Yes, it's a masting axe or ship axe. Is it cracked? It's not badly worn and definitely worth fixing.

if there's a tooth it's usable. might wanna file the gutters though, dremels and die grinders work well for that i'v been told. nice 4 cutter, they're pretty difficult to find compared to two tooth saws in single man saws
Its not cracked but it does look that way in the photo. Interesting how it was constructed by folding the steel backwards around the eye instead if the opposite way. I was being gentle when i cleaned it because i was hoping to find a mark or two. No go. Thinking i might give electrolysis a try with this one.Yes, it's a masting axe or ship axe. Is it cracked? Did the same thing with a guitar, the damn parts are expensive as youknowwhatNothing worth posting a picture of, but I picked up a piece of crap powder blue garden shovel.
I'm sure you know the ones, they've got small heads, almost full length handles, and the heads are unmarked and dead soft.
It was sticking out of a neighbor's trash can so I grabbed it real quick.
The end was all bent up, but being so soft it straightened out in no time with a stump and ball peen hammer.
It's junk but it was free, so I'll abuse it as long as it'll hold then send it back to the hell it came from![]()
I'm pretty sure my grandfather did the same thing.Did the same thing with a guitar, the damn parts are expensive as youknowwhat
Bah, that head is good even if the handle is trash.

And a Plumb hatchet with original handle. Pre permabond with tensioning screw. ?? All new to me. I'll clean up the hatchet and give to my GF to put in with her camping gear.

DEG was a trademark of the cutlery manufacturer Jean Déglon of Thiers, France, which dates back to the 1921, and the company Déglon is still around, making knives.
This old catalog cover shows the DEG trademark:
