It followed me home (Part 2)

Picked up a few things at a yard sale today.

Artisan boys axe on original 26-5/8" handle, Marshalltown finish trowel, Fatmax tape and a Crescent 16" spud wrench.

The shape of finish of the Artisan remind me of a single oval Craftsman axe I own. I suspect Gambles and Sears had these made by the same manufacturer.

Gotta say all 4 bring a smile to my face, the Crescent Spud wrench is pretty wicked though

Never seen spud wrench in real life.... I love this forum :) What is it about Boy's axes? I did not have to read description and was sure it is Boy's size axe. Congrats !!
edit
On second thought, my brain probably registered size of trowel handle and thickness of the axe.

nothing here had a name on it, the files were NOS that i opened, the drilling hammer and hatchet have no marks and the chisel is a 3/4" new haven edge tool co that i'v been sharpening with the grinder, tha
t thing hogs off a good bit of material! the orang handle is the one with the crosswedge, no axes but i think i did pretty good.

Here's that legitimus machete all sharpened and cleaned up. Also the sheath it came with I'm a little curious about and thought I'd ask if anyone knows anything about it? The fella i bought it from said the ww2 vet that owned the machete made it while deployed? Don't know if i believe him or not...
First pic is of a different machete with a similar sheath for comparison.

this is mine with the sheath.

Anyone know the average(or proper) hardness for a machete? The steel is quite hard! Thanks !

Rockaway (apparently a Jersey, thanks phantom!) and a Black Diamond... Rasp? Using it as such anyway until I find a decent drawknife or spokeshave where I don't have to sell my car to buy it. Need to turn a handle for it on my lathe. 6$ combo

Closeups of the Rockaway, it doesn't have a visible stamp, and I'm not sure if this is something that's faded or some old vice marks. Let me know if you see something familiar!

My first (real) Nicholson file. It worked great for sharpening my hatchets, but it's not doing so hot on my Jersey or Rockaway, I need to find a 10-12" or bigger somewhere. $1.50

My Jersey? Not clear on the differences just yet. This is the good side. $3

Aaand the bad. Looks much better after the vinegar bath, might get those pictures up tomorrow.

lotta people make this mistake for some reason, that's a jersey with round ears, sorry to bust your bubble bud. both nice heads though. cool rasp too, we have a rockaway thread if you'd like to see the differences between the heads

I had just looked up a picture of the differences between heads, and I saw that jersey had the triangle lugs and rockaway had them rounded. I kinda see the difference now though, with the bit more rounded as well. Thanks! Looks like I've got a pair of Jersey boys!

What a shame. I see some worm holes ... are you gonna cut it and burn it? I heard antique furniture with that kind of damage is treated with some chemicals but I know nothing about the exact process.

Yeah a few in the E&S. Normally I would, but this one is otherwise so good that I am going to leave it for any potential buyer to decide. I look at it as a complete collectable as it sits rather than a user, although it could be turned into one.

I've also read that the wood can be frozen to kill anything in there. For example, a piece of furniture can be put into a walk-in freezer for a couple weeks.

It's a Legitimus scabbard but it's older than that machete. The embellishment on the scabbard (top and bottom) were done to hide the wear on the underlying leather.

These were typically made from a plain high carbon steel like 1095. As for hardness they are typically left filable - so RC 60 or lower. I usually find then to be mid--50s.

Only Legitimus machete I have seen the guy wants a hundred for, been there for years and he won’t budge. How did them old boys keep the handles so nice while beating the hell out of the heads?

Thank you for passing that along. I thought that was the case as the construction under the frills looked very similar to the stock sheaths. Man, i got a good deal! My guess was 55 hrc. So that's good to know too. I got two more axes today but just wore myself out doing chores! I'll post em up tomorrow. Thanks again!
