It followed me home (Part 2)

Great brush hook WITH handle! True Temper? I cant get in close enough to see if it had any mark's.

Are either of the two flat cheeks a Millers Falls?

Mikey Likes It!!
The brush hook is a Kelly but the handle has worm holes. The two flat axes, the big one is Craftsman USA, the other says Crucible Steel but not sure of maker.

spent $20 at an estate sale, the two saws, the small rusted one i havent got a name yet, the other is a very nice Disston. next over is a Penncraft axe, apparently J.C penny's answer to craftsmen tools. the axe in the center is a Mann Kentucky with Phantom bevels. it's a shame that the toe is worn down about an inch. can anyone find some info on what line this was? the bevels are hemispherical, not the kelly type bevels. next is the little oil dropper, been looking for one. the head is an no name dayton, looks very nice. the Hatchet is a Bellknap Bluegrass double bevel broad axe, never found one that wasnt meant to be a single bevel. Lastly i got a what's left of an 8" handcrank grinder. the drive shaft is broken off as well as the screw that holds it to the bench so i'll be replacing that hopefully.

somehow i'v never found good daytons until today. i'd say this was worth $20

Nice score.
And yes penncraft was the JCPENNEY house brand for tools.
Not exactly an answer to Craftsman and Sears wasn't the first department store to have their own tools, but definitely the same idea

Guess I had a weak moment. Offset head, single bevel, bent handle, "D" shaped eye, "Goosewing"? head shape. Just what I thought I really "needed".

What ever, it's mine now.;) Here it is as received:

Blade is 8" straight across heel to toe. Weight with handle 2 lb 2 oz. Haven't touched the steel yet so don't have a feel for hardness and obviously don't know how edge will hold. May give edge a "lick and a promise" and test before jointing and reprofiling.

Bob

Just to add comparison to single bevel broad hatchet I am more used to. V&B Super Steel at 2 lb 10.5 oz total:

note: because of picture angle the V&B appears smaller that actual size.

Rjdankert those are beautiful! I don't have a broad axe yet of any sort but they're on my list. It's a big list. A really really big list... i Did however find this Snow and Neally bark spud for 15 bucks about an hour ago. I just used 2000 grit wet sandpaper in the sink and it shined right up in no time! Anyone know what a "normal" length handle is for a bark spud? I was thinking 14"

Very nice looking axe Bob! I’ll have to hang mine and we can compare notes

This style was typically attached to a long handle. My Warren measures 55" overall with handle attached.

This other style was typically put on a short handle.

Thank you for that info. I was picturing myself standing next to and debarking a log that is sitting crosswise up on another couple logs. I guess a handle somewhere between 24"-30" would be easier. Anyhow thanks again! I'm obviously new here and i appreciate the feedback.

You guys have me pumped up about the idea of owning an axe!

Just finished reading the whole thread and I have to admit I still don't know jack about axes. All your knowledge and wisdom makes my head swim.

Any suggestions as to where I should start? I know that I would like something larger than a hatchet but I don't need anything huge.

It all depends on how you plan to use it. A Council Tool boy's axe is a great all around quality tool for a very reasonable price.
