It followed me home (Part 2)

Slow day at the flea market this morning, just one little axe.

That's an interesting little axe you've got! The Norlund stamp is not overly prestigious but the Maine wedge shape of the head is quite intriguing. Makes me wonder who actually made this axe.

I believe so, I do not know a lot about Norland other than folks seem to pay a lot of money for them. I'm just going to clean it up a little, put a new wedge in it and see if I can trade it for a knife.

Are you saying you think it is a fake?

nice one, even if i am not fond of double bits!
on the opposite, for me it should have been a rich day: seen a catalonian stake making axe, one pretty heavy u.s house hatchet on a 20 inches haft, and swedish or u.s 20 inches little hatchet. on another stand on that flea market a german hachet on laughable homemade haft chewed by overstrikes.
but too much axes home, not enough time and money!

A fake, heck no! Norlund marketed inexpensive recreational use axes. They lowest bidder-contracted the making of these out. The current astronomical prices being achieved by Hudson Bay pattern Norlunds is entirely beyond belief.

OK, I got it. As stated previously I know nothing about Norlund, I did not know they were just a name that farmed out work. I thought they actually made products not just marketed them. Thank your for information, I just love learning new stuff. :)

Makes me wonder who actually made this axe.

I just got done fixing it up, the steel seemed very soft, I used an old file and it cut very easily. Then the emory cloth and the buffing wheel process to remove the file marks went much faster than any Plumb or True Temper axes I have experience with. I would not want to use it as I believe the steel to be too soft. It also has some uneven grind marks

Norlund hatchets, wrapped in cardboard and plastic, in the 60s and 70s used to be hung at front counter cashier displays at Mom and Pop hardware stores and Bait & Tackle shops much like beef jerky, Bic lighters and other promotional eye-catching' goodies are today. That Norlund (as a "World Famous" etc type bargain brand) didn't survive the shift over to offshore production says something about them but I really don't know what it is.
Second generation owners of the Norlund operation must have smoked/snorted/drank or peed away all the corporate funds or failed to keep up with the times?

Lots of looking but not much buying. I did manage to dig these up though. A Red Warrior that is a little worn and twin Kelly perfects spray painted black.

In 1987 when I visited the Lewistown, PA. Mann factory they showed me Norland axes that had come off the line with their Collins axes. I have a number of the little Norland DB hatchets and some identical little Collins DB hatchets. In my 1970 & 1977 Collins catalogs Mann called these a "1 LB. CRUISER" They had a 16" handle from the factory and were stamped COLLINS instead of NORLAND. I also have a NORLAND stamped rafter. It is the only one I have ever seen.

Forgot to mention My 1970 & 1977 COLLINS catalogs also show marked SAGER axes stamped with "WARREN AXE AND TOOL CO. WARREN PA. The bottom of the page has COLLINS AXE, LEWISTOWN PA. So, at this time, all these came out of MANN'S Lewistown factory.

Love the perfects, Garry. What are the weights? Seems 3 pounders are quite scarce and sought after.

3 1/2lbs. Now that you mention it I don't recall coming across one that was three pounds. I have a couple more some place around here I will take a little closer look at them.

Sorry, I misspelled NORLUND.
At the bottom right hand corner of any of your own posts are options to edit post, reply or reply with quote. If you click on edit you'll have the ability to do whatever you want except delete the entire post. Sometimes you notice something that's not quite right, the spelling is off, you've something to add or you want to attach a picture and this allows you to go back in. If you do this in the first 1/2 hour or so of initial posting there won't be a notice on the bottom left that indicates time and date of editing. When you're done merely click on save changes.

Thanks 300Six! When it comes to this damn computer thingy I need all the help I can get. I know that it is frustrating to some people that I cannot post pictures and will not learn even though people have told me how. I try to give a verbal discription as best as I can. Besides being old, I have no children or grandchildren to help me. Bottom line for me is, I only use this forum and ebay. I really would rather spend my time working some stick of wood with my old hand tools.

Old Axeman, ten years ago I knew just enough to turn on a computer. Still at times I feel helpless and just above a caveman as far as computers and cell phones. I know just enough to do what I need to on a computer and I still don't use cell phones or send text messages.

What people forget when they would try and help me out on the computer is that I lacked the basic skills so they could not leave out any steps that they would take for granted. Clear precise instructions of every step is what you need and then you would have it down in short order.

garry3- Thanks for the words of encouragement, but in my case I am not sure there is any short order. I just shut it down and head outside or to my shop.
