If it has a 1-3/4# head on a 17" handle, then it was called a "Heavy Hatchet-Axe" in the 1964 Craftsman catalog. The poll is supposedly hardened.

The handle in the photo has the same item number from the catalog (4801) plus the name "Hatchet Axe" and the 1-3/4 pound weight.

Here's a site with some Craftsman catalogs that can be downloaded. The years range from 1931 to 1972. They could give some clues regarding what Craftsman logos were used during which years.

For example, here are the axes from the 1964 Craftsman Hand Tools catalog:

An unusual Craftsman hatchet is item #2, with a hardened poll: "Heavy Hatchet-Axe" with 1-3/4# head, and 4-1/2" cut, on a 17" handle. "Striking head and blade individually hardened."....

Boys axe and splitting maul, $17 for both at an estate sale. Both are in pretty good shape with just a little rust and no serious pitting. No makers marks on the bits though.

True value handle on the maul.

I ran a wire brush over both and they cleaned up nicely.

Here's the top of the boys axe. What are those triangular ridges inside the eye?

Yep that is the one Steve, thank you.
The bit is just over 4" and the head alone probably weighs 2lbs. But we know not to believe printed specs. Just thought that was kind of interesting. Its also the cheapest axe on the page and it has a hardened pole. Its just a little odd.

I thought some might find this stamp a little interesting. Its a boys axe I just cleaned up. The only axes I have ever seen with them small number and letter stamps under the 'Artisan" is on True Temper axes. This one has no ridges in the eye and I do not recall ever seeing Artisan axes that had them.

I hit up the Packwood event this weekend and saw lots of stuff that most of us here would get a kick out of.

The problem was that most of the vendors displays looked a lot like my garage but I didn't want to leave empty handed. Chatted with the guy that put this one together and feel he gave me a good price.

What is that head? I recently picked up an awesome axe with the same exact pattern in a TT Kelly Works Flint Edge. It is stamped 4lbs and the original looking handle is a straight 24-25". Hardened poll too, I was thinking that I had an authentic miner's axe. I kept that one because it was in great shape and I'd never seen one before.

JB, I think it's a 5lb Collins rafting pattern but I could be wrong. It certainly has a lot of poll.

It wants a 32" straight handle and a good profile. There isn't anything wrong with the hang but it is quite a bit thicker that I like. First world problems I figure.

Your Flint Edge there is a good looking tool. I happened upon a 5lb in the same but haven't messed with it yet. It's not in as good of condition though.
