Is There an Ultimate Slipjoint Storage Solution

I mostly use a H. Gerstner & Sons oak machinist's chest (52), but also have an old Union chest and another Gerstner from the 40's

Hello!

When it comes to pure storage (and not displaying, having ready for EDC purposes etc), I have all mine vertically stored in simple wooden boxes, each and every one wrapped in soft paper towels that were soaked in camelia oil. Works for me.

Best regards,
Alex

Here is the cabinet I finished recently. I made it from an old door and other scraps from dumpster diving missions on several job sites. Not too bad for $20 out of pocket for the paint and lock.

Apparently there is an ultimate solution and I think you have just created it. Most impressive!

You know we get around to display about once a year or even two....I think I even wrote a thread on this in the distant past.

I say there are two areas here, display and security. I say the display is divided into two areas, man area or fancy part of house area..
Pull out drawers are nice because you can quickly see what you got. For fancy area, you have to get the committee to go along with you. I have always favored the glass top coffee or end table here......In man area I have a small wood box on wall with five shelves in it, I put some stuff on it. Most of the other stuff is in the security area. A small gun safe with craftsman drawer units stacked inside. They store stuff nicely but even with drawers being marked on outside you still have to open the safe and look thru drawers. If you have kids you have to assume that the neighbors know you have knives and know where you keep them. Try to never talk about how many you have or how much they are worth in front of anyone, this includes family. Especially spouses...ha.......

One thing I will state is that if you can keep from letting a display be seen thru a open window I would do that.

My EDC's lay on a old computer mouse pad (Buck) on my dresser......300

My personal favorites are the old blueprint filers, and geology sample cabinets. I am trying to keep a close eye on my local university surplus equipment sales, I am aiming for one of those geology cabinets.

Just received my Harbor Freight chest today. Not a bad storage solution for the money.

Not near as many as the most of you :p

My coffee table with special drawer and glass top:

My display cabinet:

A little space in memoriam of my Dad and Granddad with their old knives.

Sorry for the bad pics and the non traditionals :o

I agree, the HF is a good value considering the organized storage space you gain.

I was disappointed in the draw bottoms, however; mine started to sag under the weight of my awesome knives with the first hint of humidity.

I have since relegated the HF to tube/box and sundry (lightweight) supply storage, and added a Gerstner International box that is much more solidly built (at a much more, er, solid price, of course).

Even the four smaller drawers sagged? That's really disappointing to hear. I am considering getting one of these. Now I'm not so sure I want one.

On display at the Blade Show. This person hand made this one, mainly for straight knives, but it is like a large tool chest you buy from several places, but it not only has wheels, but plexi tops that lock down over drawers. Made to take knives to a show for display it ought to hold most folks stash.....Hauling around is an issue, stairs could require multiple friends, hamburgers and libations... I could not fill up even three drawers that size...maybe one and a half, spread out.

You know some people who are hard core have to have boxes if knives bought new. So extra room to store boxes and sheaths somewhere should be considered if you are one of those people.300

The six small drawers have held their form. I want(ed) to keep similar patterns and/or company offerings together in the larger drawers instead of dividing them among the smaller ones, so opted for a higher-priced alternative once I saw how the HF's large drawer bottoms were sagging.

Someone more skilled than I might be able to come up with a way to provide support underneath the large drawers, or perhaps even replace them with something stiffer; I decided to invest the potential cost (including time fumbling) into the faux Gerstner. ;)

Holy moly... that giant tool chest looking thing is quite the knife storage solution!
I try to have all mine displayed somewhere in my home, which I like the feeling it adds to my environment, and love to be able to see them when I want to without handling them.
