one can see that this method can not only be made to work and look good, but can be pretty darned cheap. Guests in your home will not see them as inexpensive items, but you'll know (as well as your wallet) ;)

This one cost me $15... and though it's currently unopened, it will give me the excuse to buy more knives to fill her up! ;)

I've been thinking about a Gerstner a lot, but only the USA line (I've heard too many bad things about the international line). The thing that keeps holding me back is that I know I can get one or more custom slipjoints for what I would spend on the chest.

Hahaha.... as a matter of fact, I am divorced and am currently single! :) Thing is, even when married, my ex and I shared our space equally, so we blended her likes with mine within the same space. The marriage may have failed, but it surely was not because of our interior decor sharing.

Now that I am single and all (9 years), it's great to just make my place represent my interests and decor ideas... I love not having to base my interior designing with anybody else. It may have been okay with blending when married, but I much prefer the space being all mine and not having to deal with a partner. Don't think I could ever go back to sharing a space with another... true story! :)
